Marvellous Advertising Posters

Learning Intention: We are learning to use persuasive techniques to create a poster advertisement.

Success Criteria:
A successful poster will include:
– A picture of the product
– The price
– A slogan
– Persuasive techniques
– Key information from the text

In P5B, we have been learning about persuasive language and techniques that advertising experts use to sell products. We used this to help us to create poster advertisements for our redesigned versions of George’s Marvellous Medicine as part of our Dragons’ Den challenge.

We were allowed to select which ICT software we thought would suit our task the best, then set to work creating our posters. We had to make sure that we used as many persuasive techniques as possible to sell our product to our customers.

When we thought we had met all of the success criteria, we posted our posters onto our Yammer page, then gave our peers two stars and a wish feedback.

We used our feedback to make changes to our poster to ensure that our final product met the criteria, and was as clear and as persuasive as we could make it.

We think you’ll agree that our final designs are very persuasive. Would you buy our ‘marvellous medicines?’

Author Visit

As part of our focus on reading this session, today P1, P5 and P7 had an inspirational talk from the author, Emma Mooney. She shared where some of her ideas for writing come from, really making us think about how a simple idea can be transformed into the beginning of a whole novel. We learned about the importance of an interesting and engaging first line of a story, and were challenge to try and recognise different novels from the first sentence of the book.

When asked what advice she would given aspiring authors, Emma shared that it is extremely important to have people around you who believe in you, and to stick to the ‘not yet’ plan by not giving up, even when things get tough. We thought that this was great advice for everyone, not just those who want to become authors.

Thank you to Emma for such an encouraging and motivating talk.

Advertising Expert

Today the Primary 4s and 5s had a very special visit from Martha Tod, an advertising expert, who gave us a fantastic insight into the world of adverts. As part of our IDL context, George’s Marvellous Medicine, we have been given the challenge to try and sell the idea of George’s medicine to the Dragons’ Den. As part of this challenge, we have been asked to create a company name and logo, an advertising poster and new packaging for the product.

Martha explained to us about the importance of advertising, as well as what kind of jobs someone who works in advertising would be asked to do. We looked at what makes a good logo and were challenged to search for hidden meanings and objects in some well known logos. We also learned about the importance of colour in advertisements and logos, exploring how different colours make us feel and what they represent. For example, did you know that black gives a sense of power and mystery, while purple suggests royalty, luxury and wisdom?

Thank you to Martha for giving us such great hints and tips to help us with our challenge. We have a lot to think about now!

Mid Calder Reading Challenge

To celebrate Book Week Scotland,  MCPS were set a reading challenge- to take a photo of ourselves reading for pleasure in an unusual place. We were inundated with weird and wonderful pictures of some very unusual places, and it looks like everyone had lots of fun taking part in the challenge. A big well done to all those who tweeted us their photos, or brought them into school on paper or on their own device.

Even some of the staff got involved…

P5B’s Booktastic Assembly

On Friday, P5B presented our love of books and reading in our class assembly. We also shared the reading skills we have been developing through our IDL context for learning, George’s Marvellous Medicine.

Questioning:

We have been learning to ask and answer a range of questions about a text. We looked at what makes a quality question and know that it has to make someone think hard about a text. We wrote a set of questions about the first two chapters of the book, then tested our partners on them.

Predicting:

We have been learning to use clues from a text to make realistic predictions. We used these skills to write chapter 7 of George’s Marvellous Medicine, which we then shared with our Grandparents at our Novel Natters session.

Visualising:

We have been learning to use key words and phrases from a text to create images in our mind. This week, we had to select the words and phrases that the author uses when he described what happened when Grandma took the medicine and discuss how these stimulated our senses and helped us to visualise the scene.

Book Week Scotland

Here are some of the ways we celebrated Book Week Scotland:

West Lothian’s Digilearn Event

On Friday, Mid Calder Primary School were invited along to West Lothian’s Digilearn Event to share our journey to becoming an AAL and Bring Your Own Device school. As they were part of our Technical Troopers and Pupil Council Junior Leadership Teams during the key stages of this journey, Calum, Ben, Grace and Kirsty joined Miss Burton and Miss Sherlow to present to Head Teachers, teachers and a range of other practitioners from across West Lothian.

They did a fantastic job in sharing the ongoing process that MCPS are going through in our engagement with AAL and BYOD, and received lots of lovely feedback about about how professional and inspiring they were when presenting. Well done Calum, Ben, Grace and Kirsty!

YamJam

This year, Primary 5B have been using Yammer to share their learning through their IDL contexts, George’s Marvellous Medicine and the Romans. We use Yammer to access useful websites, contribute our thoughts and ideas and to share new facts we have learned.

Today, we took part in a live YamJam session where we had the opportunity to ask questions about Yammer to some of the administrators of the Glow Yammer Network. We asked some thoughtful questions, and were able to answer other people’s questions as well.

Novel Natters with Nana and Papa

Yesterday, Primary 4 and 5 invited our Nanas, Papas and relatives of the older generation into school to join us for a Novel Natters session. We read a piece of our own writing linked to our IDL context for learning, George’s Marvellous Medicine. We had been asked to use our prediction skills to write chapter 7 of the book, using clues from the text and our knowledge of the author’s style to help us to make a realistic continuation of the story.

Our Grandparents gave us ‘Nana’s Notions and Papa’s Praise’ feedback, sharing what they thought we had done well in our prediction, what their favourite part was and ideas of how we could have made our piece even better. They even gave us a star rating.

We absolutely loved our Novel Natters session, so a big thank you to all those who attended. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

West Lothian Sumdog Maths Competition

This week, some of our classes took part in a maths competition on Sumdog, competing against other school across West Lothian. Mid Calder Primary School has a history of doing very well in Sumdog contests, and this one was no exception.

Primary 4B were the overall winners for the whole of West Lothian, with Primary 5B coming in 2nd place. P4B will have will have a photocall in a local paper, with a Local Authority representative and a member of the Sumdog Team.
