Number/Logic Smart

Lots of people think of this one as being maths, but Number/Logic Smart also takes into account problem-solving, puzzles, coding and working with technology.

Ever tapped a touchscreen? Counted something? Got frustrated at a Rubix Cube? Then you were using your number smarts! Below are some examples from class:

Practising Times Tables
Here we’re using our Music Smarts to do our times tables…

Chess
Chess is a brilliant game for building Logic Smarts. Several of the children can play, and those who can have helped teach others (so we fit some People Smarts in there too!)

Coding on Scratch
We use Scratch code, and will enter GamesCon again this year – a competition where the students have to code their own game. Here are some Scratch action shots:

A Game We Coded (or tried to!)
Harry brought the code for The Floor is Lava in from one of his magazines. In small groups, we had a go at coding the game. It was a bit difficult for our beginner level, but we eventually got one working. Try playing by clicking the image below.

How to develop Number/Logic Smarts

  • chess/draughts/dominoes
  • watch maths and science YouTube channels (Bill Nye the science guy!)
  • maths brain teasers
  • coding with robots, BBC microbits or on Scratch
  • Singing your times tables to the Macarena!
  • maths while using dice/skipping rope/jumping/etc
  • cooking (halving/doubling recipes adds extra number work)
  • cutting up Play-Doh food creations into fractions (pizza anyone?)
  • read mysteries
  • count stuff
  • try some code-breaking puzzles
  • spend and count money
  • collect sports scores or stats
  • estimate – (for example: how much time do you spend in a car each day/week/year?)
  • study globes, maps, stars and planets
  • do brainteasers/riddles
  • play with a calculator
  • budget your pocket money
  • start a business! (an entrepreneurial enterprise!)
  • time read different clocks (Roman numeral, 12hr, 24hr clocks)
