Term 2 in Primary 1

Learning more about People Who Help Us and keeping safe

So much excitement in class when we had an arrival of ‘Quiet Critters.’

We loved learning the songs when Rookie Rockstars were in school.

Creating our own characters to add to the story of Room on the Broom.

Having a go at spelling words on our own.

Sequencing numbers to 20, counting and writing numbers to 20, adding 2 numbers to beat our partner when playing the game ‘Walk the Plank.’

Remembering how to wash our hands thoroughly so that we don’t spread germs.  Our posters reminding people to wash their hands after going to the toilet are on display around the school.

Learning how to use elastics during outdoor PE.  This was a popular activity when our parents and grandparents were young.

Investigating toys-what are they made of, how do they work, what do you like to play with and why?

Creating Christmas countdown calendars with our P7 buddies.

Curling with Mrs Brockbank.

Learning about the history of teddy bears, we had a teddy bears picnic and listened to lots of stories about teddy bears-this was one of our favourites.

When learning about toys from the past we found out about a variety of puppets.

We even learned how to sew and managed to make amazing puppets of our own. It took lots of concentration but we persevered and are so proud of what we achieved.

Our parents/carers were invited into school during Book Week.  We were all given our Bookbug bags and loved finding out what was inside.

Some of our learning last term in P1

Remember remember the 5th November!  We found out who Guy Fawkes was and what he tried to do.  We shared our experiences and opinions about fireworks.  We also talked about the dangers of fireworks and how to keep ourselves and pets safe.   We created a list of words to describe fireworks-how we feel, what we see, what we hear and had fun making our own fireworks and bonfire night pictures.

We had an unexpected visit from author Tony Bonning and enjoyed listening to his version of Cinderella and Stone Soup.

Maureen, who works for West Lothian museums, brought in a variety of old toys to help us learn more about toys from the past.  We shared our knowledge of toys and could compare the differences with toys we use today.  Some of the toys were quite difficult to operate-we had fun trying to make them work!

As well as continuing to count forwards and backwards, being able to recognise odd and even numbers and adding 2 numbers together we also learned about shapes.  We can name and describe simple properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Here are some of our shape monsters.

We have been using our Jolly Phonics sounds and common words to begin to write simple sentences on our own.

Having fun creating our own toys!

Watching the pantomime in school-getting excited for Christmas!

We had a great time at the Christmas sing-a-long.

Helping the grown ups get into the festive spirit at the Cake and Carols concert.

Christmas arts and crafts

Our fantastic P1 Christmas party.  You all behaved so well and had lots of fun joining in with the dancing and party games.  We had a visit from Santa too.

We hope you’ve had a lovely Christmas and wish you all a healthy and happy 2018.

Toys Past and Present

Our P1 children have been asked to bring in toys from home so that we can compare toys from the past, to toys of the present. Aaron in P1S brought in a very old toy, which all of the Primary 1 children were able to play with. They thoroughly enjoyed it! If you have any old toys that you would like to share with us, please do- the children have had an absolutely smashing time playing and being able to touch, see and smell old toys.
