Primary 5 – Term 3 learning, events and activities

Primary 5 have been very busy and straight back into learning after a very enjoyable festive break. I really enjoyed hearing and reading about what everyone got up to over the holidays in our Circle Time discussions and Recount Writing. The weather has clearly shown that it doesn’t want to quite let go of Winter just yet and although I have not been able to get to school for most of the week, I have been kept up to date with all the news, great learning and hard work going on in school in my absence!

There are a lot of exciting events coming up, especially for Primary 5 this term. Firstly, we will be having an assembly on the 26th of January to celebrate Robert Burns day and one of our P5  children will be chosen to recite a short Scots poem, along with one child from each of the other year groups. Followed by a day at Xcite Broxburn Sports Centre, on the 1st February, to complete fun swimming exercises and an assessment of each child’s skills. We then also have the Handball Festival on the 8th of February and we have started to practise for this exciting day by learning and improving our handball skills in P.E.

The P.E schedule has changed a little this term as the children have no doubt told you about. Indoor P.E will now be on a Monday and a Thursday and Outdoor P.E will be on a Tuesday, (weather permitting). Can I please ask that all children, who haven’t already, have their indoor and outdoor P.E kits brought back to school and children also have appropriate footwear available for these days.

This term we have started to learn about different types of Poetry in Literacy, the life and invasion of The Romans and soon we will be exploring fun and interesting facts about Space. We have just started to learn about 2D & 3D shapes in Maths and we will have lots of opportunities to learn skills and concepts through our exciting new topics. It will be especially interesting to learn about and compare Roman coins to the British money we studied in Term 2.

Lastly, we are so excited about our new Community cupboard that has been generously donated to and set up in our school. This ties really nicely in with the theme of our recent class novel, Wonder , along with the connecting stories we are currently reading in R.J Palacio’s other book, Auggie & Me. Kindess and friendship are key concepts in these stories and we are regularly adding marbles to our own Wonder ‘Kindess Jar’ because of all the lovely, thoughtful words and actions of the children in P5.
