3D shape – how are they made?

We were learning to not give up with a tricky maths job today.  We worked in teams to create our own 3D shapes with spaghetti and marshmallows!   This required lots of problem solving, many models broke and we had to learn to keep trying.  We were very good at this!

We had to look at the 3D shapes closely to find out how many corners (marshmallows) and how many edges (spaghetti) they had.  We also had to think about the size of each shape.  It was lots of fun and we all were able to persevere to make at least one shape!  Please ask your child more about this.

(Thanks to our budding photographer Aaron for helping me capture the evidence with the camera).

Our brains

We are continuing to learn about our bodies and have been learning about the different organs that we wanted to find out more about.  This week we were learning about our brains. We watched a video  and read non-fiction books to help us find out more.  Click here to try the video at home.

We were amazed at how many important jobs our brain does, even when we are sleeping.  We talked about how we could keep our brains safe and decided we should always wear a helmet when we are on our bikes or scooters.

Meet our new friend, Stanley!

We have been learning about our bodies with Mrs Duncan (Thurs/Fri).  We decided we wanted to find out more about our organs and our skeleton.

We met a new friend, Stanley.  Stanley (the skeleton) helped us learn all about our bones.  We found out what bones are for and learned the names of some important bones – skull, ribs, spine, hip and jaw.  We also found out about our largest and smallest bones.  We were all very engaged and interested and thought it was fascinating that there are so many bones underneath our skin.  Please ask your child more about this.

Here we are with Stanley.

We also did a craft activity to helps us learn more about bones.

A ring of ‘ng’

We were revising the ng sound with Mrs Duncan (Thurs/Frid) this week.  We played a super bingo game to warm up our brains and to help us to develop our early reading skills.  You can play it by clicking here – you will need to print page 6 of the bingo cards before beginning.

We then made a gigantic list of ‘ng’ words as a class and then worked in teams to create ‘rings of ng’.  This required us to problem solve when trying to work out how to stick rings together.  We also had to support our team members and had to try and sound out dozens of ‘ng’ words.  We were delighted when we managed to get some of our ‘ng rings’ to reach the floor!  They were huge.

3D Shape

We will be learning about 3D shape over the coming weeks with Mrs Duncan on a Thursday and Friday.

Yesterday we watched a very catchy video to help us learn about the properties and names of different shapes.  You can watch it at home by clicking here.

We also went on a 3D shape hunt around the school.  We were all developing our skills in correctly identifying cylinders, cubes, cuboids, cones, spheres and pyramids.  We recorded all of the shapes that we found and spoke about which shapes were most/least common in our playground.  We also spoke about the differences between 2D and 3D shapes – please ask your child more about this.
