Grandpa’s Great Escape is David Walliams’ 8th or 9th novel (technically his 8th unique novel as Mr Mingin’ is a Scots translation of his second novel Mr Stink) and is one of his best!
Storyline
The novel is set in an English town in the 1980s about Jack and his grandpa. Due to grandpa’s mental health nobody understands him except for Jack (and the shopkeeper Raj) they share many imaginary adventures together but when grandpa starts to think he is still an RAF pilot in 1940s the adventures become real!
Opinions
It is an incredibly sweet story about this special bond Jack and Grandpa have and how in the 1980s how little, people knew about dementia. It is a gripping read with lots of laughs along the way and the amount of difficulties they get themselves into.
Best Bit
The best bit is when Grandpa is put into Twilight Towers which is an evil and sinister old folk’s home but Grandpa thinks it is Colditz Castle (a Prisoner of War camp in World War 2) and so he goes about trying to escape and free all the poor soldiers (other old people) it is an incredibly funny few chapters and we meet some very interesting characters.
