P2 Weekly news!

This week we were learning about saving money. We know that if you want to buy things you have to have money so it’s important that you save some of your money in the bank. At our independent station we had piggy banks and we had to find different ways of making the total amount. Once we had laid out an amount with the coins we took a photo with the iPads.

We played different games on the netbooks to help us with our learning.

The links are below so that we can play our games at home.

In multiplication we have been learning how to find the missing number in the 2 times table sums.

Miss Boyes was impressed with our ability to find the missing number quickly using our counting by 2 skills.

Here are our strategies for the calcualtion   2 X _ =14

Wojciech- “You could do your doubles sums and I know that
7 + 7 = 14 so the answer is 14 because that is 2 sevens.”
Filip- “Count by 2’s with your fingers and then when you reach 14 count how many fingers it took you to get to the total number.”
Primary 2 have been using fantastic strategies and they are very good at explaining their strategy to their peers during number talks.

In literacy this week we had an interesting message from a mouse. There was a special voice message on the phone.

The mouse read out a description of a creature which it saw in the magical forest.  The message was also on paper so that we could read it in our trios.
Marcus-“We had to read the text and highlight all of the adjectives in the text.”
Lennon-“After we highlighted the adjectives we had to use them to draw a picture of the creature.”

Once we drew our pictures we guessed which creature we thought it was. Our pictures looked like a dragon.

We peer assessed our work by checking that our trios had included all of the adjectives.

We loved dressing up for World Book Day. In class we all chose a book to share with our peers. We shared why we enjoyed reading our books. Everyone spoke clearly and listened very well. We asked questions about the books.

In the afternoon we looked at different story book covers and we then designed our own book covers. To successfully design a book cover we had to make sure we included the characters on the cover, the title of the book and make it bright and colourful.

In writing this week we wrote a book review and we had to include connectives. At the beginning of the lesson we completed our Kung Fu punctuation because as part of our criteria we have to make sure we have our punctuation in the correct place. Our book reviews were fantastic and we all explained why we chose our favourite character and why we chose our favourite part in the story.

We have evaluated our Katie Morag topic this week and we will begin our new topic next week which is very exciting!

In Health and Wellbeing we have been discussing different emotions and the importance of respecting others emotions. In our groups at our tables we made our very own calming bottles. We used water, glitter and food colouring. We love having them on our tables.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

Primary 6 Weekly News

What a fantastic week in Primary 6.  We have been learning more about the Victorians and what jobs the children had to do.  We know all about the horrible working conditions and the awful things that happened.  We used our knowledge to write excellent diary entries, pretending we were a Victorian child.
In numeracy we are focusing on timetables, working in 24hour time.  All pupils were enjoying reading the train timetables and were able to make up their own challenging questions.
Yesterday we celebrated World Book Day.  All the costumes were fantastic!
Have a look at our photographs after the comments from pupils.

Emma-This week we did a lot of things: on Tuesday we had some very VERY important visitors inspecting us and on Thursday it was world book day so we dressed up – I was Dorothy!

Declan-On Wednesday it was Ash Wednesday and it was the first day of lent. I gave up fizzy juice.

Aliza- this week was AMAZING!! We had Ash Wednesday and we said our Lenten promises. Mine is to give up chocolate. We also had world book day on Thursday and we all dressed up and done book related things. My character was red riding hood and I had a cute basket FULL of yummy, yummy muffins!! Hope you all have a FANTASTIC week!

Emily- this week has been really busy. We had a service for ash Wednesday where we got our ashes before lent, then on Thursday it was world book day. I was Alice from Alice in wonderland. We also got a visit from the St. Margaret’s Malawi team today.

Kieran- this week we had world book day, we dressed up as a character from a book like Harry Potter and Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid and lots more.

Rugare- World book day was very fun, we each made a page for our own book of wonders. Have a look the next time you come in!

Super Star Performers!

“This week in P4 it has been a tasty week because we had pancake day yum yum!” – Jan

In maths we have been learning about division and measure. We had to divide ingredients to make pancakes using a recipe then we cooked the pancakes and they were delicious. We had lots of different toppings to choose from and even though it was Miss Diamond’s first attempt at making them, she was very good at it according to Mark.

We used netbooks, ipads, top trump cards and code breaker activities to help us develop our division skills.

We received an email from Skulky the Viking asking for our help. We had to highlight key information from word problems to work out a maths problem for him.

This week in topic, we have been learning all about the key features of a Viking Long house and have started making our very own long house models. We wrote an advert for a ‘Long House For Sale’ and had to include a description of the features, use positive language to persuade our reader and had to have a rhetorical question.

We participated in the school Ash Wednesday service and wrote Lenten promises to prepare us for the beginning of Lent.

We have been preparing for our class assembly which we performed today for the whole school and our parents. We put a lot of effort into this and enjoyed learning about lent in preparation.

Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond, Miss Crookston and P4!

P7/6 Take Cover

It is September 1940 and WWII has been going on for a year now, some people have been calling it the phony war as no one here in Britain have felt the full impact of the war…yet.  Please click below to hear an air raid siren…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schoolradio/subjects/history/ww2clips/sounds/air_raid_siren

TAKE COVER!  In our classroom you see the German bombers overhead and our classroom door is now an entrance to an Anderson Shelter!

Our Literacy work this week has been based around our WWII theme this week,

Reading – we read a memoir from a lady called Eileen Frost who had been a child during WWII and she described her memories of building an Anderson shelter and life in London during the war.

Writing – We watched a short clip of a man called Joseph Robertson who had been a soldier during the war, he also was describing one particular memory of when he was in a battle.  The children then discussed and shared emotive language and ideas about this and wrote a memoir from Joseph’s point of view.  These were well written and used some amazing emotive language.  They are now part of our WWII display in class.  We also used fact sheets about Anderson Shelters to help us re-create an instruction guide on how to build an Anderson Shelter,  we used the Scottish Criterion checklist to help us use good writer’s craft throughout our piece.

Listening and Talking – We are now listening to a text called “Catching Falling Starts” by Karen McCombie.

Image result

Mrs Currie is reading this aloud to us.  It is about a girl called Glory and her little brother called Rich, they are children who were living in London during the outbreak of WWII.  At first their parents did not send them away to the countryside as they wanted to stay together as a family, but after a narrow escape from a Blitz attack (only their Anderson shelter saved them) they are now being evacuated.

This leads us onto our topic focus for next week – Evacuees.  The children will continue to develop their use of emotive writing skills as they put themselves into the shoes of a child being evacuated and write about their journey as they leave home.

In Maths we have started our work on using and interpreting data.  Our focus for this week was to find out how much we already know about this topic in Maths and we started analysing bar graphs.  Everyone was given the opportunity to use data that we gathered in class about our Favourite Flavour of Crisps, using a tally mark chart, and created our own bar graphs.  To help us out we used the following website to show us how to create a bar graph,

http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/grapher.html

Try using this to help you create more graphs at home.  Send a reply back if you manage this.  Next week we will begin to use some data and graphs from WWII to interpret and analyse to find out more statistics linked to this topic.

Have a great weekend.

Mrs Currie

P2 weekly news

In our maths jotters we have been writing the 2 times table. We have also continued to practise counting in twos but with higher numbers. At our independent station we completed a cut and stick activity or a dot to dot activity.

We have also been singing along with the counting by 5 song.

This week we have been learning all about germs. In class we thought about all of the different places that you would find germs and money was one of our answers. On Monday we completed an experiment using salt, vinegar, 1ps and 2p coins.

Ana-“This experiment took most of the copper from the coins and they changed colour.”
We love learning through completing experiments.
img_7068img_7071

We followed on from this by learning how germs spread.
We completed another experiment with glitter.
Lilly- “3 children put soap on their hands and then the first child put glitter on their hands. After this they shook hands with Elenta and she then shook hands with Zoe.”

img_7072img_7075

This allowed us to see how the glitter (germs) passed on from one hand to another hand.

This made us realise just how important it is to wash your hands. We watched this clip which told us when to wash your hands to stop germs from spreading.

Wojciech- “We made our own superhero that helps you wash your hands.” Our superhero had a super power which helped encourage people to wash their hands.

To further our understanding we completed a short read task.

Angelina- On Tuesday “we had to order picture cards for how to wash your hands.”

Ana- “First you put soap on your hands.”
Ryan- “Then you put the tap on.”
Julia-“Next you rub your hands together under the tap.”
Marcus-“
After you rub your hands under the tap you make sure that the soap is off and then you dry your hands.”
In writing this week we wrote instructions for how to wash your hands. Miss Boyes showed us step by step how to wash our hands at the sink. After this we had to write our own instructions, to be successful we had to use Capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and check that our writing made sense.

In PE this week we reflected on all of the games which we have learned so far. After our reflection we became creators and used the equipment to create our own game.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

Money, money, money

This week we have continued to celebrate Catholic Education Week in our school and discussed how we are developing as a community of faith.

We thought about how we could develop as a faith community at home, school and in our parish. We also made a beautiful display ‘Recipe for a faith community’ then wrote our very own recipes. We finished the week with a whole school faith assembly.

Real life contexts have been the focus in maths as we have started learning about money. We have learned to recognise coins from 1p to £2, ask us what colours they are or to find some in your purse! We have also been working out different ways to make totals, Paul M knew that 100 pennies makes £1 and Ephraim knew that 200 pennies made £2 – aren’t they clever!! Our pirate sweet shop opened this week which has allowed us to use money in a real life context and we have been sorting coins in the emergency money banks. Mrs Roy also let us look in her purse to identify what coins she had, this was great fun. She taught us about notes and bank cards too.

In literacy the sounds are getting harder, this week we learned ‘qu and j’, everyone worked really hard to learn these new sounds through our carousel activities – letterjoin magic words on the ipads, choice and challenge tasks, making jellyfish, qu bingo and lots more! Ask your child what challenges they chose this week in literacy and how they self-assessed themselves.

Mr McCurdy tried something new this week, you had to use a large stick and a ball…..it was hockey. We all impressed him with our dribbling skills and keeping our eyes on the ball when moving around the hall. Nathan really got the hang of this and earned an extra dojo point.

Mrs Purdie asked to see some of our jotters this week, she was really pleased to see how hard everyone had been working and how busy everyone had been.  Thank you to the families who came along to Ninian’s Natter to have some learning conversations in the classroom, the children were really proud to show off their learning!

Next week we will be welcoming some visitors to our school and are looking forward to them visiting our classroom to join in with our learning.

Primary 6 Weekly News

This is what we have to say about our learning this week.

Mia- This week in P.E. we done the bleep test, In my group I was the last one in.

Mia St – This week we did a writing assessment about the Victorians. We took notes from watching some videos and put them into a news report.

Nicola –  On Tuesday we went to the  library and checked our books out and played some games, then we got new books.

image1-7 image2-6 image3-6

Neave – This week on our 2nd day of P.E we did a fitness carousel. During our carousel we done sit ups, planks, hold your squats, squats on a bench, star jumps and then we had to do step up on a bench then step off and repeat .

The reason we are doing this fitness thing is because next week we will be using the ropes, but first we need to prove that we are strong enough to use the ropes the way we should use them.

Kieran- this week on Tuesday we did P.E with Mr McCurdy. We did a bleep test there was 3 groups Mr McCurdy got 16.

Aliza- this week we have been very busy in class doing lots and lots of work about the Victorians. Next week it is VERY busy because we are having very special visitors come on Tuesday, on Wednesday we are having a service for Ash Wednesday, on Thursday it is word book day and on friday we will have an assembly! A VERY busy week!!

Amera-Today at golden time people who wrote our school song had to sing the song at the tea and coffee morning and they got crisps and a drink, it was very fun.

Thank you to the parents who came along to Ninian’s Natter this week, it was great to see you.  The pupils enjoy having the opportunity to share their learning and show you all of their hard work.  Next week we will be taking part in World Book Day.  The children can come to school dressed as their favourite book character.  We’ve had lots of great ideas about what we would like to learn that day, so make sure you check our blog next week to find out!
