Outdoor activities

With the weather forecast saying the weather is to continue to be nice today we thought that some more activities you could do outdoors would be nice.

The Wildlife Trust have created a list of 10 activities you may enjoy doing with your child outdoors. There is something for everyone on the list and you don’t have to do them all. To access this list you can use the link below:

Make a bird feeder

Using an old milk bottle, which has been thoroughly washed. draw a circle near the bottom of the bottle. Using scissors cut this circle our, you may need to help your child with this part of the activity using a hand over hand technique. Once you have created the hole you can decorate the bottle using resources you have at home this may include using pens, crayons or sticking down coloured paper/pictures with glue. Once your bottle has been decorated use a piece of string, an old shoe lace or piece of ribbon to tie it up in your outdoor space. Fill the bottom of the carton with seeds, oats or nuts that the birds can eat. The children will enjoy watching the birds feed from their creation!!!

If you have had enough of outdoors or just want to involve your child in some household chores we have shared a game we play in the nursery which the children enjoy.

The game is all about matching and sorting. You can do this with anything you have pairs of in your home but in nursery we like to use socks! Mix the socks up into a pile and ask your child/ren to find the socks that are the same (match). You can spend some time talking about what makes them match/a pair. Are they the same colour? Do they have the same pattern? Have they got the same shapes on them? This can lead to great conversations where you could then spot these things around the house or out on a walk!

And if you want to extend the experience further add in some pegs. Ask your little ones to peg the pair of socks together. Using pegs is a skill that has to be learned and is great for working those fine motor muscles and getting those little hands and fingers ready for holding pencils and pens!
