We have raised £120.66  to add to our Enterprise pot.

Our cauldron was a huge success and we had 4 winners overall – Tiana, Ryan, Oscar and Morgan.

It was incredibly difficult to judge the pumpkins that were handed in. Miss Sutherland’s personal favourites were the Cheshire cat, Jack Skeleton and Mike from Monsters, Inc!

Our overall winners were Martin from P2, Emily from P3 and Deryn from P5.  James won the P7 entry. congratulations everyone and Happy Halloween!

P1 First Week Back

First week back after the holidays and Primary 1 have been working really hard.

In our sounds we have been practicing all the sounds we have done and starting to blend these to make words.  We used our sound mats to make words like “tap” “man” “pat” “sick”.  In writing this week we wrote about our Halloween costumes and drew detailed pictures.

In Maths we were working on ordering our numbers as well as working out the missing number in a sequence from 0-5.  Also, we continued to work on our measuring skills by using a variety of classroom objects to measure.  We learned that we have to make sure our measuring objects are all the same size, do not overlap and that we measure in a straight line.

We had outdoor learning again this week.  We read the story of Stickman in class and then went out to gather our own sticks and used them to create the letters of the sounds that we have been learning.

Also, this week we have been beginning to practice our assembly for next week.  Our buddies from Primary 7 were down to help us learn words and sing songs. Practicing at home if possible, will be appreciated, this is the link to one of the songs we will be singing.

Our first week in Term 2…

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a lovely holiday!

This week there was excitement in P4 when we came in from lunch and discovered a hot air balloon in our classroom!  The visitor, Passepartout, had a letter explaining he had gone travelling and his balloon had been blown off course – he asked for our help to get around the world in 80 days!  Our first task was to find out the names of the continents and major oceans in the world.  We used globes, atlases and Google Earth to help us do this.  We ‘re looking forward to receiving our next task from Passepartout.

In maths, we have been using the symbols for greater than, less than and equal to.  We all showed a good understanding of this.  We have now moved on to rounding – revising rounding to 10 and extending our understanding to include rounding to the nearest 100.  Why don’t you ask us to explain our strategies when rounding?

In grammar, we learned about adverbs and how they help describe a verb.  We used our learning to improve our writing – using both adjectives and adverbs to make our description of a setting more interesting and exciting.

Here’s what we think of our first week back:

Kara:  I am enjoying our class novel ‘Really Weird Removals.Com’ because it’s quite funny and I like the company RWR.

Lucas:  I enjoyed learning about the countries of the world.  I learned about all the oceans and continents.

Amber:  I am enjoying our topic about the countries.

Nicole:  I am enjoying our topic and I am really enjoying studying about Germany for my Home Learning Project.

Leah:  I am enjoying our topic and our class novel.

Robert:  I have chosen to study China for my Home Learning Project and it is really interesting.

Blair:  I am looking forward to doing more about our project because finding out about Spain and all the other countries is really fun for me.

Piotr:  I am learning about Japan for my Home Learning project and it is really fun finding out the information.

P7/6 – Term 2 Week 1

We all arrived safely back for Term 2 after a relaxing holiday week. This week we have had a safety focus on Bonfire Night and how to keep safe around bonfires and fireworks. We decided as a class that is safest to attend a fireworks display. We were shocked at some of the images of burns and injured people that we saw in the Fire Service’s powerpoint presentation and we are all going to remember to stay safe.

In Literacy this week we were introduced to task maps which accompany particular texts. This week our text was the song ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry. We learned about similes and metaphors and then had to be detectives and find all of the similes and metaphors in the song. There were loads!

In Maths, we have been revisiting recognising and naming 2D and 3D shapes. We were all brilliant at 2D shapes and learned lots about 3D shapes such as recognising different types of prisms. P7s have finished their block of Measurement teaching with the Broxburn Academy staff by being able to understand different units of measurement associated with capacity.

This week we also had our very first rehearsal of our Pantomime ‘Puss in Boots.’ We are busy learning all of the songs and we even got to see Scene 1 acted out on the stage. We all need to work together to pull off a performance in 8 weeks time.

On Friday morning some of us created Halloween Monsters with P2/1. This was a great activity which we helped the P2/1 class with. We helped them sponge paint, cellotape and glue resources. Mrs Weir and Mrs Robertson were impressed with the final results. Some of the P7s also helped Primary 1 learn their lines for their assembly and with their People Who Help Us topic.

We hope you all had a great October break. We are excited to be back and looking forward to another term!

In literacy this term, we are looking at poetry. This week we did a poetry hunt and looked for different types of poetry around the classroom and compared their key features. We looked at acrostic poetry, limericks, shape poems and free flow poems. We had a go at writing a Halloween acrostic poem using lots of  alliteration to make our poem spookier! Here is some that we came up with…

Vanishing vampires                        witches whizzing                 murdering mummies      spooky skeletons                 creepy costumes                           Horrifying Halloween                                  gruesome ghosts                                                                              Halloween horror                 gruesome graveyards          ghostly graveyards

In maths, we have started a block on multiplication and division. We have been reminding ourselves of what multiplication means and how we can draw it or show it. We will be initially focusing on the 3, 4 and 6 times table if you would like to do any practice at home!

Recently in health and wellbeing, we have been exploring what it means to be healthy. We discovered that along with exercise, the kind of food we eat is really important to help us grow and learn. We looked at the food wheel and the sorts of food we should be eating lots of and the sorts we should only have as a treat. To help us try and be healthy in school, we have been set a challenge! To have a junk free food classroom for this term. Each day we will look at what everybody has brought in for a snack and see how healthy we all have been. If we manage to bring in a healthy snack, we will get a sticker on our healthy snack chart. For those get 5 stickers over the course of the week we will have a special treat on Friday. We look forward to seeing if we can be as healthy as possible over the course of this term!

We have also enjoyed doing out Art and Design this week where we looked at Scottish artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his famous style of work. We then had a go of making our own attempts at this style looking at the rose which was very iconic in across a lot of his work.

Highlights of the week…

Blanka – I enjoyed playing games in P.E

Joshua – I liked doing the Halloween acrostic poem

Layla – I enjoyed writing the acrostic poem

Jack – I enjoyed going to Light Club

This term we will continue to be on a Monday and Thursday. Please can you ensure that you child has got a P.E that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor sessions.

Have a great weekend!

P3 update

We have been busy getting settled back into P3 after having a lovely, relaxing week off.  This week in literacy we have been continuing to look at adjectives, thinking of more interesting alternatives to make our writing more interesting.  We have also been learning that a noun is a naming word and is a person, place or a thing.

In maths we have been gaining more and more confidence working with number to 1000, counting forwards and backwards in increments of 1, 2, 10 and 100.  We have also started looking at time.

P3 have been so lucky to be selected to be involved in Roots of Empathy programme, which will be our focus in Health and Wellbeing.  Next week we are so excited to meet the baby who is going to teach us about empathy and to think about how others could be feeling.

This week has been bittersweet for P3 as we had to say good bye to Mrs Clayton who takes us on Thursdays, but we were also so excited to see Mrs McDonnell who will be with us instead.

P3 have been given the big responsibility of fundraising for Children in Need this year and we have started thinking of different ways we could help raise lots of money for such a great cause.  So watch this space for what we have in store! 🙂

Have a great weekend!

P7 Update – Week 9

We have had a busy week getting back into routine in P7.

We started our Halloween Enterprise.  Our Lucky Dip has been very successful and will continue to run until Tuesday 31st October.  We are looking forward to receiving Pumpkin Carving Competition entries on Monday and Tuesday.

In Maths we have been revisiting shape; making sure we know the properties of 2D and 3D shapes before moving on to nets and learning about circles.  In literacy we have been looking at Reflective Reading using song lyrics.  We used inference skills to understand what the song ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry means.

We have started parctising for Puss in Boots.  Some children know their lines very well while others need to make sure we are practising as much as we can.  We are going to start making props and backdrops as well as rehearsing all our scenes.

Thank you to everyone who donated sweets for the PSC today instead of a money donation!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Primary 4 Update

Wow, I can’t believe Term 1 is over already!  We’ve been so busy that it has literally flown past!

We’ve all settled into our new class really well; we have made new friends, tried new activities and learned lots of new things.  We will continue to enjoy our learning next term through our new context for learning ‘Around the World in 80 Days’.

We’ve had an exciting last week of term.  We found out the total raised from our Macmillan Coffee Morning was £831 and we are very proud that our hard work, commitment and effort has helped raise such a tremendous amount of money for such a worthwhile charity.  We also had a visit from Gist, who taught us lots about road safety – including information about road signs, stopping distances and how lorry drivers can’t see us when we are very close to the cab.  We were lucky enough to have a lorry come to visit us and could have a practice at how far away we would need to be from the lorry for it to stop without injuring us – a lot of us underestimated the distance so this activity was very worthwhile.  We were allowed in the cab and were excited to find two bunk-beds and a fridge!

This week we also enjoyed learning our harvest songs and taking part in the whole school harvest assembly.  We’re really beginning to understand how and why we should help each other.

I hope you all have a fantastic week off!  Have fun and keep yourselves safe (especially in the darker evenings – wear your Gist reflective keyrings!).  And just a wee warning, as it’s my birthdays in the holidays, I’ll be even older and grumpier next term!  Happy holidays!!
