Update from Primary 1

This week our main focus has been on our Nativity which we hope everyone enjoyed.

We discussed our favourite parts and here are what some children thought:

Libby (The Donkey) said “I liked when I went to the front of the stage to help Joseph to Bethlehem.”

Lyall (A Shepherd) said “I liked singing. My favourite song was Mary’s Angel.”

Lillie (Mary) said “I liked being Mary.”

Andrew (The Soldier) “I liked singing Away in a Manger.”

Jonathan (Sidney the shepherd) said “I liked cutting the sheep.”

Lucy C (Star) said “I liked when Sidney cut the sheep.”

Tyler (A cow) said “I liked the singing.”

In Maths we began to learn about symmetry which we all enjoyed. We will begin to create our own symmetrical pictures next week.

In Health and Wellbeing, we learnt that people are different and that is okay. We did this by answering questions about ourselves and using certain colour to colour in teddy bears so we could see the differences we all have.

We had visitors arrive this week, Jingle and Tinsel (Santa’s Elves) who started by creating mischief and now we need to find them every morning in different area of the classroom.

The Christmas Craft afternoon will not be until the 18th December because of other events.  If you can make it, it would be lovely to see you.

P7/6 News

What a busy few weeks in P7/6 as last week we had lots of Book Week Scotland activities going on, Christmas Fayre activities and this week lots of learning has been taking place.

I was very impressed with how the class engaged in Book Week and how engaged they are with their personal reading. It is great to see! Our next class library visit will be on Wednesday 20th December – children are welcome to bring along their own library cards.

Well done Primary 7 on raising a fantastic amount of £470 towards our Enterprise fund. This will go towards their end of year trip to Blair Drummond Safari Park. Primary 6’s made £21 from their stall and have decided to have a picnic (once the weather improves!)

This week we have put in lots of final practise for our Puss In Boots performance. On Thursday we gave our first performance to an audience during our dress rehearsal to the whole school. Some of the class were very nervous but all of the children did a fabulous job. We have a few things to work on before our performances on Monday afternoon and Thursday evening. We are looking forward to seeing lots of parents/carers at our performances. Thank you for all of the effort in providing costumes etc.

In Maths, the Tetrahedrons group have been looking at how to interpret bank statements and solving calculations on statements. They have also looked at being able to use exchange rates to convert £ into different currencies. Well done. The Squares have been working on their calculator skills in being able to use the four operations to calculate totals. The Circles have been looking at adding amounts and finding change from different amounts.

During Literacy we have been looking at the reading skill of inference. We used the Pixar Short ‘For the Birds’ to help us look at things we knew were happening but the director did not state. This is a really tricky skills which we will need to keep working on.

Have a lovely weekend 🙂

Primary 2 Update

This week was busy with some Christmas activities. Here are some comments by the children about what we got up to:

“We made some paper chains using patterns. We used loads and loads of coloured paper strips and then we made patterns with the paper strips, and then we made chains with red, green, blue, and white. We hung them up on the Christmas tree.” – Sebastian

“We made snowflakes out of paper. We put them up on the window with our pictures on them.” – Lauren

“We practised our dances for the Christmas party. One was the Hokey Cokey and the other was the Grand Old Duke of York.” – Lily

“Today we took water in two tubs and put one on the radiator and the other on a table and we have to wait and see if it dissolves. That means the water is turning into gas.” – Summer

“We watched the Puss in Boots pantomime. My favourite bit was when Puss in Boots said to remember to slap your thighs.” – Natalie

“We did some writing. We wrote about The Snowman. We had to make a story about what was happening in the pictures.” – Mollie

“We finished the nativity on Wednesday and we had Christmas dinner. My favourite song of the nativity was Mary’s Angel. The nativity was called Mary’s Knitting.” – Grace

“We did adding and taking away up to 50 and up to 20 in maths.” – Reiley

“We learned about hurricanes. We were writing about hurricanes. The eye wall is the most dangerous part of a hurricane.” – Calum

“We started learning how to play Rounders in PE. I liked when I was pinging the ball and we had to run and get it.” – Nicole

Everyone did a super job during the nativity performances this week. Here is a picture of the stage all decorated for the nativity:

Have a lovely weekend!

Regional Improvement Collaboratives

Regional Improvement Collaboratives (RIC)

Over a number of years schools in the Broxburn Cluster and from across West Lothian have been successfully working together within a collaborative culture to ensure best outcomes for all of our children and young people.  As part of the Scottish Government’s priorities on raising attainment, ensuring excellence and equity and closing the poverty related attainment gap, Regional Improvement Collaboratives have been established to support the already existing good practice.  West Lothian is part of the Forth Valley and West Lothian Improvement Collaborative (West Lothian, Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmananshire) and will work together with these local authorities to share good practice and supports in each of the following areas:

– Performance and Quality Improvement

– Literacy

– Numeracy

– Early Learning and Childcare

– Leadership of Learning and Professional Learning

By working together we will ensure a greater level of support to schools to ensure best outcomes for all of our children and young people in order that they meet their full potential.  If you have any questions about the Regional Improvement Collaboratives then please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Primary 2 Update

Last week, beginning 27 November, was book week. We had different activities every day, as well as nativity rehearsals and doing some maths and PE! Here are some pictures of what we did:

On Monday the whole school had DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read). We also had a visitor come and read to the class. He read a few chapters from Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown.

On Tuesday everyone got a book bag from Read Write Count that included some books, games, and activities. It was lovely to see some of the parents and carers there that afternoon!

On Wednesday, Primary 6/5 came along to read with us. They heard their P2 buddy read something out loud to them, and then they read a book out loud to their P2 buddy. Everyone did such a lovely job!

On Thursday, another visitor came along to read some lovely Hairy Maclary books, by Lynley Dodd. We also had our Big Bedtime Read, where the children got to dress in their pajamas or onesie and bring a teddy and blanket for some comfy stories. We also used our blankets to make dens under the tables! The last thing we did on Thursday was enjoy a Book Tasting session, in which the children got a cup of juice and biscuit while they looked through a variety of books on display.

On Friday, we read the fairy tale The Gingerbread Man and then played a tig game in which the wolf tried to catch all our “gingerbread men”, who had to run as fast as they could to get away!

I’m sure the children went home tired on Friday after all the things we got up to last week! This week has been lovely so far. We’ll be sure to update you again on Friday about all the lovely things we are doing.

Book Week in P4

Last week was Scottish Book Week.  We did lots of book and reading related activities and had a lot of fun.  Here’s what we thought of Book Week:

‘My favourite activity was making dens and reading and drinking hot chocolate for the Big Bedtime Read.  I loved it when we were at the library and we got to look at the books – my favourite one to look at was Really Weird Removals.Com.’ Kara

‘I liked the P4/3 Three Little Pigs assembly.  I liked how they sang the song at the end.’  Mason

‘We did lots of activities and I really enjoyed the Blankety Blank activity during Reading with Revels because it was about the Titanic.’  Robert

‘I enjoyed reading Rumpelstiltskin for Fairytale Friday.  I hadn’t heard the story before.’  Lucas

‘I liked when we went to the library and that we got to make dens and drink hot chocolate.  I also liked the story of Rumpelstiltskin.’  Pola

‘I liked the trip to the library.  The story about the haggis was good and the dance off was fun – we did a Scottish hokey cokey.’  Blair

‘I liked when we were building dens – ours was small, dark and quiet.  Me and Nicole liked it because it was peaceful.  The only light coming in was the light from our torch.’  Sophie
