Last week of P3 in Term 1

Wow! What a quick first term in P3.  We have had such a lovely time settling into our new class, meeting new friends and learning lots of new things.

This week we continued to develop our understanding of adjectives by going for a walk around the school and thinking of words that could be used to describe the leaves on the tress and how it felt outside.  We then completed a beautiful piece of descriptive writing about our walk.  We also looked at verbs with Mrs Clayton, and wrote gorgeous poem.

We have been continuing to develop our knowledge and understanding of number.  We have been doing very well and our confidence is definitely increasing.

Here are some our highlights:-

Thomas “my favourite activity this week was when we did yoga in the classroom”

Lennon “I liked counting forwards and backwards from numbers to 1000”

Harry “My favourite thing this week was doing the tricky sums in maths”

Emily “I liked counting up in 10s in Maths”

Billy “I liked looking at shape with Mrs Clayton”

Chloe “My favourite activity this week was practising the Harvest songs for assembly”

Ashley “I enjoyed going on the Autumn walk”

Here is a little snippet of what we are looking forward to next term

Kai “I am looking forward to the challenge in harder maths questions”

It was lovely getting to meet you all at parents nights and hope everyone has a wonderful week off! 🙂

Update – end of first term for Primary 1

It has been a busy  and exciting week.  Loads of things have happened.

In maths we have been learning about adding one more to the numbers between 0 and 5.  We have been working hard on all our sounds as well as learning a new sound ‘o’.  We made lovely octopuses this week as it began with o.

We have been discussing our emotions especially anger this week and what makes us angry.  In outdoor learning we made lovely pictures of hedgehogs made from leave which we all enjoyed a lot.

The most exciting part of our week was getting visits from the firefighters and the policemen.  We loved learning all about the people who help us and what they do

Have a fantastic October holiday and see you all back on the 24th October. 🙂

Visitor

Primary 1 have just had a lovely visitor in school to tell us what they do to help us.  This was very exciting as they got to hold the handcuffs, baton and wear the hat.  Also they got to go and explore the van which meant that they got to go in the back where the police lock people in.

Lillie and Lyall said “I really liked the siren.  It was my favourite part”

A week in P7/6

Monday

On Monday we were introduced to a new reading activity called Blankety Blank. We had to think of words to fill in the gaps in the story and it had to make sense. With Mr Robertson we finished off our Knex activity which was to build a fairground ride.

Tuesday

On Tuesday morning Primary 7 held their JustDanceathon which they had to raise initial funds for their Enterprise project. Primary 6 also joined in and had fun with this activity. We also made predictions about our volcanoes erupting and had fun making chemical reactions.

Wednesday
Gist came into school to teach us about Child Road Safety. We learned about road signs, the green cross code and lots of interesting facts. We also learned that lorry drivers cannot see in front of their lorries, you have to be quite far away before they would see you. We were excited to sit in the lorry and see the fridge and the bunkbeds.
Lots of people presented to the class about their chosen habitat or climate change – lots of effort had went into this.

Thursday
We spent the day travelling through time at Dynamic Earth. This let us consolidate our learning about different habitats and parts of the Earth. We all had a great time!

Fire Engine

A very exciting day for the Primary 1 today.  We had special visitors…  two fire men and their fire engine.  we all loved it and thought it was fantastic.  We were allowed a shot of the big water hose and got to sit inside the fire engine.  We also heard the siren and learnt all about what they should not touch because it is hot as well as about fires.  We all had to do the Stop, Drop and Roll manoeuvre which we learnt to say if there was someone on fire.  We had great fun even chose Miss Brown to dress up in the firefighter’s uniform which she told us was very heavy especially the oxygen tank.   A big thanks to Ryan and Rob, we had a great time learning about what you do and it was fun.

First Minister’s Reading Challenge

Some information about the First Minister’s Reading Challenge which the school are participating in.

First Minister’s Reading Challenge

Dear Parent/Carer,

Our school has signed up to take part in the First Minister’s Reading Challenge, an exciting new reading initiative for children in Primary 1-7, delivered by Scottish Book Trust on behalf of the Scottish Government.

Your child may have a Reading Passport to keep track of their reading journey during the Challenge. There is space for them to fill in their thoughts about a book when they record it in their passport; this could be a few sentences, a picture or they can simply leave it blank and colour in a number of stars to show how much they enjoyed it. They will have the opportunity to create their own reading challenges, as well as taking part with the wider school. You will find information about how you can support your child on the Reading Challenge website, Readingchallenge.scot.

What can we do at home?

Encouraging a love of reading is really important for children, so have a look at the hints and tips on the Reading Challenge website. Little things you can do to support your child include:
• Signing up and visiting the library together
• Discussing your favourite books
• Making time for quiet reading
Scottish Book Trust have also put together some book recommendations to help children start their reading journey. You can search through these together on the website where there are over 300 titles, as well as book lists submitted by from children’s writers,
well-known public figures, learning professionals and more. Children and families are also encouraged to submit their own book lists – you can do so by emailing no more than 10 titles along with a short paragraph about who you are and the theme of your list to readingchallenge@scottishbooktrust.com.
When does the Reading Challenge take place?

The First Minister’s Reading Challenge was officially launched on 4th September 2017. The Challenge will run until May 2018 and there will be a prize giving ceremony for winners of the national prizes in June 2018. We’re excited to be taking part and hope that you can join in the fun too!

The busiest week EVER in P4!

Wow, P4 have had a super busy week – culminating in our class assembly and, after lots of organisation and preparation, our Macmillan Coffee Morning.

This week was mainly spent preparing for these two events.  For our assembly, we had to learn our lines, as well as the words and actions for our song ‘Bake It Off!’.  We also had to sell tickets, take orders for cook books, collect raffle prizes, count money, give change, print and bind cook books, advertise our event and book, as well as keeping accurate records of orders etc- all before the big event of the Macmillan Coffee Morning itself!  Phew!  On Thursday we were excited to see the entries for our Kirkhill Bake Off, and the House Team were excited to judge these!  The morning itself was a huge success – it was a very well attended event with an abundance of cakes.  We enjoyed running a number of stalls to raise extra funds – including our Cakehill Cook Book stall, nail painting, Guess the Teddy’s Birthday, Guess the Sweeties in the Jar, a raffle and a Bottle Flip Challenge.  We are not yet in a position to confirm our total figure, but it looks like a record-breaking amount!  Thank you so much for your support with this.

This week, we also enjoyed learning about the journey of coffee.  We used atlases to locate where in the world coffee is grown – we loved looking through these and finding out how different maps give different information.  We then used the measuring tool on Google Earth to find out how many miles the coffee had to travel before it reached us here in Scotland.  We were able to practise our rounding skills on the number of miles, rounding to the nearest 10 and nearest 100.  We were aware of fair trade and showed a good understanding of what it means to farmers and producers when people choose to buy fair trade products.  One interesting thing we learned this week is that the world’s most expensive coffee is produced in Vietnam.  The beans are fed to an animal called a palm civet, and then collected from their poo before being roasted and ground into coffee to drink.  No-one in P4 (not even Miss Thomson who loves coffee) wanted to give this expensive drink a try!

We enjoyed working collaboratively to create presentations to share our learning.  Some of us chose to use iMovie and some chose to use Book Creator on the iPads.  We love this app!  We are keen to use it again and are certain it will enhance our learning in all curriculum areas.

We still found time to sneak in a futsal taster session with coach Woody this week.  Futsal originates in South America and is very similar to football, though uses a heavier ball and is played indoors.  In futsal, players generally have a lot more touches of the ball making it more exciting for them to play as well as working lots on their control of the ball.  Lots of very famous footballers credit futsal to helping develop their skills – including Messi, Aguero and Ronaldinho.  I think everyone really enjoyed their session!  There will be an after-school futsal club running on Thursdays next term for those keen to develop their game.

Organising our coffee morning has been our main topic this term, but we still have a week of learning left!  We were excited to choose a mini-topic for the remainder of term and we have chosen Animals and Dinosaurs.  We are looking forward to more learning next week!
