Homework Challenge P6, P7/6, P7

MuppetHomework Challenge.doc

19th November 2015

Parent/Carer

This year’s Christmas show will involve all classes across the school.  P6, P7/6 and P7 have decided to use ‘The Muppet’s Christmas Carol’ as a focus for our section of the show.

In preparation the children have been set a homework challenge to design and make a muppet mask.  The masks can be based on one of the muppets from the film or they can be something they design themselves.

If the children need any help with resources to make their masks then we will do our best to supply what they need.

Some ideas for the masks are available at:

 Things to consider:

  • The children need the mouth of the mask to be open so we can hear them speak/sing
  • The children will need to be able to see where they are going

The masks must be completed and brought into school by Monday 2nd December.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support with this challenge and look forward to seeing the children’s creations!

A copy of this letter is on the school blog should you misplace this copy.

Yours faithfully

P7/6 Homework

Good evening

Homework

You may have noticed a change in the homework being set for your children.

Miss Moir (P6), Mrs Anderson (P7) and I agreed that in order to prepare the children as best we can for the jump in the level of homework set in S1 and beyond we had to re-vamp our upper school homework expectations.

Each Monday the children will be set spelling homework, a numeracy challenge and a reading comprehension challenge. This homework has to be handed in on the Thursday.

Additionally each Wednesday the children will be set reading plus a Literacy Circle task. This has to be completed by the coming Monday.

Homework is an integral part of your child’s learning as it enhances and consolidates what we they are learning in class.

Homework club is held every Wednesday lunchtime and is open to all children.

Thank you for your continued support.

Should you ever wish to speak with me regarding any aspect of your child’s education/school life please do not hesitate to call the school to arrange a meeting/phone call.

Hope you all have a lovely cosy evening!

Christmas Show – P6, P7/6 and P7

For our section in this year’s Christmas show our class, P6, P7/6 and P7 have decided to focus on The Muppets Christmas Carol. With this in mind the children from all three classes have been set a homework challenge to make a muppet mask!

Full details will be confirmed in a letter tomorrow.

Miss Moir, Mrs Anderson and I are all really excited to see the children’s creations! 🙂 🙂

P7/6

We have had a busy week in P7/6.

IDL/Topic

On Monday we started our new topic on Rainforest.   In pairs the children were researching information on ‘Layers of the Rainforest’ and where about in the world rainforests are located.  Information found was written in their individual fact files.  The children were using ICT and reference books.  A whole class trip has been planned for early January that will finish off our rainforest topic; further details will be given after the Christmas break.

Numeracy

In numeracy we have been consolidating our knowledge and understanding of fractions and decimals.  Next week we will begin to link this knowledge to percentages.  We will be using our enterprise challenge to develop our understanding of money.  Through the budgeting and planning of our enterprise challenge and our topic we will be enhancing our knowledge of data handling.

Literacy

In literacy we have all been given a new reading book.  Literacy circle homework is now in place to enhance and develop the children’s comprehension of their reading.  Each reading group will be given the responsibility of allocating rewards and sanctions for effort in homework.  Mrs Harrison will be focusing on reading comprehension via reading routes.

HWB

The children were given a challenge of designing and creating an eye catching and informative poster.  The posters were based on their HWB topics of Dangers of Tobacco (P6) and Substance and Alcohol Misuse (P7).  The posters will be used as an assessment piece for their literacy.

PE

We are hosting some PE students from WLC – for the next 3 weeks the children will be getting an extra hour of PE.  Can I remind parents that PE kit is a part of the school uniform.  As we move into winter it is still our intention to have an hour of outdoor PE (weather permitting).  Outdoor PE is on a Monday, can I please ask that you ensure that your child has appropriate clothing for outside.  Thanks. 🙂

Transition

Our P7s began their journey onto secondary education.  On Wednesday and Thursday all of our P7s had their first transition visit to Bathgate Academy.  They had a fabulous time.  They had a treasure hunt around the school and even had a chance to meet a few of the teachers.  Every single one of the children should be exceptionally proud of the way they behaved.  They did themselves and Murrayfield PS extremely proud!  Well done guys!

Enterprise Challenge

Ms McCrae has given each class a challenge to ‘Make Your Money Grow’!  This challenge will run over the whole academic year.  We have decided that our first enterprise activity will be to design and hand make Christmas cards.  These will be sold in packs of 5 for £1.oo.  A pre-order form will be sent out next week.  Our plan is to raise as much money as we can over the year to put towards an end of year class trip!

Vertical Groups

This week each teacher gave their first lesson on their element of the GIRFEC health and well being indicators.  Bruce 3 worked really well together learning about Nurture.  In groups, the children were given a variety of nurturing statements which they had to discuss and put in order that they see as most important.  The statements included nurturing within the home and within school.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

See you on Monday.

P7/6

We have had a very busy week at school while some of our classmates have been away at camp.  We have had a variety of exciting activities across all three of the upper school classes.

PE

We were lucky to have Mr Young from Active Schools visit us on Monday to teach the children basketball skills.  We also had a mini benchball tournament with Miss Moir’s P6 class on Wednesday.  We also had a ‘Go-Noodle’ session in the hall which the children all loved!

Art and Health & Wellbeing

On Tuesday afternoon all three of the upper school teachers hosted an art masterclass.  The three artists were Warhol, Lowrey and Seurat.  My artist was George Seurat and our focus was his pointellist piece of the Eiffel Tower.  Miss Moir, Mrs Anderson and I were all super impressed with the effort and enthusiasm shown by every one of the children.  Ms McCrae was also extremely impressed and a whopping 8 Head Teacher awards were given!  Well done to everyone who received an award.  I will post some pictures of the final results on Monday!

Unfortunately due to the weather first thing on Wednesday morning we didn’t manage to do our planned walk to Seafield.  However after break, we pulled on our boots, wrapped up and walked to the Peat Moss.  Along the way we collected a variety of natural materials that the Autumn season brings, including leaves, sticks and the ocassional splash of vibrant colour.  When we got back to class the children used their ICT skills to research what trees the leaves had fallen from.  The children then created a variety of fantastic pieces of art!

IMG_0274 IMG_0273 IMG_0275 IMG_0280 IMG_0286 IMG_0293 IMG_0296 IMG_0294 IMG_0291

We also had an upper school movie session 🙂  The children opted for ‘Home’ … Fantastic choice! And we had lots of giggles watching it.

House Captains

House Captains and Vice Captains had their first meeting with Ms McCrae and Mrs Bruce on Thursday.  They have been planning roles and responsibilities for the coming months.  I wish them lots of luck as they take on their extremely important and influential roles.  🙂 🙂

Enterprise

As you may already be aware, Ms McCrae introduced a new whole school initiative this academic year.  ‘Grow your Money’ is an enterprise opportunity for each class to raise funds that can be spent on their own class.  Every class has been allocated £10.00.  The aim is to start small, build profit allowing you to grow your £10.oo into something much bigger, with all profits benefiting your own class!

We are proposing that our first enterprise activity is going to be designing, hand-making and selling Christmas cards.  We thought packs of 5 for £1.oo.  If Ms McCrae approves our suggestion these will be available to staff, parents and carers to pre-order.

Transition: P7 pupils only

Next week our P7s begin their journey onto the next stage of their education.  All p7s will be visiting Bathgate Academy for a half-day of exciting activities.  On Monday (9th) I will be accompanying some of the children with Mrs Anderson accompanying the others on Wednesday (11th).  It is extremely important that we receive your signed authorisation and completed EE2 forms prior to your child’s visit.

I look forward to hearing all about the children’s adventures at camp and allowing the children to share their learning and experiences with each other from the past week.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!  Remember, be sensible and stay safe if you are attending any firework displays!

Miss Preston xx
