Self Smart

Being Self Smart is about knowing yourself. In being Self Smart, we understand how we feel and know what we can do.

We set goals and learn from past experiences and are all always learning more about ourselves as we get older.

Below are some ways to get in some Self Smart time:

Meditate
Meditating is a great way to get in some deep thinking time. We used to take 10 minutes of “Quiet Time” after every lunch break.

Students would do some mindfulness colouring sheets, doodling or lie on the floor. We all need ten minutes of peace at times, especially if you’re a teacher!

Know Yourself
We made these shoes in term one to let people know about what makes us who we are. Students wrote their favourite people, school subjects, sports, bands and singers, TV shows and films and more onto the shoes.

Set Goals
It is soon to be New year, which means New Year’s resolutions. The students and I will spend some time after the Christmas holidays working our Self Smarts by making goals for 2024!

How to develop Self Smarts

  • keep a journal
  • use your imagination (think about a future job or things you want to achieve)
  • make lists of things you like and don’t like
  • set goals, like learning to play an instrument or getting a new belt in karate
  • think about (or write about your dreams)
  • take care of yourself through healthy eating/exercise/hygiene
  • think about/reflect on your day
  • think about how to be a better person
  • daydream
  • find/make a quiet place where you can go to calm down or think about stuff
  • write your autobiography
  • meditate
  • Think about the following questions:
How do I feel right now?
How do I express my feelings?
    What do I believe in?
What do I really care about?
    Who’s really important to me?
Are there things I want to change in the world, my neighbourhood, my life?
