The Hangout is a different kind of classroom, where we focus on our Health and Wellbeing. It is a safe and quiet space where we can talk, learn and play games to help us socially and emotionally. This means we learn more about our thoughts and feelings, strategies to help us manage them and the impact our actions can have on those around us.
We explore areas of Health and Wellbeing related to topics such as friendships and mental health. Mental health is how we think and feel, as well as the health of our thought patterns and behaviours. Sometimes we might need a bit of help to find strategies that make us feel better or we might need to talk about something that bothers us. We might need support, for example, with friendships, turn taking/ social skills, emotional literacy, family upset or grief. The Hangout Team can support a child in different ways, including one-to-one or as part of a small group.
We are also lucky to have a team of Hangout Buddies. Our enthusiastic volunteers come from all walks of life, most having retired and looking to be involved in the local community. Hangout Buddies meet with children of all ages and for a variety of reasons, either individually or as part of a small group. This is on a weekly basis. A Hangout Buddy has a mentoring role in a relaxed context. This could be, for example, supporting our children with social skills or self-esteem through games, activities and crafts. It is an opportunity for our children to have fun, further develop social skills and enjoy a good blether!
You can discuss The Hangout with your child’s class teacher or contact the school for further information.
