Exciting Times in P4!

This has been an amazing week for P4! We have had so much fun that it felt like a short week.

It kicked off with a Vicious Viking visit which we really enjoyed!! We learned so many new things and loved getting to see some of the weapons, jewellery and different animal skins.

We would like to share some of the interesting things we learned with you:

“The cheapest weapon was the club and it caused the most damage even when chainmail was involved!” – Adrin

“The Vikings washed their white clothes in ammonia (which is PEE) to keep them clean!” –  Hannah

“The sword was very rare because of how expensive they were.” – Haseeb

“It took 25,000 crushed sea snails to make enough purple dye to make a dress.” – Ailie

“The woman kept a knife in their pocket in case they were attacked at home.” – Evie

“Some of the jewellery had a cross on it but when you turned it upside down it looked like Thor’s hammer.” – Brooke

After our exciting visit we decided to use what we had learned to make our very own Viking weapons and jewellery. We wrote newspaper articles about our visit and hope to make the into a class newspaper!

In maths, we have been learning about division in the standard form. This proved to be very tricky in the beginning but we are more confident with it now! We have enjoyed using sumdog, board games and written tasks to help us learn.

In preparation for our sacraments, we were learning about different Saints including Saint Vincent De Paul, Saint Margaret and Saint Francis of Assisi.

We have been preparing for our class assembly which is next Friday morning and will be focussing on Lent.

Some of our classmates participated in World Thinking day and enjoyed wearing their Brownie uniforms to school.

Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond, Miss Crookston and P4!

P7/6 News

P7 this week had a trip to St Margaret’s High School as part of their transition programme.  It was a great success.  The children followed a timetable which involved a Social Studies lesson, Science lesson and PE lesson.  Everyone seemed to really enjoy the experience and they were a credit to the school in their manners and behaviour.

In class we have began our new topic of World War 2.  We have looked at the leaders of the countries involved and the causes for the outbreak of the war.  The children have all completed a registration card and understand why it was so important to have identification during the War time period.  Next week we are going to be learning about the Blitz and evacuations.

For our Maths work we have been continuing our work on angles.  P6 went on an angle hunt around the classroom and took photographs of different types of angles.  These will be put in our class talking book.  Next week we are moving onto looking at data handling which we will link to different aspects of WWII.

In class we have been discussing The First Ministers Reading Challenge.  This is an opportunity for the children to record the books they are reading for pleasure.  Everyone was issued with a passport for this challenge last term during Monday Circle time.  Children are welcome to bring their passport into class and they will be given an opportunity to share their reading with a friend.

On Thursday we were all treated to an amazing assembly by Fr Kenneth about his recent trip to Jerusalem.  His photographs that he shared were excellent and his stories of his trip were very interesting.  This fitted in well with our Catholic Education Week Theme of our Faith Community.  In class we discussed how a church is not the building but the people who gather together.  We found a lovely picture to show this and we have put this into our journal.

Have a lovely weekend.

Nursery News

Although a short week we still had a very busy one! We returned after the holiday to discover that the birds had eaten all our bird cakes!! They must have been very hungry. We had used our identification sheets to tick off the different types of birds that we had spotted in our garden. We would like to make some more bird cakes as we are sure the birds are still hungry.

Some children came in on Wednesday and were keen to make some valentines so they made lovely heart shaped flowers and talked about their families and friends that they loved.

The children have taken their learning towards the topic of shops so it was decided that we would have our own shop in the Nursery. Our AM children wanted a toy shop last week and our PM children decided on a food shop this week so we have incorporated both. We have been developing our numeracy skills by counting and recognising real coins.  Some children have been writing their own shopping lists and taking turns at being both the customer and the shopkeeper. We have all been very good at sharing all the resources. We also discussed the different types of shops that we have and what we could buy in these.  We continued this theme at the gluing table by making our own bank cads to use in the shop and also price tickets. If you or your child have any ideas that can be taken forward within this topic we would love you to post them on our visible learning wall. You can also extend this learning at home by discussing with your child about the various different types of shops and what products can be bought in them. Also looking at real coins and helping them to read the numbers on them and look at the shapes. If you are out and about at the shops with your child you can also point out the cashier, tills and scanners. We would welcome any photographs or pictures that you might have or take too.

A little reminder that both sessions will visit the library on Monday.  We seemed to have misplaced a library book called ” The monster in the woods” We would appreciate it if you wouldn’t mind having a little look at home  just in case it has been borrowed by someone. Thank you in advance.

It is the turn of our PM children to share their learning this week.

Kayla” I love playing in the shop.”

Emilie B and Liam” We made a spaceship with the big blocks”

Mark ” I made some good things at the gluing table”

Milena” I like drawing”

Shea” I love to paint pictures”

Lucas” The sand was my favourite”

Jiya” I did lots of jigsaws”

Have a lovely weekend.

We have had a short but busy week in P4 this week!

In writing this week, we were writing news reports all about our 40th celebrations. We had to include title, pictures and quotes from members of our school community.

We have an exciting week ahead next week so stay tuned for our next blog post.

We also started talking about what a ‘community of faith’ should look like, what would be the key ingredients. Next week we will continue our lessons on these themes. We also went to a very special assembly led by Fr Kenneth, he shared photographs and stories from his recent visit to Jerusalem.

Little Blog by Primary 2

Ava creatively thought up the name of our blog this week, well done Ava! 🙂

We have continued to learn about our 2 times table. When completing 2 times table calculations we have noticed that if you add 2 to each answer you will find the next answer.

Ahmad- “The answers go up in twos.”

On Friday we completed our big maths beat that tests. We are trying really hard to get full marks in our learn its and CLIC test so that we can move up a level.

We are enjoying our smart starts; here we are completing our literacy smart start in the morning. Each table had a different activity to complete.

Lennon- My group had to build a sentence with the cards, we had to read the sentence to check that it made sense.”

Julia-“ At my group we worked in pairs or trios, one person asked the other to read one of the tricky words we then covered it and they had to try and spell the tricky word. We peer assessed each other.”

Ryan-“Our group completed tricky word word searches.”

Zoe- “My group played the tricky word popcorn game for smart start.”

This week was Catholic Education week at school, we wrote Community of Faith recipes in writing. Our recipes included the ingredients, equipment and instructions. Also in our recipes we included the people who are part of a community of faith, the qualities of those people and important symbols in the Catholic Faith.

If you check out our twitter page you will be able to read some of the children reading their recipes. @StNiniansPS

To go along with our recipes we drew pictorial representations of what we think is included in a Community of Faith.

On Thursday Father Kenneth came to visit us for a whole school assembly.

Wojciech- “Father Kenneth told us all about his trip to Jerusalem and the journey of Jesus.”

We all prayed together and sang hymns.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend from primary 2 and Miss Boyes!

Nursery News!

This week we continued to make bird cake for our nursery garden, below are the instructions if you would like to try this at home:

1) We mixed together softened Lard and bird seed to create our special mixture.

2) We put the mixture into empty yoghurt pots and recycled netting.

3) The pots and netting were then placed in the freezer overnight to harden.

4) The next day we took our bird cakes outside and hung them from the trees and the fence using string.

5) Finally, we watched and waited to see what birds would visit us.

Check back next week to find out what birds we have spotted 🙂

Finally we would like to wish everyone a very restful and relaxing February break and we look forward to welcoming our children back on Wednesday 15th February.

The Nursery Team 🙂

Have a lovely February Break!

This week in numeracy we have continued to learn about multiplication. We have been learning about communicative pairs and how to multiply by 1 and 0.

img_6627 img_6628

Also to develop our understanding of multiplication we have been looking at arrays and writing multiplication sentences to match the array.

At our station we have been independently matching the communicative pairs and matching arrays to the multiplication sentence.

We have really enjoyed playing this game to support our understanding of arrays.

Here we are using our plenary wheel to reflect on our learning.

Miss Boyes emailed a teacher who works in a Primary school on the Island of Muck. The teacher was happy for us to send a letter to her school and she promised she would send us a letter in reply.

We wrote some super letters telling the children in Muck Primary School all about where we live and our school. We also thought of interesting questions to ask, such as:

Lennon- “How many cars are there on the island?”

Ahmad- “What do you do for fun?”

Leo- “How many children are there at your school?”

Vanessa- “What are your names?”

Ava- “We have class mass this week, do you have a class mass?”

This week we have been talking about feelings and emotions. We learned about Health and Wellbeing through our Katie Morag topic. After listening to the story, “Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted” we reflected on how Katie Morag feels at different parts of the story.

On Tuesday it was Internet Safety day we looked at lots of pictures and we had to decide if they were safe to be online or not safe. Together we spoke about keeping private information off of the internet, such as

Lilly- “Phone number.”

Angelina “password”.

Aaron “House door  number”.

img_6566 img_6569 img_6572

On Wednesday we went through to the main hall to listen to The St. Ninian’s song that the primary 5 to 7’s had been working on.

Leo- “The song included the name of the school so that you know it’s about St. Ninian’s.”

Wojciech- “The words in the song were about ‘learning together’ because that’s what we do at St. Ninian’s.”

Te song is super catchy and we love it.

We had been preparing for our class mass this week by singing our hymns and reading our prayers.

Our class mass was a lovely way to start our day and we were all listening very well to the Gospel and readings.

Have a lovely February break from P2 and Miss Boyes.
