AHS Sports News

Netball – four teams were entered into the Scottish Cup this year, all of whom came top of their groups in the 1st round.  The S1, S2 & S3 teams have now progressed to the quarter finals.

Football – The S1 & S3 boys have played some tough games so far in the Scottish Cup but both teams have managed to progress through to the last 16.  The S1 Boys are also competing in the S1 Angus league and are, so far, unbeaten.

Giant Heptathlon – The S1 team came 2nd in the Angus Giant Heptathlon with the S2 team doing a little better and winning their competition.  The S2 team have now progressed through to the Tayside and Fife Regional Finals in Dunfermline.

Badminton – The AHS S5/6 team won the Senior Angus Tournament with the S3/4 team coming second in their competition.  Georgia Kelly, Scott Fleming and Craig Cargill from the S3/4 team also competed in the Dundee and Angus Regional competition where Scott and Craig qualified for the Scottish Cup U16 Boys Doubles Competition.  The S1/2 team will have their chance to compete on the  13th of March when they will play in the final Angus Tournament match.

Badminton

Congratulations to the Arbroath HS Badminton team who finished second in the opening round of the Angus League. Our team was made up of S1 pupils Kira Brown and Gordon Cairns; Georgia Kelly and Craig Cargill in S2 and four pupils from third year – Jack Bremner, Hope Findlay, Kiera McDonald and Stephen Roberts.

Curling

Our senior boys’ team has qualified for the Scottish Schools’ Curling Championship finals for the third consecutive year. This year the finals will be played at the Murrayfield Ice Rink in Edinburgh on March 17th and 18th. Arbroath HS will be hoping to defend the title they won for the first time ever in 2011.

The final qualifying competition was tense, given that the Arbroath team was short of two regular team members for the final day of matches. However the first-time combination of Rory Dowell, Marc Anderson, Ben Bremner and Craig Cameron held on to Arbroath’s strong early position and the team qualified in second place, behind Webster’s HS but ahead of teams from Forfar Academy, Brechin HS and Monifieth HS. The teams from Webster’s and Forfar will join the boys from Arbroath in the national finals next month, where regular players Robert Fawns and Thomas Halder will rejoin the squad. We wish them all the best for the finals.

Basketball

Our S2 Girls team has made further progress, winning their quarter-final match in the Scottish Cup. With another excellent team performance, the girls defeated Mary Erskine HS, from Edinburgh by a score of 54-23. Hannah Robb was top scorer for Arbroath Hs with 22 points in the game.
