What’s your child’s favourite bedtime story?

A woman reads a story to her child. A recent survey found that a third of parents never read a bedtime story to their children.

In our November newsletter I shared an article from The Guardian newspaper which outlined research around bedtime stories being key to developing a love of reading in children and key to their literacy progress. The article can be found at http://gu.com/p/4cjj3/sbl .

I absolutely love that special time in the evening with my little girl when we read (and re-read) her favourite bedtime stories. It’s great to see her so positive about books at such an early age and I love when she ‘reads’ the story back to me! Her favourite story just now is Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson. Have you read it? It’s a really catchy story with beautiful illustrations and a wonderful ending.

What’s your child’s favourite story? I’d love to hear all about it!

  1. Far too many in this house!! How will we choose?! Mummy’s favourite is The Gruffalo – or The Gruffalo in Scots(or any of Julia Donaldsons offerings)! Orla’s changes.. We have enjoyed Fantastic Mr Fox – Roald Dahl & she loves her Jolly Postman books! Lucy (aged 1) prefers ‘My Presents’ by Rod Campbell 🙂 reading is a big thing for the Conway girls – ️maybe because granny works in the local library?! Looking forward to seeing what everyone else likes too 🙂

  2. My boys love Mr Men books…all of them. Most recently they have asked about chapter book – wasn’t sure at start as they are 5 and 7 years of age but I think they are ready.

Having bed time story routine is very important – I noticed boys enjoy books more and more.

  3. Although my daughters are 21 and 17, they still talk about stories they loved as children ,especially at bedtime…..The Gruffalo,My naughty little sister,Dr Seuss the list could go on and on, such special memories of such a special time, reading a bedtime story ,and I’m going to buy paper dolls because I know (even at their age) they’ll love it!!!x

  4. We also love a bedtime story! Beth and mum are enjoying reading Matilda together at the moment. Some favourites of the boys are, I love you blue kangaroo, Elmer and the lost teddy and A new home for a pirate. The list could go on and on!
