P4b had a very exciting day yesterday learning all about food, restaurants and cooking. In the morning we went to visit the ‘Fork and Field’ Restaurant in Mid Calder, it was brilliant! We were given a tour around the restaurant, shown how orders are made and sent to the chef and we were also able to pretend we were waiters and waitresses serving food and drink to customers. It was a super experience and cant wait to tell everyone about all the information we found out.
In the afternoon, Jennifer Robertson from Quality Meat Scotland came into class to talk to us about the importance of local farms and meat. Jennifer also taught us how to prepare healthy beef fajitas, filled with homemade guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes and peppers, YUMMY!

P4b’s Persuasive Posters!
LI: We are learning to use text and colour techniques to represent ideas.
SC: A successful poster will include:
* Picture of the product
* Price
* Slogan
* Persuasive techniques
* Include key information from the text
In class we have been learning all about advertising and persuasive techniques. As part of our IDL Dragon’s Den challenge we have been working in groups to plan and design an advert poster for our own marvellous medicines.
Once we finished our plans we then used the Netbooks to recreate our posters on Microsoft Word then printed them out. It was really interesting learning new computer skills!
P4b – Marvellous Freeze Frames
LI: We are learning to create a freeze frame of a key moment in the text.
SC: I can work with others.
I can consider body language, facial expressions and use of props.
I can perform my drama to others and accept and provide constructive feedback.
In P4b this week we have been using drama to further develop our understanding of George’s Marvellous Medicine IDL Context. In groups, we were given a key moment from the text and asked to create a freeze frame/still image to represent this. We had to consider: body language, facial expressions and use of props (imaginative and physical). Once we had prepared our freeze frames, our classmates then had to use the freeze frame to guess which part of the text is being represented.
P4b’s Marvellous Character Descriptions
Learning Intention: We are learning about the key features of a character description.
Success Criteria:
– I can discuss the key features of character descriptions and can highlight these on given examples.
– I understand what a simile is, can give an example and highlight a simile in a piece of text.
– I can plan a character description for George/Granny from George’s Marvellous Medicine using ambitious vocabulary and similes.
P4 have started their novel based IDL Topic on Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine this week. In writing, we have been looking closely at character descriptions and what key information authors include in their stories to help us build up a picture of the characters in our imagination. We worked in pairs to highlight key character information from different pieces of text and then used this to help us plan our own individual character description of George or Granny.
P4b Class Community Contract
In P4b we have been looking at the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as part of our Community Building fortnight.
As a class, we worked together to select 6 key articles that we felt were most important to us and then worked in groups to decide how pupils and teachers would respect these rights. This helped us create our class charter/ rules which we have all agreed to follow.
Staying Safe Online
On Thursday, as part of internet safety week, P4 took part in activities about staying safe on the internet. We looked at the types of messages that can be sent to people online and got into groups to discuss how they made us feel. Our feelings ranged from curious to angry.
We watched some films that showed how photographs we put up online can get used by different people and we learnt how to block people we don’t know and how to report things we weren’t sure about.
Finally we got into our house groups and made posters about how to stay safe online.
We know lots of tips about staying safe, ask us for our advice!
