We have Rights’ Ambassadors throughout P4 – P7.

We are part of the group that is helping our school work towards our Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award.

We are all learning about Children’s Rights and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This means we can make sure our rights are respected and that we promote and support the rights of others within our school and wider community.

 

The ABCDE of Rights

A – Rights are for ALL children. (UNIVERSAL)

B – Rights are there at BIRTH. (INHERENT)

C – Rights CANNOT be taken away. (INALIENABLE)

D – Rights DO NOT have to be earned. (UNCONDITIONAL)

E – All rights are EQUALLY important. (INDIVISIBLE)

 

Special Articles

There are four articles in the Convention that are seen as special. They’re known as the “General Principles” and they help to interpret all the other articles.

They are:​

• Non-discrimination (Article 2)​
• Best interest of the child (Article 3)​
• Right to life survival and development (Article 6)​
• Right to be heard (Article 12)

 

Rights Holders/Duty Bearers

Rights Holders – The UNCRC applies to all children, and they are Rights Holders. They have the rights! ​

In general terms, all human beings are rights-holders under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Duty Bearers – Adults such as parents, teachers and local government are Duty Bearers who help children and young people to enjoy their rights.

Duty bearers have the responsibility to respect, protect, promote, and fulfil human rights of rights-holders.

 

Rights of the Month

As a school we have a Rights of the Month which links to our school values of Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included.

So far we have looked at:

• Achieving – Articles 4, 18, 28 and 29
• Nurtured – Articles 4, 5, 18, 20, 21, 25 and 27
• Safe – Articles 11, 19, 22, 32 – 38
