Sense of Touch

This afternoon in P2/1 we were exploring our sense of touch.  We have already had the opportunity to feel different textures with our hands to see if the were rough, smooth, hard, soft or bumpy.

So today we were finding out if we could sense a touch without using our fingertips.  We discovered that he can feel a touch on different parts of our bodies.  We learned that some body parts are more sensitive than others.

You can find out more about our learning later on this week.

P2/1 visit the Science Museum in Glasgow.

On Monday we went to the Science Museum in Glasgow.  We were all very excited and our journey began as soon as we got on the bus.  We saw lots of different things as we travelled to Glasgow.  When we were almost there we saw the Glasgow Armadillo, the Hydro (which we thought looked like a giant space ship) and the River Clyde.

Once inside the Science Museum we went to a workshop all about the senses.  We had to use of noses to smell different scents and see if we could name them.  We liked the chocolate smell the best!  We used our sense of touch to find out (without looking) what was in the box.  Granny used her ears to listen carefully as we tried to sneak up on her!  We had to use our eyes to look to see where the animals in Granny’s house were hiding and then we had to identify which ones disappeared!

After lunch it was time to explore!

We had a fantastic day and saw lots of amazing things!

Have a super long weekend.  See you all on Tuesday.

3D shape in P2/1

A few weeks ago in P2/1, we were learning about 3D shapes.  We took part in various activities such as looking for the shapes around the classroom, investigating as to whether the shapes rolled, stacked or both and also sorting real life objects into which shape they were.  Then we were set a 3D maths challenge.  We had to build a model from recycled materials such as cardboard tubes, cereal boxes etc BUT they had to include some of the 3D shapes that we had been learning about.  We brought them in to school this week and spoke about them.  They were so good that we invited Mrs Bruce to our class to have a look.  Mrs Mackie thought they were all fantastic and we wanted to share them with you all. Have a look at the amazing models we made….

Well done to everyone for all of their hard work!

Have a fantastic weekend.

What’s that noise?!

This week in P2/1 we have been learning about the sense of hearing.  We had a listening walk around the school and drew the things we could hear.  We played a guessing game where we had to listen to different sounds and identify them.  Some were quite tricky. We also experimented with different instruments to find out if they made a quiet noise or a LOUD noise!

We use our ears to listen. – Ruby

We have to listen carefully to sounds. – Harris

Our ears have three bit.  The outer ear, the middle ear and the inside ear. – Adam

Soundwaves go into our ears and our ears send a message to our brain. – Cooper

We experimented with tuning forks and watched what happened to water when a tuning fork touched it.

The water exploded! – Kian

It splashed up.  – Lucy

We learned that vibrations cause soundwaves which make noise.

We also learned that people who can’t hear are deaf.  They communicate using hand signals called sign language.  We watched Mr Tumble and found out about loud and quiet noises.  He used sign language to talk to people.

Next week we will be using our noses to learn about the sense of smell!

Have a good weekend!

I spy with my little eye….

At the beginning of the week we were learning all about the parts of our eyes.

We have been using our eyes a lot this week and have been taking part in activities where we didn’t use our eyes.  We found out that not having our sight can be tricky BUT we were surprised by how well we could still manage to do things.

We drew a picture with our eyes open and then we had to draw the same picture with our eyes shut tight.

Then decide which  one we found to be more challenging!  Can you guess from our drawings?

We also had to guide our partner through an obstacle course when they were blindfolded!  That was really challenging as we had to give clear instructions to get them through safely!

As well as learning about our senses this week we managed to get outside for Outdoor Gym!  It was a bit windy and some of our equipment blew away but we stuck with it and had fun!

We also had a visit from the Nursery children.  We read Ten Little Monsters and made a mummy!

Eye, eye!

In P2/1 we have started learning about our senses.  This week we are finding out all about our sense of sight.  We learned that we use of eyes to see and that our eyes send messages to our brains.

We used mirrors to look at the different parts of our eyes.

Skyla – The iris is the coloured bit of our eyes.

Aaron – The black circle in the middle is the pupil.  If you shine a light in your eyes it gets smaller.  It protects your eyes from the bright light.

Can you see what colour of iris these children have?

We learned about the job that our eyelids and eyelashes do.

Kayleigh – They protect our eyeballs from dust.

Adam – It helps to keep our eyes clean.

Some people in our class had longer eyelashes than others!

We decided that Calvin had the longest eyelashes!

We watched a video clip to find out how our eyes work and then we draw a picture of one of our own eyes in our books and labelled it.

We will be learning more about the sense of sight tomorrow…..

P2/1 Learning outdoors!

Lots of learning took place this week in P2/1.

One of the things we enjoyed most was our outdoor learning activity.

We took the opportunity on Monday (while the weather was dry) to get out and do some Outdoor Learning.  We were revising what we could remember about length (long and short). We collected lots of twigs and sticks of different lengths and then compared them.  Then we had to decide which one was the longest and which was the shortest.  Once we had done that we had to sort all of the other sticks in order of length.  We had to label our display so that others would understand what we were learning about.

Learning in P2/1

We have had a very busy but enjoyable week in P2/1.

On Monday we worked in a team with P6 to do a litter pick.  We used litter pickers to clean up all of the rubbish that we found.  It was hard work but we did a super job!

Thank you to the mum’s (and little sister) who came along to help us.

In our numeracy activities we have been learning about Fact Families.  We have to remember that the biggest number comes at the end of an addition problem and at the start of a subtraction problem.

We have also been learning the names for each number.  We are using our reading skills to help us and if we get stuck we can check by looking at the number line on the wall.

Another thing we have been doing this week is doubling numbers.  We have been using mirrors to see what happens to the dots on a die when we double them and playing games to help us learn them.

Today we went to the church for our Easter service and then we hunted for Easter eggs in our classroom!

Have a good Easter holiday every one!

See you all after the holiday ready for more learning!

P2/1 Learning

This week in P2/1 we were learning about how things work.  We had a to decide if they worked using batteries or electricity from the sockets.

We went for a walk around the school to find out about the different things.

A clock works using batteries. – Kayleigh

A mobile phone has a battery  but we have to plug it in to charge it. – Harris

Computers are plugged in to the wall with wires. – Kian

A kettle is plugged in. – David

In Mr Wilson’s wee room there was a fridge and that is plugged in to the wall. -Rhys

The remote control for the Smart Board works with batteries. – Ruby

The photocopier had a plug so it gets it’s electricity from the socket. – Cooper

We also did some World Book Day activities on Monday.  We listened to the story of Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam.   Then we watched the illustrator draw Sam and we copied him.  You can see some of our work below.  All the other pictures will be displayed on the wall outside of our classroom so you will be able to see them at Parent Consultations.

We have also been keeping ourselves healthy by joining in with some Go Noodle activities to raise our heart rates, followed by some  yoga to cool ourselves down and stretch out our muscles!

Have a good weekend everyone!
