P5D Weekly News

This week P5D have been working really hard. We have been learning all about Global Goals and are in the process of using iMovie to make a video about them. We are working in groups to make our video and each group has chosen to focus on a different goal. Some of the goals we are focussing on are; Climate Action, Good Health and Wellbeing, Life Below Water, Affordable and Clean Energy, Water sanitation and  Zero Hunger.

“Using iMovie is fun and I like working in groups!” – Maliha

“I enjoy using iMovie because in groups we get to share ideas and see if we all agree.” – Michelle.

“It is fun using iMovie!” – Sophie R

In art this week we were creating 3D drawings and creating optical illusions.

“I loved doing the 3D hand again, it makes it look like it is popping out of the page.” – Andrew

“My railway track actually looked really real!” – Robbie

In maths, we have started a new topic. We have been learning how to do algebra. We know how to solve simple equations that have unknown letters or symbols in the calculation.

“It is interesting to learn about algebra even though it is tricky!” – Rhia

“Using the Numicon helped us find the missing number!” – Ethan

In PE, we continued with high jump. Some people managed to jump over 1m15cm.

“In PE it was fun trying to jump over the rope!” – Sophie D

“It is more challenging because we had to use a scissor kick and try to dodge the rope and land.” – Hasan

“I liked doing it because you got to jump over it but I didn’t land on my feet so will try that next time.” – Calvin

We have continued with PM writing this week and will be using this to write a descriptive piece next week.

Have a great weekend, P5D and Miss Diamond.

Primary 7 Weekly News

We have had a very busy 2 weeks in primary 7 after our Easter break.

In Maths we have moved on to learning about measure. We are working on converting units of measure and measuring perimeter and area. Mrs Lauder also took us to the pond where we worked in pairs to calculate the height of trees. We used 3 different methods to do this. 1 was using a pencil to estimate; 1 was by measuring the height of out partner and making an estimation of how many of our partner would fit in the tree; and the other was by looking through our legs at a 45 degree angle. It was good fun learning outside and we would like to do it more often.

In writing we have been focusing on descriptive writing. We have written a factual description of the school. We also worked on writing a persuasive letter.

Our topic for this term will be the Global Goals. We have already looked at being responsible citizens by thinking about our consumption. We are working in groups on a different Global Goal each to create  short movie to show our parents.

Primary 7 leadership team were involved in showing Education Scotland around our school on Tuesday. It was a busy day but everyone did a fantastic job.

It is set to be a very busy last term for primary 7. All transition information will be shared as soon as we know about in. The pupils are very excited for secondary school and for school camp.

I’m sure it’ll be a great last term!

P6 News!

A busy week in P6!

On Monday we enjoyed some athletics games for PE including ‘rock, paper, scissors, chase’ – we are building our skills in movement and will be looking forward to our P6 cross country event later in the month!

In Number talks, we have been looking at multiplication. Mrs Conway has been learning so many new strategies from the class – her mind has been blown! We are spotting patterns and simplifying problems to help us find our answer. This will continue over the next few weeks.

In Word Boost we made connections through creating posters which gave a description of selected words using words and pictures. Can you child remember any of our boost words?! Are they starting to use any advanced vocabulary at home? Leave a comment to let us know:)

We are really excited about our Global Goals showcase (Thurs 16th May) and spent lots of time this week working with our groups to come up with ideas for our imovies! If you want to chat about the global goals at home a good starting g point t is to watch this video as a family;

As we reflected on our week some of the class shared their highlights;

Sean – our global goals work…

Jan – learning about divisibility in maths…

Sam – athletics, high jump with Mr mccurdy

Mrs Conway – that we managed to clean the filter on the projector and it stayed on for longer than ten minutes at a time…..

Next week (short week!) we are going to be working on finishing our global goals presentations and updating our OneNote profiles! We will also be saying cheerio to Mrs Kerr as she finishes on Thursday for her maternity leave 💚

Nursery News

What a pleasure it is to work in this Nursery and provide such a warm educational  environment for your children. This week has welcomed children to our setting and children back from holiday. ALL of them have settled back so comfortably and have been engaged in quality learning experiences.

MONDAY – saw three children join us in the nursery, the children were so welcoming and responsible as they helped these children to fit in with the Nursery routines.

TUESDAY – Education Scotland paid a visit to our school and Nursery today to ask staff, children and parents about our wonderful Head Teacher and the impact she has made to St Ninian’s Primary School. The children had an extra P.E session this week with the P.E students. They were amazing and provided a great athletics session up on the field.

WEDNESDAY – Welly Wednesday gave the children the opportunity to see the Swan on her nest. Lots of discussion followed about Cygnets and how many babies she will have. We will revisit her each week to see!! Some of the ducks were following us on the path, I think they though of bag of sticks was a bag of bread. This gave the children to see the birds up close and identify the colours and differences in the feather patterns.

THURSDAY – Following on from yesterday’s experiences with the ducks some children were engaged in hand painting Swans. We decided to look in our birds book to find out what the ducks were called. They are Mallard ducks. The female has the brown feathers and the male has green feathers on his head. P.E with Mr McCurdy involved the High Jump. Children were encouraged to run along the benches and jump over the elasticated rope. A great Athletic experience thank you Mr McCurdy.

FRIDAY – lots of outdoor play and investigation outside today as the children helped to look after our resources. The quality of play is amazing as the children risk assess and use open ended resources to build frames and constructions.

Have a lovely long weekend everyone!!! Love from the Staff Team x

Nursery returns on Wednesday 8th of May

P2 Update

We have had a busy week.  Read on to find out more.

Numeracy – we have looking at number sequences and working out patterns.  If the numbers are going up in value we have learned that this means we need to add and if they are going down we need to subtract.  Then we had to work out what the intervals were between the numbers so that we could continue the pattern.  We have also been exploring our understanding of “doubles”, we then have linked this to our two times table!  so we now know that 3 + 3 = 6 can also be written as 2 X 3 = 6.  Ask us a 2 x table equation and we’ll solve it using our doubles.  As a challenge discuss how halving could be linked to this?

Literacy – we have started to learn how to write an effective description.  We read a description about The New Girl.  We then applied this to help us write a description of someone we know.   We learned that using the conjunction “because” was really useful to allow us to give examples of a characteristic.

RE – we have learned all about when Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday.

Global Goals – we have been learning how to look after our planet Earth by using the messages from the Global Goals to help us.  The children also all received a letter today about our class trip to Polkemmet Owl Sanctuary that will link with this topic.

Have a great long weekend,

Mrs Currie

Teacher voice

This has been my first full week working with P6/7 and I have loved getting to know the class. The energy and enthusiasm in this class is amazing!

This week we have been working hard on introducing measurement, our new topic in mathematics. We have been measuring our own items around the classroom and converting the measurements. We wrote all about St. Ninian’s for descriptive writing and learned pets in Spanish so it has been a busy week for all of us.

We had an entertaining drama lesson with some very funny improvised sketches to warm up and then made ‘freeze frames’ about one of the Global Goals in teams. Photos should be on Twitter so check them out! Our topic wall is starting to look amazing with all of the work we have been doing ahead of the showcase.

P1D Highlights

Here are our highlights this week:

Pati: I liked reading this week. My book was about Sam and Tam going to the mud.

Luke: I liked the red rainbow learning. You had to match the eggs with words that rhymed that means they sound the same. I matched wall and ball.

Can you think of any other words that rhyme?

What rhymes with man? Shop? Yellow?

Igor: I liked the blue rainbow learning. I had to count numbers with cereal. I counted 11.

Can you find something exciting to count with? How long would it take you to count all of your breakfast cereal?!

Layla: I liked PE, I was jumping. I jumped really high.

Anna: I liked doing our topic about jobs. I learned what peoples jobs help us with. A teacher helps boys and girls learn.

Who would help you if you found an injured animal?

Who would help you if you didn’t feel safe in the water at the swimming pool?

Roma: I liked the blue rainbow learning. You needed to get cheerios and glue them on to the 20 frame. A 20 frame is like 10 and 10, I made the number 19 so I had one empty bit on my 20 frame.

Michelle: I liked doing the high jump in PE. I jumped over the rope.

Mara: I liked the high jump in PE because I jumped very high.

Paul: I liked the red rainbow learning you had to match the Easter eggs with rhyming words. A rhyming word has the same letters at the end of the word. I matched wig and pig.

Jane: I liked the green rainbow learning. You had to listen to the word on the smart board and then you had to find the word that matched because it rhymes. Tree and bee rhymes.

Here is a link to the game we played:

http://www.literactive.com/Download/live.asp?swf=story_files/washing_line_rhyme_US.swf

Scott: I liked writing about going to the desert island. A monster went to the desert island and he liked shells and the whale took him to the waves and he found a ship wreck and a treasure chest.

What would happen if a cat went to a desert island?

Shea: I liked doing the green rainbow learning, you had to match the rhyming words on the smart board like wall and ball. The same letters at the end makes words rhyme.

Carter: I liked the builders site this week. I was building lots of things, so many that I can’t remember but I did build a house. It had a big roof but looked like a space rocket.

Lucas: I liked the pink rainbow learning. You had to match up the things that people would help you with. A policeman could help you find someone if you get lost.

Amelia: I liked making the horse in the tuff tray. I used a big stick and I put on the horses head and the tail. I stick up with cellotape.

Rojin: I liked going to the library, we had to take back our books then we picked new books. I picked a book about a green dog and a green squirrel.

What was the book that you picked from the library?

P5D Weekly News!

In Primary 5D, we have been doing some outdoor learning. We used devices to take photos of different landscapes around our school building and are going to use collage to recreate the image. We have been working in teams to decide/plan what collage resources we will need to make the landscape look realistic.

“It was fun to find a good spot to take the picture!” – Ola

In maths, we have learning about percentages and are able to apply our knowledge to find a simple percentage of a number and make relevant link to fractions and decimals. Some of us have been looking at the link between multiplication and division and used dice games to help us.

“Maths was really fun!” – Sophie R

We have introduced our new HWB topic, Global Goals this week. We got into groups of 3 or 4 and chose 1 Global Goal to research. We will be inviting you to a showcase later this month to help you understand more about the Goals through video clips.

“It was good fun to use technology to design a logo for our goal and I am excited to make our video!” – Maliha

In PE, we have been developing skills in both the long jump and the high jump. In the high jump, we were trying to jump higher than 1m.

“In PE, it was fun learning the scissor kick!” – Angel

“When we done the scissor kick it was very fun but sometimes it was quite challenging to jump high!” – Levente

In writing, we used Newsround as a stimulus to write a news report about one of the stories that interested us. This was an extended piece of writing as we have just introduced our next block of PM writing which is focussing on descriptive texts.

“I enjoyed doing the news report and wrote about the world’s biggest teddy bear!” – Emily

We worked with P4 this week to teach them how to use SWAY. We demonstrated skills we have already learned so that they can use this programme to present information.

“I liked working with the P4s and teaching them how to use SWAY!” – Sophie D

“I like getting to know a bit about the P4s when we were helping them use SWAY!” – Michelle

“I liked helping the P4s make a presentation ‘all about us’ and getting to learn a bit about them!” – Morgan

Congratulations to Emily for being awarded our praise postcard this week for her efforts in writing. Well done!

Have a great long weeked, Miss D and Primary 5D!
