P2M maths games

We have been learning about numbers to 100 and partitioning for our number work. Today we played some maths games to practise our skills in this area. We practised number recognition and order and how to partition numbers into tens and units.

Buddy Reading with P1A

P6R were delighted to be paired with pupils in P1A for Buddy Reading sessions.  During these sessions the P6’s will read to their buddies, thinking carefully about pace and expression.  The P1’s listen carefully and enjoy being able to choose books for their buddies to read to them.   Watch this space to see how this nurturing and supportive relationship develops over the year.

Food and Sustainability in Primary 3S

We have participated in some very exciting activities as part of our ‘Food and Sustainability’ context for learning.

On Friday afternoon we baked oatmeal and raisin cookies with Mrs Shanley.  This was also a perfect activity for maths week and we had lots of discussion about the maths skills we had used!

“We were measuring in grams.”                                                       Jack

“We used teaspoons to put the baking powder in.  We put our finger across it to make sure it was a level teaspoon.”  James.

We had to use scales to weigh the flour, sugar, raisins and oats.  We weighed them in grams.”                                                 Euan

“We used millilitres to measure the milk and oil.”               Sophie Mac

On Monday, Mr Adams came to talk to us about his job as a farmer.  We now have a better understanding of where the oats we used in our cookies came from!

We also understand that farming is a very important job and a lot of hard work goes into growing and producing food before it is put on the supermarket shelves for us to buy!

“We learnt that Mr Adams grows wheat, oats and barley.”    Erin

“We learnt that barley makes beer and whisky.”                        James

In the winter time there is no grass so the cows eat hay.”  Kirstie

“Mr Adams told us he only has sheep and cows but at Christmas time he has turkeys.”                                                   Jack

“Mr Adams has 400 sheep.”                                                          Daniel

“He calls combine harvesters green monsters!”                      Sophie Mack

Today we had a lovely visit to the Ollerhead family’s allotment at Woodend Barn.  We were amazed at the variety of fruit and vegetables James and his family grow there!  What hard work!

We had the opportunity to dig up potatoes, pull out carrots, pick apples and pears and sample some delicious peas fresh from the pod!

We hadn’t realised that Jack’s family also have an allotment so we managed to visit theirs too!  We were very impressed!

“In Jack’s allotment he had a GIANT courgette!”                       James

“Mr Ollerhead showed us the seeds that he plants in his allotment.”                                                                                        Sophie G

“Jack showed us his sweetcorn but it wasn’t ready yet.”     Evie

“He put some fruit and vegetables on the table and we got to handle them.”                                                                                      Olivia

“I took a potato home and I turned it into chips!”            Henry

All of these activities are reliant on parents giving up their time so we would like to say a big thank you!

P3F Visit from a Farmer

Farmer Ian came to talk to our class today. We listened well and learned about harvest time. He also told us about the crops he grows and the animals he has. He explained about the food chain an how we get the food we eat. This has helped us to understand more about food and sustainability.

Some of us realised we had oats and wheat for our snack!

A big thank you from all of us. We really enjoyed your visit and learned

so much to help us understand more about our context for learning.

P7C Maths Week Scotland

This week P7C enjoyed taking part in a range of investigations and problem solving tasks to celebrate Maths Week.

They also took the opportunity on open afternoon to share some learning with their parents. One of of our key messages for the week was

‘Mistakes are Powerful!’ Ask your child to explain this statement more and share some information they learnt on the video we watched.

P3F Baking

We used our maths measuring skills to bake healthy oatmeal and raisin cookies. We used oatmeal because it is grown in Aberdeenshire in Scotland.

P2M Maths Open Afternoon

We had a fantastic afternoon sharing our learning for Maths Week with all our lovely visitors. It was great to meet you all today and we hope you enjoyed your first visit to our class.

Our focus today was 2D shape and we were investigating the features and properties of different ones. Thank you for helping us with our activities!

Every day we have had a whole class Maths Challenge to solve. Today, we had a very tricky one. We had to work out how many rectangles were hidden in the picture. As the larger rectangles overlapped, they created smaller ones inside.

How many did you count?

Answer: 21 rectangles. Well done if you counted accurately. 😀
