Blackburn Gala – School Relay Races

Congratulations to both our relay teams for their fantastic efforts on Sunday 4th June.  The girls’ team were just pipped at the post and came in a fantastic second place, whilst our boys’ team had a triumphant win and got to bring home a trophy and gala shield.  All the children represented the school well and we are very proud of you all.  Great attitude, support and spirit between the teams, congratulations from us all!

Blackburn Gala Day

As you will be aware Blackburn Gala Day is fast approaching.  The theme this year is ‘Witches and Wizards’ and our school float will be based on ‘The Wizard of Oz.’

Please come along dressed as your favourite witch, wizard or character from The Wizard of Oz’ to help celebrate and create a fantastic atmosphere during the procession.  We hope that you are able to join us and walk with the school in the procession.

There will be room on the float for some nursery children and their accompanying adults.  These spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and if you wish your child to have a seat on the float please make your way to the float immediately after the crowning ceremony.

Please see letters issued from school/ nursery for more details.  (a.m nursery pupil’s letters will be issued tomorrow morning)

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

P6 and P7 Residential Trip – Dounans Activity Centre (March 2018)

A little reminder that we are having a short meeting tomorrow at 3.30pm for parents/ carers of children who will be attending next year’s residential trip to Dounans Activity Centre.  This is an informal meeting to hear a little more about Dounans, the types of activities your children will be able to experience and to ask any questions you may have.

Don’t worry if you are not available at this time as there will other opportunities to discuss this information and to share any questions or queries you have.

Another busy week for P3G

Hi All,

Last week was another busy time for P3G and a highlight for everyone was taking part in the taster skateboarding sessions.  Everyone had a great time watching, learning and participating in this event and the children demonstrated a real talent/ determination when taking part.  Photographs to follow shortly!

We have been continuing to learn about the Romans and were researching what the soldiers in the Roman army wore and how these items helped to protect them in battle.  We have drawn our own soldiers, labelled soldiers clothing and made large classroom displays for this topic.  We will be looking at timelines next week and learning about when things took place within this period of history.

Numeracy and Mathematics:

P3G all got our logins for Education City and the class are really enjoying using this great resource to support their learning and help develop their knowledge and understanding of key concepts.  Several of the children have managed to log into this site at home and have been able to access the games sent home as homework.  However, we have been made aware of an issue relating to the site closing down for home use at 4.30pm.  We are looking into this issue and are hoping to be able to extend the period of time that children can access the site in the evening.

Overdue update from P3G

Hello from P3G,

Here’s a little update about some of the learning that has been taking place and some of the new areas we will be working on this term.

enterprise

Enterprise: Make it Grow

As part of our financial education, the classes have been challenged to design an enterprise project under the heading ‘Make it Grow.’ The challenge is to be able to make our starter loan of £10 grow into a profit. This week, P3G have been busy generating ideas for our project and will be carrying out further research regarding pricing, resourcing and purchasing items. We need to be able to get our project off the ground using this initial £10 only and are required to keep an ongoing financial record of our costings. What a great way to put all our learning about money into good use!!! We will keep you updated on the progress of our enterprise project.

money

Mathematics: Money

We have been continuing to learn about money and have been familiarising ourselves with coins from 1p – £2. We have been working with a range of coins and developing our knowledge of the symbols £ and p. We have also been investigating different combinations of coins and money equivalences, e.g. 2x 50p coins is equal to £1.

We are continuing to look at addition and subtraction strategies to help with calculating total costs and correct change required, from a given amount, in problem solving.

Remember, you can support your child by exploring coins at home together, e.g. look at their values, sort out different ways of making the same amounts, ordering from lowest to largest values etc.

Here are links for games that will help support you and your child at home:

http://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/toy-shop-money

Instructions:

  • Select ‘Mixed Coins’
  • Then select from the column that is headed ‘Exact Money’
  • Start by selecting the ‘Up to 20p’ box. If your child appears confident with this, then they can challenge themselves and move onto the next box ‘Up to £1’

Instructions:

This link should take you straight to the correct game and level. Follow the instructions on the screen and work through the 20 examples together, helping your child to combine totals where necessary.

oclock

Mathematics Future Focus: Time

In the next couple of weeks, we will be learning about time and will have opportunities to make and read hours (o’clock) and half hours on a variety of clock faces. Although we will start by looking at analogue clock faces, we have noticed that some of the boys and girls are wearing lovely watches, lots of which are digital, so we will take the opportunity to look at this too!

Numeracy: Additional Support Parents Can Offer

Remember you can help and support your child‘s understanding of addition and subtraction processes by encouraging them to practice counting forwards and backwards from any given number, e.g. can you count backwards from 43, until I tell you to stop. It would also be helpful to work on ‘number before’ and ‘number after’ a given number, e.g. what is the number that comes before before 50.

Literacy: Writing

This term we will be using our imagination for creative writing and will be learning about writing beginnings, middle and endings. We will be using our knowledge of VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation) to up-level and improve our writing. We have already started to look at this and have been using story strings to create interesting stories. Look out for our Big Talk homework which will help support us with this writing focus.
