Nurture at Southesk

Nurture in school is all about taking learning at the pace of the child, allowing them to embed skills and understanding in a safe and secure environment.

The Lighthouse

This is a Primary 1 Nurture Group run by Mrs Murdie and Mrs Kenny each afternoon in our Lighthouse Room.

The Lighthouse is a room within the main building of the school. It was funded by Angus Council following extensive research in to the benefits of supporting children who can find Primary 1 overwhelming and difficult for a variety of reasons.

The Lighthouse provides a safe, secure and welcoming environment for a small group of children identified as needing time within a smaller group setting. Here they work on specific skills to support their early years learning and experiences in Primary 1

The leaflet linked below gives more information about this provision.

Ginger Time

‘Ginger Time’ consists of a small group of children working alongside Mrs Murdie. Sessions will be run on a daily basis in the Lighthouse Room.

Sessions involve the children working through a structured ‘Time to Talk’ programme which reinforces and develops the following communication skills:

  • Listening
  • Increasing understanding and use of concepts and vocabulary
  • Conversational skills – eye contact, turn taking, sharing, asking questions, answering questions
  • Attention and memory
  • Making and keeping friends
  • Awareness of the needs and feelings of others

Lego Therapy Group

Lego Club enables children to learn and use social skills through collaborative, group Lego play.  Lego Club is based on research that shows children were extremely interested in interacting together when through the medium of Lego. Lego Club is used to build upon social skills and interaction between children in a group situation.
