Medical Protocols 

From time to time some children need to take prescribed medications/creams in school. These must be brought into school by an adult to the school office, or via an adult in Fun Club if your child attends there. Along with the medication you must complete an Appendix 1 protocol if you would like school staff to administer the medication, and an Appendix 2 if you are happy for your child to administer their own meds. We would recommend always choosing the App 1 option but sometimes eg. administering creams, we understand it may be better for some of our older children to do this themselves. Some children, however, require medications on a long-term basis as prescriptions will continue to be filled. For these medications the following protocols need to be filled in and then returned to the school FAO Mrs Cheape.

Appendix 3 Protocol for routine administration of prescribed medication in school. (this covers things like ADHD meds, insulin injections, prescribed eczema creams etc )

Appendix 4 Protocol for management of possible anaphylactic allergic reaction.

Appendix 5 Protocol for seizure management in school.

Appendix 6 Protocol for management and care and feeding of a child with a gastrostomy tube.

Appendix 7 Protocol for the management of naso-gastric feeding of a child in school.

Appendix 9 The management of asthma in school

Staff receive asthma training annually and we follow the NHS guidance to schools. This means all Nursery, p1, 2 and 3 children have their inhalers held in their class ‘Asthma Box’, which is stored in the classroom cupboard and carried around the school to gym/assembly/playtime. Staff will always be on hand to help administer their medication when required.

We do, however, encourage children from p4 upwards to become more independent about managing their own asthma. This means they should carry their own inhalers around with them in school and have them to hand when required.
