More Whirry Bangs from Primary 1

Here are some more Whirry Bangs for you to look at. We are enjoying seeing them, and hearing all about how the children have designed them and what materials they have chosen.

News from Primary 1

It’s been another busy week in Primary 1 – here is some of our learning to share with you!

We are almost at the end of our topic on Scotland. We have been hearing all about Hamish McHaggis and we have a challenge to make his car or “Whirry Bang” at home. Mrs McKay and Mrs Sutherland are going to make a Whirry Bang too!

We looked at pictures of Hamish and also used what we could remember from the stories to make a mind map all about him. We know that he and his friends go for great adventures and they always take things to eat with them!

We have learned about different places in Scotland and have learned about postcards. You might get one of these from someone who is on holiday. Mrs Sutherland sent us a postcard from Edinburgh with these cute wee doggies!

Mrs Baird appeared in our class with the bagpipes to listen to. We thought that the bagpipes were noisy but we love having visitors!

We have been learning this week about odd and even numbers. We know an easy way to find out if a number is odd or even and here we are putting animals into groups of two (we know these are called pairs). If there is an odd one out we know we have an odd number and if all the animals have a partner then we have an even number. We listened to a story about two cousins called Odd Todd and Even Steven, then started to make our own posters to remind us of what the odd and even numbers are. We found a book in the cosy corner library about an odd number!

We had our Reward Time at the beginning of the week as we were so busy with our Scots poetry competition last Friday.

Here we are enjoying the different activities we can choose from. We love Mr and Mrs McColl’s Post Office which is outside the classroom. We have been doing lots of independent writing here, organising the deliveries, and taking it in turns to wear the postie’s uniform and carry the mail bag.

Learning about Scotland

The children in Primary 1 have learned lots about Scotland through our Scottish topic.  We have learned a poem called ‘Sair Teeth’ and had a competition in class where each child had the opportunity to recite the poem, Mrs Sutherland and Mrs McKay were very impressed and had great difficulty choosing winners!  We have enjoyed finding out about different places in Scotland using the Hamish McHaggis stories.  We created our own ‘Whirry Bang’ cars in the classrooms and worked well as a group to explain how our Whirry Bangs were made and why we had selected the items used.

Primary 1 – A Busy Start to a New Year

Primary 1 have had a very busy January already and we would like to share some of our learning with you.

We have started off by learning about Scotland. Here are some things we already know, such as what people might eat, some celebrations, story characters and places.

We have been listening to some stories about Katie Morag and watched a programme where the author, Mairi Hedderwick, talked about the Isle of Struay and read the story of Katie Morag and Tiresome Ted. Poor Ted ended up in a very bad way as you will see from the pastel crayon drawings we made of him. Can you see where he had to be patched up and stitched? Katie Morag’s mummy and daddy own the Post Office on the island and we have made our own Post Office outside the classroom with uniforms to wear and a post box for letters and cards that we can write.

We have learned the names of some animals too. Can you guess what these are? Tod, dug, moose, hoolit? We heard some of the names in The Gruffalo in Scots which Logan’s mummy kindly sent in. Mrs Sutherland quite enjoyed reading it but we thought she sounded funny!

We are learning a Scots poem called Sair Teeth which is about another poor teddy. This one has sore teeth. Next Friday we are having a poetry competition in the two Primary 1 classes with some special Scots prizes.

In Literacy we looked at some lovely winter pictures and used them to think of and make our own list of winter words. Here they are.

In our number work, we have been doing lots of practice on our addition work and will be starting to add three numbers together. We have done some revision of counting backwards. We have been learning about doubles of numbers and have made our own number lines using cones and stars. Here are two of us being busy mathematicians!

A lovely, busy, fun start to 2017 – Mrs McKay and Mrs Sutherland are very pleased with us!
