At Menstrie Primary School, homework is an area we wish to encourage in a positive way as we believe that your interest, encouragement and sharing of time with your child is of the greatest value in their overall development.
Purpose of homework
- Encourage curiosity in learning, self-discipline and individual responsibility for learner’s own development.
- Informs families of what their child is doing in class and an opportunity to support learning.
- Encourages children to explore sources of information outside of school.
Pupil responsibilities
- Take responsibility for returning or submitting work.
- Make time to do assignments carefully and well.
- Plan ahead and NOT leave assignments until the last minute.
- Ask for help early when stuck, frustrated or having difficulties meeting due dates. Ask a teacher in school or a family member.
- Let teachers/families know if they need any resources.
- Contact the class teacher with any online login issues.
Family responsibilities
Families can have a positive effect on homework completion and help children to develop effective learning habits.
- Provide a suitable environment and time for learning at home.
- Show interest in what is being done through talking with the learner, asking about what and how they are learning.
- Listen to learner worries and complaints and be patient.
- Inform the school if there are any difficulties or if homework is causing stress at home.
We recognise that homework can cause tension in households and we would never want this to be the case. Homework is optional. We understand that families are busy and there may be times when you are unable to complete homework. If you are finding homework is causing any tension then please speak with us to see how we can best support you and your child.
Look out for the homework guide for your child’s class (normally issued in term 1) or contact the class teacher for the expectations for homework.
