Our learning this week…

This week we have been learning about money in maths. We were multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting amounts of money. We had to remember to set out carefully in columns with the decimal point in the correct place. We also have to remember to put the £ sign or p for pence.

We have also been looking at negative numbers, linked to the weather. Watch a video here and take the quiz to test yourself.

In Literacy we have been working on our poems for next week. We have also learned a Burns poem, which we will perform together at our Burns event. We heard some Scottish myths and legends and created fact files about the creatures found in them. Alongside this we created artwork of our chosen creature. These included Kelpies,Selkies, Nessie, Wulver and Redcaps.

In PE we have been practising the Virginia Reel. We taught it to the P1-4 pupils. It was fun dancing with them.

We did an experiment to look into the properties of materials. We wrapped mini snowmen in different things and watched to see which one melted first. We found out that some materials acted as an insulator which slowed down the melting process. We also looked at snow under a microscope.

We talked about patterns and loops in coding and looked at Isle of Tune. We made some fun  music using this.

On Friday afternoon we made bird feeders and hung them in the playground. We think the birds will enjoy their feast this weekend!

Eilidh’s Achievements

On January 7th  I went to Bathgate for a cross country race. It was quite sunny when I got there but I was worried that it would be very wet.

The race was exactly 1 mile and my time was  6:42.

Me and a girl from Edinburgh  were at the front and it ended up being a sprint finish and I won. I was really happy and my legs were very sore for a while.

P5-7 Learning

This week we have been working on Place Value in Maths.

This game helped us to practise placing numbers on a number line. There are lots of different levels.

And this activity can be used to practise ordering numbers, again lots of different levels to choose from.

We also looked at writing numbers in words and digits. If you want to watch a video explanation, open the pdf below and scan the QR code on the first page. There are some questions to try too if you wish.

In Literacy, we looked at Scots and Doric poems in preparation for our Burns Celebration on the 25th January.

Click here to listen to some poems being read by the folk from Scots Hoose and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

In French we were revising words for different items of clothing. Next we will be practising saying… I am wearing…. he is wearing…

Electrical Circuits

This week P5-7  have been finishing off a topic we started last term. We have been learning about electricity- making and drawing circuit diagrams, finding out about conductors and insulators and then using what we’ve learned to solve a design problem. We made burglar alarms, with hidden triggers which set off a buzzer or lit a bulb when pressed. We also created  light-up pictures using conductive copper tape.

The House Boards

On friday, we decided to redesign the house boards we made for the houses. I am in the mountain hares. The other people in the mountian hares are, Alexis, Lucas, Ella, Anna, Sophie, Ernest and me! For the board, I made an acrostic poem, I cut out some things and I learnt more about printing.  I could use this skill by helping to print out things and making poems.
