What are P6M learning?

Solid, liquid and gas

Today we were learning about the different states of matter.

We learnt that the particles in a solid all packed tightly together like this:

Particles in a solid

That is why solids keep their shape, don’t move and keep the same amount (volume).

The particles in liquid are a bit more spread out and can move around so liquids can change shape but not volume:

The particles in gas are even more spread out and move around so they can change shape and volume:

We also started to learn a song to help us remember the different states of matter, can you practice it at home?

Here are the lyrics:

States of Matter Song

Solid, Liquid, Gas!
Those are the 3 states!
Of matter everywhere, mmm hmmm.
There’s matter everywhere, mmm hmmm.
A solid keeps its shape.
It doesn’t separate.
Some are hard and some can break, mmm hmmm.
Like a book or roll of tape, mmm hmmm.
When you MELT a solid…
It can form a liquid…
A liquid that moves smoothly…
And takes the shape of a con-tainer that it’s in.
Liquid EVAPORATES to gas, gas, gas, gas, gas.
Like the air that we breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe.
Its shape it does not keep, keep, keep, keep, keep.
You cannot see, cannot see.
A solid keeps its shape, shape, shape, shape.
A liquids shape can change, change, change, change, change.
A gas takes up more space, space, space, space, space.
And those are the, 3 states of matter.
