Well done to all pupils who represented Arbroath High School at the Angus Cross Country Championships which were held at a very windy Monikie Country Park. The pupils performed extremely well with the school achieving their best results for the past few years. Individual success started with Adam McIntosh coming 1st in the S1 boys, followed by Georgia Ferrie taking 2nd place and Hannah Robb taking 3rd in the S3 girls. Cara Black came 2nd in the Senior Girls and finally Hamish Sutherland winning 1st place in the Senior Boys race. The school then swept a large number of medals in the team events with the S1 Boys and S3 Girls winning Gold, the S3 Boys & Senior Girls winning Silver and the S2 Girls & Senior Boys winning Bronze. Congratulations to all runners who achieved great points for the school leading to the great success’.

Scottish Cup Netball Finals
Firstly congratulations to the S1, S2 & S3 netball teams who made it through to the Scottish Cup Netball Finals. All 3 teams fought hard throughout the competition and all 3 teams were unbeaten going into the finals. The finals took place last Friday at Ravenscraig Sports Centre, Motherwell. After a very early 6 o clock start to the day the S1 girls were up first against St Peter’s. The girls started steadily however St Peter’s were just too strong and as the game went on extended their lead to win 35-12. Next up were the S2 girls who faced St George’s. The girls started strong and took control of the game early on. St George’s fought well but the Arbroath girls wanted the title too much to let anyone get in their way and became Scottish Cup Champions winning 25-13. The S3 girls then played Notre Dame to defend their title for the 3rd year running. The girls gave a very strong performance and showed their domination from the start of the match. Notre Dame played well but couldn’t match the talent from the Arbroath girls. The girls kept a lead throughout the game winning comfortably 29-18. The S3 girls have made a huge achievement as their team has now been unbeaten for 3 years running and have won the title of Scottish Cup Champions in S1, S2 & S3. Over 120 schools entered the Netball Scottish Cup this year and for 3 Arbroath High teams to make it to the finals is a huge achievement. Congratulations to all girls that have been involved in the squad throughout the year.
Scottish Schools Basketball Championships 2013
ARBROATH HIGH SCHOOL TAKE 12TH SCOTTISH TITLE
Arbroath High School Open Girls team cruised to a 98-38 win over Falkirk High School to take the Scottish Schools Cup Final. The girls showed an excellent display of team basketball by dominating the game from the start. The dynamic duo of Van Wees and Black put an incredible 68 points on the board and with excellent performances from Richards, Mcloughlin, Harrison, Marsden and Moore the game quickly became out of reach for the Falkirk side. Captain Van Wees was unstoppable with a triple double of points, blocks and rebounds. In the semi-final defeat of Park Mains, point guard Richards showed with her season high of 20 points securing the 1 point win for the Arbroath High Team leading her team to the final. Most improved player goes to Courtney Marsden, a future basketball star.
Arbroath High School U14s also took the Cup with a 42-38 win over Dunbar Grammar School. This is the 2nd time the team have become national champions. Captain Callon dominated this game with an incredible 26 points. Solid performances from Bell, Smith, Watson and Feighan helped to secure the win. McFarlane, Burns, Smart and Gauld continue to improve and will be key to this team competing to win the title for the 3rd year running.
Commiserations go to the U15 girls who lost out on the title by 1 point 54-55 to Culloden in the last moments of the game! Incredibly the result and circumstances were similar to last year’s encounter, but, Arbroath were the victors. The quality of play from both sides was of an exceptional standard with Captain Robb scoring 36 points and Van Wees claiming 10. Although losing out on the title, this final was without question filled with drama which gave the crowd a thrilling spectacle of sport.

U15 Football, 20/03/13
Scottish Cup ¼ Final v Bannerman High School (Away)
A.H.S.were unlucky to lose their Scottish Cup ¼ tie in Glasgow by 7-3.The score did not reflect the closeness of the tie, however with captain Harris Carnegie carried off after 10 minutes and Callum Beattie also leaving the field due to injury the team did well to compete as they did.
Having played excellent football throughout the campaign this was a disappointing result, with a Finn Sutherland hat trick, including a stunning individual goal little reward. There were outstanding individual performances in all areas, as there have been throughout the competition. Somewhat idiosyncratic refereeing made the task even more difficult, but the team will regroup for a serious challenge in the U16 competition next year, after such a creditable performance this season.

Arbroath High School v James Gillespie’s School, Edinburgh
Arbroath High School’s Senior Boys Team were in confident mood going in to the National Cup Final but their hopes were dashed right from the outset as their opponents were quickly off their mark and produced a scintillating display of offensive basketball – their outside shooting was outstanding as they hit perimeter shot after shot with one player in particular who was virtually unstoppable as they raced to a huge 30-10 lead after only ten minutes played. Arbroath tried everything to counter this but their opponents continued to convert from the outside and by the end of the first half had stretched their lead to 59-30 with the game out of the reaches of the High School boys.
In the second half they continued to fight valiantly and actually won this period 37-35 but the damage had already been done in the opening two periods of the match.
At the end the Edinburgh team fully deserved their first win at this level of competition and were more than worthy 94-67 victors.
Among the pluses for Arbroath was the display of young guard Daniel Fraser who ended up top scorer with 16 individual points. The big three of captain Nicky Sim, who was injured in the second half and was withdrawn, fell way below the awesome displays he delivered in the earlier rounds. Jeb Spink and Duncan Pattullo were also closely guarded throughout the game and were prevented having their normal dominating influence on the game but they refused to give up and battled on right to the final buzzer. The youngest member of the starters, Kailin Brannigan had a stellar performance and pitched in with 9 personal points to help his team.
Coach John Grant was bitterly disappointed with the defeat but had to admit that on the day the other team definitely deserved to win the game.
“They shot the ball as well as any team I ever seen in all my years of coaching – one of their boys hit 7out of 9 three pointers in the first half – unbelievable percentage shooting at any level. Eight out of twelve of their boys also play for the country’s number one club team – Boroughmuir Blaze and their depth of talent was evident as they maintained their high level of performance throughout the game. However, our team can hold their heads high, as we have beaten some big teams to get here and it is the fifth time we have reached this final – only two other schools in the history of the event have ever done this – I would like to thank all the members of the team for getting us to this stage of the competition – they should be very proud of themselves.

Scottish Cup Netball
Congratulations to the S1, S2 & S3 Netball teams who have all made it through to the Scottish Cup Semi-Finals. All 3 teams faced tough competition in their quarter finals and all had the extra pressure of playing away from home. The S1 girls played extremely well against St Andrews Academy, they took control from the start of the game winning 29-9. The S2 girls faced rivals Peebles High School which was a testing game. The girls went down 8-1 in the 1st quarter but managed to pull it back to level by the 3rd quarter. With a lot of hard work and determination the girls took control in the last quarter winning the game 25-18. The S3 girls also faced their hardest contest yet against Strathaven Academy. Again the girls went down by 2 in the 1st quarter and were still down by half time. The girls gave their all and took a lead of 3 in the 3rd quarter. The game then went goal for goal until the last 5 minutes where our girls pulled away to take the win 45-37.
Scottish Cup Semi Finals
S1 Girls AHS v Portobello High School
The nerves got the better of the S1 girls team leaving them down 14 at half time. However, they came back strong in the 2nd half winning both the 3rd and 4th quarter. Final score 52-40 Portobello. The S1 team should be proud of how far they have come this season.Well done girls!
U14 Girls AHS v North Berwick High School
A strong and deep U14 team look set to take the Scottish Cup after an excellent team performance. Even after captain Ellie Callon was taken out of the game injured the girls stepped up and played excellent basketball. Scorers – T.Smith 8, N.Feighan 8, K.McFarlane 6.
Open Girls AHS v Park Mains High School
AHS’s undefeated team started strong in what was to be a tough game of basketball against last year’s Scottish Champions. The senior team played outstanding with point guard Richards leading the play and hitting points from the floor and also on the drive. At half time AHS were down by 1. Captain Van Wees had a strong first half but got into foul trouble and had to sit down for the 3rd quarter. Young talent Marsden stepped up and was in double figures for rebounds. Special performances also came from McLoughlin, Harrison and Black as all players hustled defensively and made big shots. The winning basket came from Van Wees as she held her nerves on the foul line. An excellent team performance and the girls now look set to take the title!
The girls finals take place on the 21st March at Grangemouth Sports Complex. The U15 girls are still to play their game and if they win 3 out of 4 girls team will play in the Scottish Cup finals aswell as the Open Boys team. This is an outstanding achievement for the pupils and the staff involved.
Athletics
Congratulations to Ellen Robertson who is Scottish U18 Indoor triple Jump Champion which is a great achievement. Ellen competed in the new Emirates Arena in the Scottish Indoor Championships 2 weeks ago. Ellen jumped well and was sitting in bronze position going into her final jump where she produced the winning jump of 10 meters 76 crowning her Scottish Champion.
Also well done to Niamh Feighan & Anna Robertson who were selected for a Scottish Schools Athleticss Coaching Day in Pitreavie Stadium. Nianh was selected for Shot Putt and Anna for Long & Triple Jump.
Scottish Cup Netball
The S3 girls took on Robert Gordons in the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup. The girls started extremely well securing a good lead in the 1st quarter. The girls kept their momentum up securing their place in he quarter finals winning 33-14. Also the S2 girls put on a great performance against Williamwood in their 2nd round tie. They led from the start and dominated throughout the game winning 25-11. Well done to the girls who have now also reached the Scottish Cup quarter finals.
