P1 Trip

On Wednesday the children in Primary 1 visited the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.  We took our packed lunches and teddy bears as we were invited to a Teddy Bears picnic by Edward Bear.  We learned about SWAF-this is a special code to help us remember what bears and other living things need to stay alive. We played games, went on a hunt for Edward Bear and found clues about SWAF as we were searching for him.  We got the biggest surprise when we went back for lunch-Edward Bear was waiting for us with our teddies!  After lunch we played another game to show us what happens to the bears when the trees get chopped down.  Our final activity was creating an island for the bears-making sure they had shelter, water, air and food.  There were some very sleepy boys and girls on the journey back to school!

P1M assembly

Cock-a-doodle-doo what a farmyard hullabaloo!  The stage was invaded with a variety of farm animals this morning!  Boys and girls-you were fantastic, Mrs McKay is so proud of each and every one of you.  There was so much to remember-lines to say, stories to read, songs to sing and dances too! I know you are so disappointed that it’s all over-you enjoyed performing to your audience.  Have a relaxing weekend-you all thoroughly deserve it.

Planting and growing in Primary 1,

We have been talking about what plants need to grow and have planted a variety of seeds and broad beans.  We have set up experiments to show that plants need water, light and oxygen to grow best.  We looked at the hard shell around the beans, managed to peel it off to see the food inside but it was so hard we couldn’t make it all the way through to the little plant itself.  However, we are able to watch the transformation using our sprout houses on the windows. It is very exciting.

Snow day fun

As the school is closed today (28th February 2018) here are some learning activities you could try.

* Write an imaginative story about a snowy day.
* Find out what the weather forecast is-is the prediction correct?
* Help an adult clear the snow off the driveway/path.
* Have a look for footprints in the snow, can you identify where have they come from?
* Measure how much snow we have in the morning and again at night to compare snow fall throughout the day.

* Stay cozy indoors-do some baking, read and follow a recipe, measure out the ingredients, have fun sampling what you make!
* Explore the learning games on www.topmarks.co.uk
* Read/share a story-write a book review/rewrite the story/write a recommendation for a friend.
* Create your own reading quiz to share with the class.
* Be creative-draw/paint/make/take photographs of a winter scene.

Have fun in the snow-build a snowman, igloo or even a snow fort.
