World Book Day

image

This Thursday the 3rd of March, was World book day. We had a fab time working with our buddies at lots of different literacy based work stations. We wrote, told and listened to stories; we imagined, created and traced characters and we made and used puppets! The day was rounded off with a character parade and assembly where we listened to a whole school story which had been created during the day.

Thank you for all your efforts dressing up the children, sending in wooden spoons, looking out books, taking photos and buying raffle tickets. The kids had a brilliant day (so did the teachers!!).

World Book Day is on Thursday 3rd March. We hope this will be a fun filled day full of interesting activities for the children.

Miss Leslie and Mr Campbell will be covering the class on Friday as Mrs Northcroft is still on a phased return to work.

P1 Handwriting Homework – Handwriting letters for this week are q and b. These will be given as homework on Monday and Wednesday and should be returned to school the next day.

Common Words – This week our words are our and out. P1s, please complete the homework from last week and this week in the white book for Thursday. P1s and P2s, please keep practising the common word walls 1, 2 and 3 in your Home/School Book.

Reading – Primary 1 and 2 children will receive a new reading book on Monday and Wednesday. Some children have a new word list in their Home/School Book which will continually be assessed in school, but please use it to help you practise the new reading words at home.

Phonics – This week our sounds are ee as in bee. The sounds will be put in the sounds envelope at the front of the pink book and can be used to make words along with the other letter sounds.

In class we do lots of word making activities, so ask your child to show off their knowledge to you. Why not try getting them to set out their sounds into alphabetical order and asking them to spell a range of 3 letter words, along with oo words (moon, pool, foot, book), ai words (pain, train, jail, nail) and oa words (toad, goat, moan).

P2 spelling homework will be given on Monday and should be completed for Thursday. These ee words should be practised each night at home, ready for the spelling test on Friday. Please remember to practise the two common words as well as these can often trip the children up.

Number – Primary 1 and 2 will be working on subtraction. Primary 1 will be learning subtraction facts for the numbers to 10 and Primary 2 will continue learning about difference (e.g. Find the difference between 5 and 3).

Our topic for the next few weeks will be ‘Festivals and Special Days’.

World Book Day this year is on Thursday 3rd March 2016. We are celebrating this day in school in various ways.

  • The children should come to school dressed as a character from a book and bring the book with them if possible.
  • Each child should try to bring in a wooden spoon sometime over the next few days so we can make puppets.
  • Extreme reading competition – can you take a photo reading a book in an unusual or unexpected place? There will be a prize for the winner.
  • Signed book raffle – raffle tickets will be on sale to win signed copies of the Scottish Children’s Book Awards books.

Shrove Tuesday

On Tuesday we met with our Book Buddies in P5 to learn about Shrove Tuesday and Lent. We drew pancakes, coloured in pictures, listened to a story and of course, made and ate pancakes!  What a great afternoon we had!

Open Afternoon

A huge thank you to all the adults who attended our open afternoon last Wednesday. We enjoyed having the opportunity to show you around our classroom and play zone so you could see all the things we get up to.
