Nursery News

Another week has flown by in the Nursery. Our school corner continues to be popular with the children practising their writing and mark making. We have also had lots of role play with the fire station and house corner.

In the creative area this week some of the children made masks to be super heroes and some banners were made for our Sports day planned for next week.

Robots and astronauts popped up at the construction area and in the library we have been reading “Elmer” which is our book of the week.

Today it was the turn of AM children to have a bake sale along with Mrs Roy’s class and the fantastic total of £172  was raised. This will be split between the two classes and we will discuss with  the children what they would like to  buy for Nursery with this money. A great big thank you to all the parents and carers who very kindly donated lots of delicious and yummy cakes. We really appreciate your support.

We also celebrated our last Achievement Assembly of this session today and a big congratulations to our successful learners and confident individuals Casper from AM and Poppy from PM. Well done to you both.

Just a little  reminder that we will be having our Nursery Sports Day on Tuesday 21st June at 10 am and 2pm (weather permitting).  If possible could the children wear a top the colour of their group and wear appropriate footwear. It will be fun races and there will be a race at the end for the parents and carers. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday. Our Nursery Graduation for our preschool children  is planned for Wednesday 29th at 10am and 2pm. More details on this will follow next week.

Have a lovely weekend.

Another fun filled week in P1D!

The end of term may be near but in Primary 1D the learning is still going strong! We had a great start to the week when we had a Judo workshop! It was great fun working with a partner and you would be surprised how strong we are for being so small!

In maths, we have been revisiting addition and subtraction as it has been a while since we covered that in P1! Miss Diamond was blown away with how much we had remembered and how we were able to share different strategies that we used to work out the answers! Marcus enjoyed taking on the role of the teacher in our bingo game.

We enjoyed learning about minibeasts recently and linked this to our art this week! We made minibeast finger print gardens! These will be coming home at the end of term but here is a sneaky peek!

To end the week, we had our final Primary 1 Ninian’s Natter! We had one group correcting any green for growths in our writing jotters, one group completing our Learner’s Journeys and one group choosing something to work on using the iPad’s!

A VERY exciting time for us was finding out our new classes and who was going to be our new teachers!!

Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond and P1D!

Busy bees in P1R

This has been a very busy week for P1R as for two mornings they worked in the P7 classroom to allow the nursery children to spend some time in the P1 classrooms in preparation for next session. The children enjoyed sitting on the ‘big chairs’ and working at the ‘big tables’. As always the children showed how responsible they were and continued with their carousel activities in the P7 classroom.

In literacy we have been revising all the sounds we have learned by doing lots of word building and spelling activities. Next week we will focus on the alphabet particularly looking at vowels/consonants/alphabetical order/letter names in preparation for P2. Mrs Gardner was working with the children on their Fry’s words and they all ‘blew her socks off’ as they know so many words now -well done everyone!!

In maths we have been learning about estimation, which to begin with was tricky. We have been estimating in our carousel activities, here are some of the activities we did: guess how many cubes will fit in our shoes?, measuring with cubes, estimation games on the smartboard, and many more. We all agreed that we are making more ‘accurate’ estimates now.

In IDL we started a mini-topic about minibeasts and enjoyed playing guess who?, writing our very own clues for a guess who game, matching minibeasts, drawing minibeasts and learning about minibeast habitats.

Here were some of the clues the children made up, see if you can guess the minibeast they are describing:

” I have 8 legs and I make webs. I eat insects. I am creepy and black.” Dominic

“I fly beside water. You can almost see through my wings. I have a sharp tail.” James

“I have black spots and I can fly. I have six legs. I am red and black.” Alice

“Butterfly’s are beautiful and pretty and they can fly. They are colourful. They like to go to warm places.” Oma

PE was great fun as we learned a new game, ‘Rounders’. Everyone listened carefully to the rules then split into 2 teams – fielders and batters. I was really impressed at how quickly everyone picked up the rules and we all had good fun out in the sunshine.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!! (Sorry no pictures, technical issues with blog this week)

What is your guesstimate?

We have had a different week in P1D as we had to vacate our classroom for the nrsery boys and girls to use it for transition! We were mainly based in the school hub and loved being on the big chairs! We all stayed very focussed and learned lots of new things!

In maths we have been learning about estimation and measure! Some of us found it very tricky when trying have a guess as we didn’t want to get it wrong but by the end of the week we were brilliant at it!

In literacy we have been doing end of term assessments on all of the sounds we have learned during P1! We have been practising word building and spelling our tricky words too. In Reading we have been reading about minibeasts! We loved the story about ‘Superworm’. One of our favourite ativities was reading the descriptin of a minibeast and finding the matchig picture! We wrote stories about minibeasts and had to give clues about who we were, can you guess what Lennon wrote about… ‘I have colourful wings and I am beautiful. I fly from flower to flower. What am I?’

In PE we had some extra practise at running using the track in preperation for sports day but have also been learning how to play rounders! This was a real challenge last week but this week we were fab at it! Team work makes the dream work in P1D!

Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond and P1D!

P2M Weekly News

Firstly, apologies for no photographs this week – it was such a busy week we forgot to take any!

Our spelling focus for this week was tricky words which made the ‘o’ sound. We spotted that in a lot of tricky words the ‘o’ sound is made by the letter ‘a’. This made remembering the spelling of words a little bit easier. Throughout the week we participated in lots of active spelling activities to help us with our tricky words this week. The children have really enjoyed playing the snakes and ladders game this week with their words, so much so that they have asked for this to be included in homework again next week!

We are almost finished our athletics block of learning in PE and this week we participated in the 2oom race and the 400m race.

The winners in our class in the 200m race were Katie, Teegan, Ava, Jack, Pawel and Robbie.

The winners in the 4oom race were Ava, Emily, Ola, Jack, Michael and Richard.

The 400m was really tricky because we had to run around the track twice. We were learning about how to pace ourselves during these longer races. Next week we have the 800m race and a relay race!

We have came to an end of our division topic in number work and next week will begin our consolidation of a lot of strategies we have used this year.

Our topic of ‘People Who Help Us’ has also came to an end and we have really enjoyed this topic. We have  been given the opportunity to interact with a range of different services our community has to offer us and enjoyed learning about these services too. We started our topic of ‘Summer’ and what a great week to start this topic with the lovely weather. Look out for lots of outdoor learning and fun summer activities over the next few weeks.

Miss Meechan and P2M

Fun and friendship

I can’t believe how quickly the weeks are flying by, not long to go now!

In our literacy this week we have continued to learn about ar/or/ir/er words. Everyone is getting really good at identifying which pattern they hear in the words even though they sound very similar. We enjoyed playing the Aar Pirate game with a partner and competed against one another to get four in a row. We also wrote sentences in our jotters keeping our writing neat in preparation for P2, used the magnetic letters to make words and played some games on the smartboard.

In maths we have been skip counting in 2’s and learning about odd and even numbers, we did this through songs, games, written tasks and practical tasks. We also had a visitor to the class, Mrs Gallagher, from the WL Numeracy team who did some fun counting on activities with us using counters, numicon and dot patterns, she was really impressed at how well the children were doing in their maths work!

In our PE lessons we got the chance to go outside and use the running tracks. We did the 200m and 400m races, everyone raced in heats before we then had a boys and girls final. It was lovely to see the children supporting and encouraging one another to the finish line. The 3 winners in each final will now earn points for their houses – well done!

In IDL and HWB we focused on friendship and everyone pointed out that this is one of our school values. We learned about friendly/unfriendly behaviour and we all agreed that we preferred the good friend traits. We were all given a challenge to try and make at least one new friend in school or at home and each day the children excitedly told us about their new friends – well done everyone! In our writing we wrote friendship recipes using lots of WOW words – “a sprinkle of happiness”, “100 grams of love”, ” a pinch of fun” and ” 3 cups of kindness”. We also worked with our friends in P1D to make friendship bracelets out in the school garden, this was tricky but good fun! To finish off our friendship week we decided to have Goldentime with P1D at the park, everyone played together nicely showing what good friends they all were, what a lovely way to end the week!

It’s been emotional…

Collage 2016-06-03 19_24_10

We made it to the end of the week, and what a week it has been. It’s the last blog post from camp and we don’t know where to start!

This morning we got off to a slow start and cases had to be packed, this was difficult for some of us but we got there eventually even with Miss Smyth taking left over belongings to breakfast to make sure we got it all! After another good breakfast the teachers gave each child an award…ask your child what their award was for, we certainly chuckled when making them up!!

A few different activities this morning and another shot on the zipslide, some of us even tried to go upside down!

We ate lunch outside and even had a some birthday cake!

We said an emotional goodbye to all the staff at Ford Castle, they really were so kind to all of us and looked after us all so well!

Thanks for a fantastic week!

The children who went to camp were an absolute credit to themselves and to their families. They brought so much fun and enthusiasm each day and made it an absolute pleasure to spend this quality time with them, the staff have laughed so much with the children and created memories that we will continue to laugh about! Thank you all so much 💚💚💛💛

P5 Up date

We have now completed all our class talks linked with our Food Glorious Food topic.  Here are the remaining foods/companies covered,

McDonalds – Reece

Honey – Rachel

KitKat – Mia So

Quaker Oats – Edwin

KFC – Shiv

Irn Bru – Kieran

Mountain Dew – Leon

Coca Cola – Neave

Well done everyone and thank you for your patience, it may have taken longer than expected to listen to all the talks but it was a really worthwhile activity.  Hopefully everyone has been given feedback which will allow them to progress their talking and listening skills further.

In our writing this week we used an audio stimulus to inspire us to develop a scene in our imaginations.  As preparation for this we listened to an orchestral performance of Peter And The Wolf and learned how instruments can be played to represent animals and objects.  From this we then listened to the following composition,

Our imaginations were really fired up by this music and everyone created a very descriptive piece of writing about the imagery the music inspired in them.  Parents please have a listen and you can share your inspired scene with your child.  You can also post a comment back with your description of a scene and we can share these with the class during our follow up lesson next week.

In maths, we have continued to work with money and creating a shopping list/receipt for each other to work out.  Your maths homework task was tricky so well done to everyone.  Here is a link to a money game for you to try out.

We also developed our art skills this week through still life drawing.  We are going to extend this next week so sharpen those pencils!

Have a lovely weekend

Nursery News

Another busy and exciting week has flown by in Nursery. Our Transition programme continued with our pre schoolers getting the opportunity to have a school lunch in the dinner hall alongside our school pupils. They all coped with this new challenge so well and there were plenty of empty plates !

We enjoyed the lovely warm weather and took our learning outside a lot this week. The children used their curiosity and creativity when they made a den out of  material, pegs and bricks and worked really well as a team to complete this.  Our buddies also came along to play with us and we enjoyed showing them all the exciting things we were able to do. Our potatoes are really growing well in the heat and hopefully we can use these when they are finished growing. The children also enjoyed singing and dancing on our stage. What talented children we have! Can we please ask that the children come to Nursery in hot days wearing suntan cream and a hat. Thank you for your help in this.

We had a special visitor in our AM session when Eilidh brought in her pet turtle Sheldon to see us and some children were brave enough to hold him. We were able to think up some interesting questions to ask her about him. Thank you Eilidh.

We continue with our Transition programme next week with our two moving up days . On Tuesday 7th June the children should be brought to the main entrance of the school for 9 o’ clock where you will be taken into the main school hall. The children will be taken down to their new classes and get the chance to meet their new teacher and the other children in their class. There will be a meeting for parents while the children are away where you will be given important information about the school. The children will be brought back to the hall at 11 o’ clock.

On Wednesday 10th June the children should be brought to the infant playground for 9 o’clock where they will line up at coloured cones and the Primary 1 teachers will come out and collect them. The children should then be collected from the cones at 11 o’ clock. As the children will also go out at playtime on both these days they can bring a small snack to eat when out. Please ensure children have suitable clothing depending on the weather.

Transition letters have been issued with all the information for these two days. As usual if you have any worries or questions please don’t hesitate to ask any member of the Nursery team who will be more than happy to answer these for you.

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sunshine if it stays.

The Nursery Team.
