Murrayfield Nursery Class

This week the children have continued to explore the farm topic and use non-fiction books to select information about farms. They have enjoyed playing with the new play cooker we purchased for the playdough table and new duplo related to farms. The beautiful weather allowed the children to play for a longer period of time in the garden and they were helping to dig around the plants as well as taking some of the activities that they enjoy indoors outside like the doll house and books.

It was great to see all the children after their Easter holidays and hear their stories. This week has been a busy one. The children had the opportunity to plant their own seeds and learn what plants need to grow. The children in the morning were interested in painting their hands so they have been making handprints. The afternoon were measuring their feet so made their own feet paintings. The hands and feet will be displayed as a graph in the nursery which will allow the children to learn about data handling. The bricks and lego have been particularly popular this week, along with the junk modelling. Next week we will continue to look at farms and changes to the environment due to spring.

It has been another busy week in the nursery. This week we began learning about Spring and had a signs of Spring hunt in the nursery garden. At the art table we made spring chickens and at the writing table the children were practising their writing skills writing shopping lists. In the construction area the children were building dens using a large piece of cloth. The morning children were practising their jumping and were measuring how far they could jump, they used their bodies to measure the distance they had jumped. The afternoon children turned the construction area into a castle for princesses, they had guards for the castle and a throne, some of the children drew a castle plan which is displayed on the wall. On Thursday afternoon and today the children participated in the jammie jog which they did with the P6 pupils. Everyone very much enjoyed wearing their jammies and onsies to nursery.

This week in the nursery we have been finding out about flight and wands. At the art table the children made magic wands and decorated airplanes. The children tested different types of paper  airplanes to see which one was the fastest. We discovered that the jet plane was the fastest. The children in the morning enjoyed building their own airplane using the large wooden blocks and the afternoon children have been using the number titles to play games.

It has been a busy week in nursery this week. The children have had lots of fun playing in the house corner that was changed into the three bears cottage and listening to the story of the gingerbread man. The children continue to enjoy playing outside on the newly painted road and have been enjoying the sunshine. On Thursday we had our mini masterclass day. Thank you to all the parents and family members who helped the children to put their name on book they wanted to find out about. The choices for the children were ” Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp” by Carol Diggory Shields , “The Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle, “Aliens Love Underpants” by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort and “Shh! We have a Plan” by Chris Haughton. For the last hour of the day the children listened to their chosen story and completed some activities based on the book. The children and staff really enjoyed Mini Masterclass day. Below are some photos of our day.

The children have been finding out about Goldilocks and the three bears this week which has allowed them to experience measuring and comparing sizes. On Thursday afternoon and Friday morning we also had a visit from NYCoS (National Youth Choir of Scotland). The instructor introduced us to some songs and actions which the children enjoyed. All of the children have enjoyed playing on the new painted road in the nursery garden, especially going around the roundabout.

This week the children have been enjoying building at the investigation table with the theme of the three little pigs. The stories and art activities have been themed around this too. The traditional tale character costumes have been very popular and the children have been acting out the stories using the props provided. Next week we will continue to look at traditional tales but move on to the goldilocks and the three bears story.

This week has been another busy week in the nursery. A big well done to the morning nursery boys and girls who did a great job presenting their assembly this morning. During group time this week the children were asked to draw a picture of a character from the “Gruffalo in Scots” book. Look out for them appearing on our writing wall. The children had an opportunity to play with the BeeBot robot and learn some positional language.  Next week we move on to look at Chinese New Year and transport.
