Katie Morag, the musical.

Primary 1 put on a super production of ‘Katie Morag, the Musical’ on Friday, with 2 morning performances for the pupils and an afternoon performance for parents and carers. They did a great job with lots of enthusiastic singing and flag-waving! Well done to all the staff and pupils involved and many thanks to all those who came along to support this event.

Bike Roadshow

Primary 4, 5 and 6  were treated to a Bike Roadshow on Friday, thanks to the success of P5 in a recent competition. A variety of bikes of all shapes and sizes were provided, from a teeny tiny clown bike to a huge Harley Davidson-style bike. The children had a great time, and were presented with lots of goodies at the end of their session. Click over to the Primary 5 blog for more photos and video clips of P5/5 having fun. 😀

Saxophone Ensemble visits Markethill

On Wednesday morning we were treated to a visit from a group of amazing musicians – The Scottish Saxophone Ensemble. They told us all about their instruments and played a variety of music from Ravel’s Bolero to Handel to Gershwin. The children ( and staff!) were completely enthralled by their performance! As is often the case, our visitors commented on the excellent behaviour of the children, they were a truly fabulous audience. 🙂

Parent Council News

Next session we hope to be able to update parents and carers on the work of the Parent Council by posting here on the blog. The Parent Council play an important role at Markethill and their involvement is valued by both staff and pupils alike. As well as organising and running fundraising events, they take part in many activities which support the school. At the end of term they will be helping to re-band reading books in readiness for the introduction of a new literacy scheme next session. They also sent along representatives to the Primary 1 induction earlier this month and were VIP guests at the Garden Party, where they helped to judge the hat competition.   Here is just a sample of things that have been provided this session alone, through fundraising events such as ‘bags to school’ and the discos:

  • Funding of the BP centre for PE sessions
  • New speakers for each classroom
  • DVD player
  • Coloured card and stampers for reward cards
  • Audio books and cassette player
  • Christmas parties for every class
  • A donation towards the annual Scottish Opera performance for Primary 6
  • Netball bibs
  • Trophies and medals for Sports Day and the Netball tournament
  • Refreshments for the Jubilee Garden Party

They are currently looking at organising a coffee morning and a family quiz/bingo night. The next AGM is on September 10th at 6pm in school. Please come along and support your Parent Council.

Last blog week!

This will be the last week that the current Primary 7 pupils write on the blog. They have worked hard this year to keep you up to date with all that’s happening at Markethill. I wish them well at the Academy and hope that they will occasionally find time to check the blog and leave us a comment!

Thank you for all your help!
