Also in class we have been collecting data of our favourite fruit and sport. We recorded tally marks and made a bar graph.

We have been learning about alliteration and we made a poster to promote healthy food which included alliteration.

We spoke about junk food adverts and how they use toys and bright colours to encourage us to eat junk food. We will look out for healthy food adverts at home.

On Monday we watched a clip about running and then we took notes of what we watched. Miss Boyes showed us an example of how to take notes by using bullet points.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

Health Week in P2/3

Chloe – synergy was my favourite because it helped me to get fitter.

Levente – I liked Judo the best.

Andrew – cross country running was great because I could practise running fast.

Rachel – next step dance was fun. We did hip hop dancing and I’ve never done that before.

Zuzanna – I like doing head stands in yoga!

P1R weekly news

Another busy week in P1R,so busy that we didn’t get a chance to take many photographs.

In reading we are having a final push over the next 5 weeks to try and read all of our P1 sight words. We like to use the whiteboards when taking part in the Frys word challenge and when it was sunny we went outside to practise as well. We have also been learning about ‘cloze’ sentences, we have to choose the right word from the word bank to finish the sentence. It can be tricky but we just have to be confident and use our knowledge of phonics to help us read the sentences.

In numeracy we are developing our understanding of numbers to 20. We practised sequencing them and putting them into order. We also learned about the language before, after, and between. Outside we wrote numberlinds with chalk and then played a before, after, between game. We all had fun in the sun.

In RE we continued to learn about Mary our Mother and were really thankful to all receive our own rosary beads to use in class. We also spent time finishing our display to Mary, some of us made stained glass windows and others chose to make a bunch of flowers for her. Everyone behaved really well at the Feast of the Ascension mass and joined in with the prayers and singing.

During transition we took the nursery children out into the ‘big’ playground to show them around and introduce them to our outdoors toy box. It will soon be time for us to start our transition to P2. Over the coming weeks we will find out about our new classes and get to meet our new teacher, it’s very exciting.

Remember Health Week starts on Monday, come prepared for all weathers and sports! It should be a great week!!

AWESOME P3

Good afternoon from Primary 3!

We have had another really busy week and here are some of our highlights!

RE

Primary 3 were learning about the Feast of the Ascension and behaved beautifully during our Mass at the Lanthorn on Thursday. They really enjoyed listening to the Primary 4s who shared their special Communion hymn with us.

Jack – ‘It was perfection!’  Emma – ‘It was good because they all tried their best.’

During the month of May we have also continued our learning about Our Lady and the importance of saying the Rosary prayer regularly.  We now know that she appeared to St Bernadette in Lourdes, France and the three children in Fatima, Portugal – Mrs Scott has promised to bring in special photos from Fatima because her oldest son Matthew was there for the 100th anniversary celebrations recently!  The children have also been able to use their individual Rosary beads, received as a special gift this week – practising moving along one bead at a time to say the different prayers.

LITERACY

Writing –  ‘We loved writing about Humpty Dumpty because we got to use our imagination and we could all write different stories about what happened to him. It was up to us to decide what he was doing before he went on the wall, why he was on the wall, how he managed to fall off the wall and what happened next!’ – Emily & Niamh.

The children had some fantastic ideas about why Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall – they really entertained me on Thursday!

He was trying to fly; He was pulling his socks up and fell over; He was trying to catch a butterfly: He was watching a parade and was leaning forward to see more closely; He was reaching for an apple from a tree. Brilliant aren’t they?

Reading – ‘It was fun getting to read two books on the netbook then find the answers to the questions all by myself. One of them was about Chameleons and the other one was about a type of hippo!’ – Orla; ‘It was good to do this on my own because I wouldn’t normally read those kinds of books.’ – Emma; ‘They were non-fiction books.’

GLOBAL GOALS – Having a  Quality Education

Thank you for all the foodbank pictures as our class collage is now complete.

Cameron – ‘We were learning about schools in Africa this week and some schools don’t even have any fences around them.’ Teegan – ‘I liked seeing how happy the children were when they got a better school.’ Kate – ‘They didn’t have any classrooms and had to do their work outside.’ Michael – ‘The country in Africa we looked at was Ethiopia.’ Orla – ‘When they got new toilets they were outside.’

SCIENCE

Sophie YM – ‘I learned that the Earth spins round and round. When the sun shines on one side of the Earth, it means that it is daytime there and where it doesn’t shine that means it is night-time.’

Maliha – ‘It takes 24 hours for the Earth to spin around and that is why we have 24 hours in a day.’

ART

Emma – ‘It was really interesting making my McCoo Highland Cow. I hadn’t used oil pastels before.’ Richard – ‘We learned that we had to use different colours for the stripes and draw them from the top to the bottom.’

EVERYONE –  ‘We learned that the man who made these pictures is an artist and his name was Steve McCoo.’

MATHS

‘I’ve learned in Measure that you can use different things to measure with.’ – Emma; ‘You use scales to measure weight and we were reading kg.’ – Daniel; Emily – ‘We were reading different scales about kg.’ Richard – ‘When the arrow is in the middle of two numbers it means ½.’

Enjoy what is left of the sunshine!

From Mrs Scott and Primary 3.

Nursery News

The sun has got his hat on – hip hip hip hooray… The sun has got his hat on and he’s coming out to play!

We have been blessed with beautiful weather this week and we have made the most of it in the nursery!

The PM group had their second, and final, trip to Almondell on Tuesday – have a look in our talking book for all the wonderful pictures that were created whilst we were there with Kirsty the ranger! The AM group are very excited about their forthcoming trip on Tuesday of next week. Thank you for the prompt return of permission slips – we have a few payments outstanding, please ensure you have paid £1.50 by Tuesday.

Transition was fantastic this week as we had a playtime, with our buddies, in the school playground! The boys and girls got the opportunity to join the P1 classes in the school playground and learned all about what happens at playtime at school. They have to get used to eating a snack as they play with their friends – and of course, putting their rubbish in the bin. We listened for the sound of the school bell and the whistle used by Mrs Smith so that we know when to come back and line up in our classes. Next week our transition will be in joining P1 for some health week activities.

Next week is HEALTH WEEK! We have a busy timetable, thanks to Mr McCurdy and the nursery staff for finding lots of fun activities to promote a healthy lifestyle 🙂 some of us had super ideas about being healthy and drew some lovely pictures in our talking books – have a look and see what we know and what we want to learn! The timetable for health week will be displayed in the nursery and will be on the weekly update. Please note that THURSDAY will be a ‘bring your scooter to nursery’ day – we have a selection of bikes and scooters for anyone who doesn’t have one. And we will welcome parents/carers/friends from 10.30-11 and 2.30-3 as we walk the daily mile together.

We are offering a parent/carer drop in session on WEDNESDAY 7th JUNE from 11.15am – 11.50am. We will have Trolls on the SmartBoard for the boys and girls to enjoy, and tea/coffeee/biscuits for the adults. We are looking for YOUR views before we tackle our nursery action plan for Session 17/18. Parents, carers, grandparents, friends – your views matter to us and will help us move forward positively for our children next session.

Have a great weekend!

Dreaming of being Doctors in Primary 2!

In time this week we have been learning all about the difference between am and pm on a digital clock.

We have been finding it tricky to understand that 1 am has a number 1 on the clock but when it’s pm it changes to 13.

We will continue to work on this.

Here are some games to play at home to help us understand the difference.

Telling the time game choose option
“read time to the hour and half past”
then choose
“24 hour clock”.

Also look at Sumdog for a homework challenge.

This week we went on a visit to the Health Centre.

Wojciech “We got to see all of the files for all of the people who go to the Dedridge Health Centre. We weren’t allowed to touch them because they are private.”

Ryan- There were 11,000 files in the Health centre.”

Lilly- “We went into the doctors room and the lady showed us a blood pressure machine.”

Filip- “The thermos scan checks your temperature and you put this in your ear.”

Angelina- “We got to have a turn of the stethoscope and listen for our heart beats.”

Leo-“You go to the nurses for your injections; we went in to have a look.”

We really enjoyed our visit to the Health Centre and were very happy to get a special certificate.

In writing this week we wrote about being a community helper.

We tried to choose different community helpers to be and our learning intention was to include conjunctions in our writing.

Miss Boyes really enjoyed reading about the different jobs that we would like to do in the community.

Also this week we have been learning about the difference between needs and wants. We were a bit confused at first because some of us thought that we needed things like a TV or tablet.

However we now know that this is not something we need as we could live without it.

We spoke a lot about our rights and how the things we need help us meet our rights.

For topic we looked on google maps and mapped out the different places near us where we could go for help. We drew pictures on our own map and labelled the pictures.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend, from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

P7/6 Flower Power

We have now completed our work on studying flowers, we will continue to watch our long term investigation about the effect of fertilisers (plant food) over the coming weeks.  We have created a wall display to showcase our learning,

Our next focus is going to be linked with healthy minds and bodies.  This will kick start with Health Week next week.  Please remember to wear your sports gear all week and be prepared every day to be outside regardless of the weather! As part of exploring healthy bodies we will be using our Food Technology trolley and creating some delicious meals which will allow us to discuss food hygiene as well as the Eat Well Plate.

In our RE work we will be covering God’s Loving Plan lessons which focus on our developing bodies and relationships.  At the parental conversations this week there was an opportunity to go and view the work we will cover, also the P7 children have received a leaflet today with relevant information (P6 will receive theirs next week).

In Maths we have consolidated our learning about division.  Everyone now seems to be more confident within their own level to tackle these types of calculations.

Homework for the next week will focus on personal reading.  Everyone has been asked to choose a book and to prepare an oral book report to share with the class.

In preparation for next week’s healthy writing, we are going to be asked the question, if you could invite anyone in the world to dinner who would it be and why?  What would you cook for them?

I can’t wait to see who is coming to tea!?

Enjoy the sunshine.

Primary 6 Weekly News

Emma-This week we went to the nursery and we gave our buddies a tour of the primary1 and primary 2, 3 playground and we also went to the Lanthorn and went into the big hall and had a special mass for the Ascension! J

Amera-This week we seen our buddies and let them play in the playground. We also got to watch p1m show and Neave and I were doing the music and laptop. For golden time we are going outside to play that is going to be fun at school we are all TOO warm.

The sunshine has been out this week and all the children have been telling me lots of stories about outdoor activities after school – it’s great to hear how active the children are!

This week in class we have been working on our Spanish numbers and letters. We used a few songs to help us and played some guesing games. Here are two of the videos we used:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56OXP92SUBQ

Well done to everyone for giving it a try! We are all learning Spanish together and help each other with the pronunciation as best we can 🙂

Our topic this week has been focusing on life cycles. We learned all about the life cycles of flowers, frogs and butterflies. We also looked at how the life cycle of the fairy wasp is a bit different because it is a parasite.

Thank you to everyone for coming along to parent’s night, it was great to see you all! A reminder that we have Health Week next week so all children should come to school in sportswear every day.

Let’s hope the sunshine lasts! Have a great weekend.

P4 Weekly News!

This week has been a busy and boiling week in P4! The weather was roasting, not that we are complaining!!

In PE, we have been doing the high jump. Our Class champions were Aleksander for the boys who managed to jump 1m15 and Aoife for the girls who managed to jump 1m10! How impressive is that!?

In maths, we have been learning about AM and PM and 24 hour time. This has been pretty tricky to get the hang of but we are making good progress.

‘I have learned that you don’t use AM or PM when working with 24 hour time.’ Evie

‘I found time tricky in the beginning but I now think learning time is fun!’ Ailie

‘I found time really fun at first and am coping well with what I have learned.’ Jacob

In writing this week, we made posters about the causes of endangerment to try to persuade and make people more aware of the impact it is having on the environment.

In topic, we have been using Microsoft word to make fact files about different endangered species. We had to include information, 1 picture and use different fonts. We then painted pictures of our chosen animal to go with the fact files.

We celebrated the Feast of the Ascension yesterday at a mass with the whole school and enjoyed having the opportunity to perform a song that we learned at the confirmation retreat.

Have a great weekend, P4 and Miss Diamond :)!
