Time flies in P1…

As the title suggests we have started learning about time and this week the focus was on days of the week, months and daily routines. We listened to some catchy songs to engage us in our learning before doing some tasks. We did a cut and stick sequencing task, worked with a partner and in groups to discuss daily routines, made a class birthday chart and also tried to use simple timetables. Mrs Purdie popped in while we were making a birthday chart and we asked her when her birthday was, can you remember which month it was? Next week we will progress onto learning about analogue and digital clocks and how to tell o’clock times.

We planned out our new topic, The Gruffalo. We read the story and then came up with lots of ideas about activities we could do in class. We added this to our visible plan and our talking book. The nursery are working alongside us on this and we will have opportunities to share our learning as the topic progresses. One of the first suggestions was to create a collage for our classroom so we got to work in teams using different materials, felt, twigs, paint, crepe paper and feathers. It’s starting to look good on the wall and we add to it as we learn more. In reading we did a picture this activity when from memory we had to draw a detailed picture of the Gruffalo,we did really well with this. Then in writing we wrote a description of the Gruffalo using the drawings we had made. We added some of these to our class display.

Our transition work with the nursery continued and we invited the AM and PM groups over so we could share the Talking Transition Book with them. We told them all about school and answered some of their questions. Next week they will join us for a literacy and mathematics lesson.

Remember we are on holiday on Monday and PE kit (indoor and outdoor) needed for Tuesday.

P7/6 News

This week P6 have been learning about the dangers of smoking and tobacco from Michelle who works for West Lothian Council’s Drug and Alcohol Service.

Isabelle – “Michelle taught us about the dangers of smoking”

Jessica – “The doll Smoky Sue helped us to see the damaging effects of smoking”

In class we have been continuing our learning about flowering plants.  We have now learned about the individual parts of a flower’s anatomy, anther, filament, stigma and style.  This has helped to deepen our understanding of how insects are pollinators.

Jessica – “we dissected a flower to see all the different parts”

Freya – “For our writing we had to create our own imagined flower and then design and write the seed packet for the seeds”

The children were given the challenge to try and use a simile within their description of what their flower looks or smells like when it is in full bloom.  There were some super examples,  Next week we are moving onto looking at the growth of a seed and charting the length of time it takes to grow and what conditions it needs to grow.

In PE we have been learning the athletic field skills for shot put, and long jump as well as using sprint and pacing skills for the 60m and 800m running.

In Maths we have further developed our money skills.  P7 have been looking at debit and credit cards and started work on APR interest rates.  This has meant we have been practising our percentage finding skills, it is interesting to see how much money a bank can make from lending money “it is a business at the end of the day” is what Mrs Currie said and Broady and Mark quickly pointed out “it is also a business at the beginning of the day too!” (ha ha).  P6 have been using the four processes to work out totals, differences, how much multiple items and individual items cost.  When using the written method we had to revise our understanding of making sure the decimal points line up to keep our place values correct before completing the calculation.  Some of us used REAL MONEY to help us work out totals and costs, it is always good to use real life material as it helps us ensure that we can transfer these valuable life skills into practise outside of school.

Well done everyone,

Mrs Currie

P4 Weekly News!

This has been an exciting week in Primary 4!

We have, as part of our topic, been researching endangered animals from different climates. We used world atlases to help us identify different climates on a world map. We have learned about tropical, warm, polar and temperate climates.

In writing, we wrote formal letters to The WWF (World Wildlife Fund) to ask for any possible information leaflets, posters or video clips that they could send us to help learn more about the work that they do and how we can help. We will keep you posted as to whether we get a reply.

In maths, we have been learning about time. We have been looking at how many days are in each month and used a catchy little song to help us learn. We then moved on to learning how to read analogue clocks looking at 5 minute intervals. Trying to decide which hand was the minute hand and which hand was the hour hand proved to be tricky but also working out if we were using minutes past or minutes to challenged us a little so we will continue working on this. Haseeb enjoyed using netbooks to play time games. Charlie enjoyed using loop cards to help him learn.

We have been continuing to prepare for our First Holy Communion and have been learning about The Last Supper. We can recognise the link between the Last supper and the celebration of The Eucharist and know how we can participate in this special part of the mass. We are looking forward to having a visit from Fr Kenneth on Tuesday as part of our Confirmation preparations.

We had art this week with Mrs Young where we drew self-portraits using pencil. We had to include every fine detail to make sure it looked exactly like us!

We are looking forward to a long weekend and hope you are too!

Have a good one, P4 and Miss Diamond :)!

Nursery News

Although a shorter week it was just as busy for Nursery! First of all we welcomed new members to our St Ninian’s family. Joining our staff team is Mrs Brogan Conway who has replaced Mrs Craig as our other Nursery teacher. She will be in Nursery on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with Mrs Caskie in Nursery on a Monday and a Tuesday.  Also joining us in the AM session is Mrs Carol Martinek an Early Years Practioner who will be the key worker for our new yellow group. We are looking forward to working with our new team members.

We also welcomed Abhay and Ameya who have joined the yellow group in our AM session. We have a further  four children joining this group in the coming weeks. In our PM session we welcomed Martin and look forward to Harry joining us on Monday we hope you all enjoy your time with us at nursery.

We had to say goodbye to some friends at the beginning of the week as our caterpillars had turned into butterflies during the holidays. The children got the opportunity to have a look at the cocoons and observe the butterflies eating and drinking before we released them. They were not too keen to come out of their nets so Mrs Mushet and Mrs MacDonald had to lift them out, some flew away but others were placed gently amongst our flowers. We will be keeping an eye out for them in the coming weeks.

As part of Outdoor week and also our transition programme we went on a Gruffalo woodland walk along with our Primary 1 friends.  No Gruffalo was found but we all had a super time exploring the woods. The Gruffalo  will be a joint topic along with the two Primary 1 classes. We will be getting the childrens’ ideas next week in order to take this topic forward and put them on our learning wall as well as anything else that arises from the childrens’ interests. Our transition programme continues next week with the Nursery children visiting the Primary 1 classes along with their buddies to have a look at the talking books. These books are put together by the children in Primary 1 and show all the experiences that will take place when the nursery children come into school. Each pre school child will get the opportunity to bring this book home so that you can discuss this with them. It is going to be a very busy but exciting term!

On our Nursery Facebook page there are photographs of both the butterflies being released and our woodland walk.

Today Mrs Beattie one of our AM Early Years Practioner started another block of her PEEP classes. We will be putting a weekly update on our Blog of all the exciting activities they get up to.

On Monday we will walking to the library for our monthly visit to hear a story. We all love going along!

A small reminder that Monday 1st May is a holiday and Thursday 4th May is an inservice day.

Have a lovely weekend.

The Nursery Team.

P7/6 News

This week some of our P6 children have been at a residential camp on Tuesday and Wednesday.  A great time was had by all, it would appear that canoeing was a real highlight with these being only a few of the comments that have been shared,

Oskar – “I fell into the water twice while I was canoeing and sailing, I loved it.”

Aurora – “The best bit was canoeing and I didn’t even get wet!”

Billie – “Miss McCormack said I was a strong at paddling”

Tristan – “It was really great!”

In class we got into the Outdoor Learning  spirit by doing work on plants.  We have learned about photosynthesis and the main structure of a flowering plant.  This involved us going on a hunt around our school grounds to find different types of leaves and then examining them for the veins and evidence of the glucose produced during photosynthesis.  Here is a short video that we watched to help us learn about this process.

We have now started some work on learning about the structure of a flowering.  We have labelled a diagram of the male and female parts and will follow this up next week by learning about the function and process of each part, pollination, the development of a seed and seed dispersal.

In Numeracy we have focused again on re engaging with our times tables and many of us have identified that the 9x table facts are not springing to our minds in a CLICK.  Those of us who feel we know our tables well are trying to apply them in more complex calculations to solve problems.  Next week our focus will be MONEY!

Have a lovely weekend.

Outdoor learning

This week we tried to take a lot of our learning outdoors and everyone had great fun.

In literacy we did some spelling work outside using the large chalks then played outdoor Frys word bingo. It got a bit messy but we all agreed that it was a fun way to practise our Frys words. Well done to Paul M for being our bingo winner!

In maths we were learning about positional language and directions. We played lots of fun games to help us, eg. Stand beside the door, sit on top of the table (don’t tell Mrs Purdie we were on top of the tables), sit under the table, stand beside the gate, etc. We also used hoops outside and had to follow more instructions, eg. Jump in the hoop, stand behind the hoop. Then Sahara had a great idea to help us remember left and right, she taught us all how to dab then we had to sing,” dab to the left, dab to the right”. We also used this song:

For our science learning we focused on seasons and went on a spring scavenger hunt. We had to use our senses to see, touch, hear and smell things. We all set to work and recorded our findings on our clipboards.

We then shared this learning with the PM nursery when we all joined together to go for a walk to the Dedridge pond and woods. It was a lovely afternoon and we were super excited to see lots of squirrels, ducks and 2 swans, we think the mummy swan was sitting on her nest guarding some eggs, we will go back in a few weeks to check how she is getting on. We also spotted some bat boxes and different types of flowers and trees.

To finish the week off we decided to stop off at the park for some fun and games. It was lovely to see everyone playing nicely together, seeing lots of smiles and hearing lots of laughter!

Welcome back P2/3!
