Fundraising Coffee Morning at Kennethmont

On Wednesday 30th January pupils from Kennethmont Primary School held a fundraising coffee morning in aid of Mary’s Meals.

The coffee afternoon had a Scottish theme and visitors were served coffee and shortbread and enjoyed a range of entertainment by the entertainment group.  This included Highland dancing, Scottish music and recitations of Scottish poems.

They successfully planned and organised the event through a joint initiative between the Health & Eco Group and the Pupil Council.

A total of £70 was raised at this event and 15 filled back packs were also collected on the afternoon.

The Coffee Afternoon was very well attended by all members of the community.

The Pupil Groups plan to make this a regular monthly event with different themes and any monies raised will go to different charities.

STEM – Scottish Engineering Leaders Award – Kennethmont

Two pupils from Kennethmont Primary School were shortlisted to as finalists in the STEM Scottish Engineering Leaders Award.

As part of the competition  all pupils in the school were involved in researching science, technology, maths  and engineering initiatives  in Scotland; interviewing volunteer engineers who attended the school; and  4 lucky pupils enjoyed a day out to BP in Dyce where they were involved in interviewing a range of  engineers and video conferencing with engineers on an oil platform.   This day out was a great experience for the pupils and they were inspired by a range of engineers and also inspired the engineers. The interview questions the pupils came up with were thought provoking and interesting.

From their research and interviews pupils then had to either write or draw about what they would invent if they were a young engineer in Scotland today.   The designs and inventions were many and varied and certainly set us thinking.  Pupils enjoyed the work for the competition and were excited about their entries.

To our great delight two of our pupils were shortlisted for a special mention and another pupil’s design was used in the invitations to the prizewinning event.  The shortlisted entries were put on display at the Barony in Glasgow and pupils and parents received a special certificate and invitation to the event.

Good questions from the kids today

One further piece for the kids on who inspired me when I was there age – I guess there were two people Kenny Dalglish (great footballer) whom I named, but the other key person who had a strong influence and really generated my enthusiasm for science, was Neil Armstrong. I remember to this day sitting in the school canteen and they brought in the black and white TV and let us watch Neil Armstrong taking his first steps on the moon.  Having watched the rocket launch and followed this on TV, to see someone stand on the moon was truly awe inspiring.  I then bought all the material I could get my hands on (what my parents could afford) on space exploration!  Had I not become and engineering/scientist, being an astronaut would have been my dream job.

Please pass this along to the kids and thank them again for a thought provoking session.

Cheers

Well done to the pupils involved 🙂

Great work from the Kemnay Cluster

The Energy Apprentice

Four S5 pupils participated in this competition run by SPE & ICOTA which asked them to come up with an innovative idea of how more of the oil & gas in the current reservoirs could be extracted. The team spent time researching the oil & gas sector and before presenting their unique idea to a panel of industry experts (as well as the other school teams and teachers) who then judged the competition. The boys came a very close second.

Go4Set

The launch for Go4Set has taken place with Balfour Beatty sponsoring a team of S2 pupils with a possible second team participating depending on sponsorship. The focus is Energy Use and links with work being carried out for the Eco Schools award in addition to work in Science. There are two S6 Advanced Higher pupils mentoring the teams who have 10 weeks to research energy management and conservation, visit a partner company to find out what they do, do an energy audit and report with recommendations. The presentation of projects is on 4 Feb 2013.

Enterprise is the Business

This years P7 “Enterprise is the Business” event took place on Wed, 21 Nov, at Kintore Primary and involved ten S3 pupils helping to run the bank and the shop for the event along with five local business people who are the ‘buyers’ of the pupils products. This event gave pupils the chance to work as a team (mixed from the four schools) to start up and run their own business for a day. The sales person from the team had to then try to sell the groups products to the buyer for the most profit. Prizes were awarded for the most profit and for the highest quality products.

STEM Business Breakfast at Old Rayne

On Friday 2nd November Old Rayne School held a science, technologies, engineering and maths business breakfast.

Both classes P1-3 and P4-7 are currently studying STEM projects and we set up the breakfast as a whole school enterprise, the upper stages class even worked with senior pupils from Meldrum Academy to help plan and set up learning stations for the event (the senior pupils then attended the breakfast with the depute from the academy.) We ran the business breakfast as an open morning with 15 expert stations set up around the school. Pupils, parents and staff circulated around the areas as the experts shared their specific expertise with us. It was also an opportunity for the pupils to display their work and show it to their parents and the invited experts. We had representation from to name just a few…

Aberdeen Uni         RGU          SSE – Peterhead Power Station            Aberdeen Branch of the Civil Engineers

Chevron        Sub Sea 7        OPITO

… and many many Dad’s of pupils who left their companies for the morning to attend as an engineering expert.

It was a super event and the pupils got so much out of it from start to finish. We have invited a few experts back in to school to share more with us about their jobs as the pupils found them very interesting and want to find out more. We perhaps inspired a few more engineers of the future!

The Inverurie Herald and Inverurie Advertiser attended to take photos and do a wee write up that was in last week’s papers.

Government recognition of work by Kemnay Academy Student Glow Committee

Last session Kemnay Academy reached a milestone with GLOW. The Academy team submitted and wrote the first ever Kemnay Academy GLOW report for what the Academy use GLOW for in the day to day running as well as the attainment of pupils and parents using Glow during the last session. Before the summer break the team met with MSP’s and Aberdeenshire officials to take forward the ideas featured in the report. I am pleased to inform pupils that after many meetings last session the GLOW team got a reply from the cabinet secretary and he called the Academy “A credit to education in Scotland” for writing the report and taking it to his officials. The Academy strives to become one of the top schools using GLOW in Aberdeenshire and in Scotland to help us the Government along with myself are running a survey that will be in registration folders for all pupils and staff to have a say on GLOW. The new GLOW has been unveiled and the team in the coming months will keep you updated with developments. I will be inviting pupils and staff to view the new GLOW in December 2012

Surveys go out in November. This information will go to create a second Academy GLOW report and will be available for all to view.

Children in Need Choir: Mearns Academy

Children In Need was a great success and we’re so honoured to have taken part in such an amazing event. Not everyone can say that they got on telly and hugged Pudsey all in the same day! Working as a team with the other schools and Andrew the conductor created a great atmosphere for creativity and we felt well after by the organisers. The song choices were inspiring and were perfect anthems for the message of Children In Need. We’re so glad that so much money was raised and that Mearns Academy could be a part of it.

Mill O’Forest 4th Green Flag Award

Mill O’ Forest Primary School is delighted to announce that it has received a fourth Green Flag from Eco Schools Scotland in conjunction with Keep Scotland Beautiful. The continuation of our Green Flag status was awarded after the whole school studied Biodiversity, School Grounds and Litter for the last two years. The award recognises the school’s achievement towards a sustainable lifestyle and the commitment we make to ensuring that environmental awareness and action are an intrinsic part of our school life and ethos. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the pupils, parents and members of the community who helped us on the journey to attaining our fourth Green Flag.

Gordon Primary P3’s World Biggest Coffee Morning

Gordon Primary P3 pupils took part in the World’sBiggest Coffee Morning held on Friday September 28th 2012.

P3 had to design posters, write letters to local business asking for donations (thanks to Rizza’s and Smith’s the bakers), invites to parents and family, make bunting and of course; serve tea/coffee, serve fine pieces, clear tables and wash and dry dishes on the day.  We also had a gift aid sign up table to help raise more money for the charity.

The queue was huge! It went outside our mobile classroom and it lasted about 40 minutes! (all those parents and grandparents waiting patiently for a drink and fine piece). It was a busy, busy morning!

We had children serving tea and coffee,

We raised £305.00 on the day and with gift aid our final total was £539.26.

Well done to all involved 🙂

Bringing Uganda back to Newmachar

Miss Fiona McDonald spent 5 weeks of her summer holidays in Uganda.

This was part of the Link Community Development Global Teachers Programme.

One of the first things Fiona wanted to do this term was to share her experiences with her school. This was done at a whole school assembly, which gave the pupils at New Machar School a chance to learn about their international peers and what life is like beyond their Scottish roots.

Global Citizenship will be a major focus for New Machar and will fit in with their

Rights Respecting School plan, which hi-lights the Unicef rights of the child.
