Week beginning the 9th of October 2017
In our final week before half term we were very busy :
- We completed our newspaper reports on the sinking of the Titanic and typed them up
- We revised mental strategies that we could use for mental addition of three and four digit numbers
- We tried to solve this weeks Daily Rigour Maths Challenge
- We carried out research for our essay on ‘Make A Difference’ we decided to focus on how we could make little changes that would help to save the planet -some of the things we investigated were non- renewable and renewable energy sources, how we could reduce, reuse and recycle materials, and how we could walk instead of driving everywhere!
- We continued to make our 3D Titanics..
We still have to look at the the lessons that were learnt from the sinking of the Titanic and we will finish our topic after the holidays…..
Week beginning the 2nd of October 2017
This week is Primary 7 we have continue on with on Topic on the Titanic.
- We found out about how the Titanic sank.
- In Reading we had to become detectives to find out why it sank. We looked at ‘Inference’ and found out that it means reading between the lines and looking for the clues in the text. We investigated maps to find out where the icebergs were at the time and to see if Captain Smith made a mistake taking the route he took. We also looked at the lifeboat launch log to see if the lifeboats had been loaded correctly!
- In Maths we investigated temperatures and what the temperature was on the night the Titanic sank. we found out how to add and subtract negative numbers.
- In Art we investigated Art Deco patterns and fashions on the Titanic.
- We had a great afternoon of outdoor learning and focused on our team building skills!
- We also continued with our Rock Band Project… we practised an African song and tribal dance.
- Some of our girls took part in the West Lothian Cross Country run. Well done to all the girls and to Beth who came third!!
- We also designed Christmas cards..so they would be back in time to send to our family and friends!

This has been a busy week in Primary 7
- We started our Rock Band project and found out about African tribal music
- In Maths we investigated negative numbers and when we would use them, we looked at measuring temperatures and at some bank balances that were overdrawn!
- In Writing we finished off our fact files about the Titanic including lots of information on the crew and passengers on board
- In Reading we found out about how key words in questions can help us to find answers in the text
- We completed our 3D picture sketches of the Titanic. We did a great job they look fab! We also studied Art Deco patterns and created our own patterns in the same style.
- We also had out first transition meeting with a Literacy morning at St Kent’s
- On Friday we bought lots of cakes at the bake sale, it was great!

This week
- In Writing we started our fact file we researched information on the crew and passengers on board the Titanic.
- For Scottish Maths week we included Maths across the curriculum, we created posters to explain Place Value, we created graphs for the number of First , Second, and Third class passengers on board the Titanic. We also got outside and went on a 3D shape hunt.
- In Art we continued with our 3D pictures of the Titanic.
- We had a great day on Wednesday when the Travelling Tuba team came to St. Joseph’s and showed us how to play lots of different instruments from around the world. Then we performed a class salsa on different instruments. It was fantastic!
Week beginning the 04th of September
This week in Primary 7 in Maths we found out how to round numbers to hundreds of millions. We also looked at rounding numbers to help us estimate answers. In Writing we revised power openers and how to use them in our story ‘The Shape Shifter’ to help us to up-level our writing. We started our ‘Unsinkable Ship’ topic. We created our own Titanic for our wall display. We found out why the ship was built, who built the ship, where it was built and why it was built. We also completed lots of challenges to help us find out more about the ship. We investigated how to draw a 3D picture of the Titanic. This was tricky.! Matthew told us about his walk last Saturday across the new Queensferry Crossing. We also created our own hands of prayer!
Week beginning the 28th of August
Welcome to P7. We hope you enjoy our blog. Over the past two weeks we have been fining out about and completing challenges on our Rights. We have also thought about our Class Charter so everyone in our class can achieve their rights. In Maths we found out about place value to 100s of millions and about ordering numbers. In writing we used lots of descriptive language to start our imaginative story on the Shape Shifter. In Art we created a self portrait in the style of Modigliani. We are settling into our new class and hope that it is going to be a fun year!

This week we all took part in the school show Pirates of the Currybean. We did a great job we remembered all of our lines! The show was fantastic!

This week we were on our induction days at St. Kents and the Academy we will tell you all about it next week!
Week beginning the 5th June 2017
This week we were back in class …we were still tired from camp! On Monday we met the author Lori Don and found out about the Spellchasers trilogy. We also found out how to make our stories more exciting. On Tuesday we completed more transition work. We investigated PEE chains and wrote a critical essay on the poem ‘Street Talk’ We continued with our rehearsals for the Pirates of the Currybean. We worked on our Rockstars for our bands. Some of us started to make outfits for Buddy. On Friday we went to the Rugby festival and we won all our matches! The P6’s moved up into our classroom while we were at Rugby!!
Friday Last Day 2nd June 2017
Today was our last day on camp. We had a disco last night so we are all very tired! Here are some more pictures!
Camp 1st June 2017 – Thursday
Today was fun we went zip-wiring, canoeing, tree climbing and did the low ropes. We had lots and lots and lots of rain! We are looking forward to tonight’s disco and bonfire IF it stops raining!
Camp 31st May 2017 – Wednesday
Today was hot, hot, hot! We went mountain biking, canoeing and completed a tricky challenge course. A fantastic day!

Some of us didn’t get much sleep last night but we were up bright and early for abseiling and crate building this morning.
Camp 29th May 2017 – First Day Monday
Here are some photos of our first day at ‘Camp’. Today we did the Crate Challenge, Problem Solving Initiatives, Tree Climb and Low ropes. It was great!
Week Beginning the 22nd May 2017
This has been Health and Well- Being week so we have been busy finding out how to keep our bodies healthy. We took part in a Synergy Movement class and played touch rugby on Monday. On Tuesday we had a super visit from Tesco and found out about food for fuel and how to count calories. We also made fruit kebabs. In the afternoon we had our Sport Day …it was great fun and it didn’t rain! On Wednesday we found out how to save a life by doing CPR and ringing for an ambulance quickly. We also did some cool dance move to ‘Honey G’. On Thursday we went to the church to celebrate the Ascension. P7 delivered the mass readings with some help from our fantastic P1 class. In the afternoon we had Sports Around the school organised by Mrs McMasters and all of our class. On Friday we celebrated Day for Change by taking our learning outside. We also raised money to help malnourished children in Liberia.
Week beginning the 15th May 2017
This week in Primary 7 a mystery package arrived , we had to guess what was in the box. We had to write about what we thought was in the box and we also had to persuade our class so they would vote for us and then we would be allowed to open the box. Finally we got to open the box and me met Buddy. He had come all the way from America and we have to make into a pop star. We are very excited, to make him into a star, we have to set up our own pop groups and we have to make a video of our performance. Then there will be a vote on who has made Buddy into the biggest star! In Maths we looked at calculating area. In reading we continued with out transition project and in writing we continued our critical essay on Timothy Winters. In Science we completed our experiments on taking risks with our bodies. We prepared a performance of ‘I’ll Never Forget You’ by Zara Larson for Mrs Moore to say a final goodbye and we performed on Friday for her. We remembered all or cool dance moves!
Week beginning the 8th May 2017
It has been hectic in P7 this week. In Literacy we started to look at how we could write a critical essay based on the poem ‘Timothy Winters’ by Charles Causely, we were found out about imagery by looking at metaphors and similes. In Maths we worked on ‘Scale’ and took advantage of the great weather by taking our learning outside, this really helped us to scale up our drawings and to see how scale would work for builders and architects in real life. In Health and Well Being and Science we talked about what taking risks with our bodies would mean. We carried out our own smoking and drug investigations and what they would do to our bodies. We examined labels and we also carried out experiments to determine the levels of sugar and glucose in fizzy drinks and finally we made graphs to show this. We talked about what glucose would do to our bodies if we ate too much sugar, and how this could lead to type 2 diabetes. We had a lovely May procession and sang some great hymns to Mary. We also practised our ‘News presentations’. In Art we created our own pictures in Manga style.The football team elected their captain ..well done great choice! Our new captain is Evan McHugh! We were also delighted to be awarded with our Going for Gold Medals! We also had lots of visitors to the school.. our last visitors were the ‘Deacons Court’ and we got to try on some of their robes, which was great fun. Have a great weekend ..we hope there are no more rugby injuries. Kinloch has been on crutches this week!

This has been a short week in Primary 7. We have started to work on on our Transition work by reading a text on the ‘Pound Note’ and showing our comprehension by completing a Cloze procedure. In Writing we worked on the order of our presentations on our Japanese Disaster, we haven’t had time to present our news and will do this next week. In Maths we continued to look at number sequences. We enjoyed working on our Sway presentations. In RE we revised the mysteries of the rosary and designed rosary beads for our wall display.
Week beginning the 24th April 2017
This week in P7 we investigated travel in Japan and drew our own bullet trains! In Literacy we worked in groups using the Fox Tool to find out about the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan in 2011. We had to decide who would be newsreaders, reporters from Japan, scientists from the nuclear plant, rescue workers, video editors and sound technicians. Next week we are going to present our news reports to the class. In Maths we consolidated our learning on ‘Time’ by playing board games. We also started to work on Number sequences. We improved our problem solving skills by choosing Maths challenge cards and playing Sumdog. In ICT we finished our Japan brochures, our Energy reports and we started to find out about Yammer. Some of us enjoyed ‘Outdoor Learning’ when we went Mountain Biking . On Friday we had a visit from Linlithgow Academy to find out about what our day would be like at the Academy next year. We can’t wait.

Welcome back after the Easter break! We are all ready for our last term at St. Joseph’s. We are finishing off our Japan topic before we start our final topic which will take a vote on next week. This week in writing we looked at how to write Japanese poems called Haiku and wrote some of our own. In Maths we finished off our topic on Time. We studied food in Japan. In Art we finished off our Tsunami colour bending and movement pictures , our crayon resist pictures of Mt. Fuji our Kimonos and our Japanese symbols.

This week in Primary 7 we were very busy completing our CEM adaptive testing. We also worked on uplevelling our VCOP skills to write a story called ‘Tsunami’. In Maths we looked at solving word problems based on Time. We also started our ‘ Are you ready for S1 Maths ‘ booklet. In Topic we investigated land use in Japan. In Science we studied different types of energy. In Art we looked at colour blending and movement in pictures to create our Great Wave picture based on the work of Japanese artist Hokusai. We also created out own kimonos and rice bowls. Finally we stated to find out about Japanese symbols and what they mean.

This week in Primary 7 in Literacy we completed our graphic story on Sadako Sasaki, we also looked at emotive language in texts. In Maths we found out about durations of time, we read timetables and we looked at measuring how fast we could complete activities in seconds … we got to use our phones and learn outside, so this was great fun! On Wednesday we went to visit Heriot Watt university to find out about Robotics it was exciting! We got to meet some very cool robots and to programme our own sphero and make it move around the room. In Art we created a wall display map of Japan and of Sadako Sasaki.
Week beginning the 6th March 2017
On Friday we went to the Howden park Centre to receive our Stellar Award! It was really fun to see all the other pupils from Primary and Secondary schools receive their awards too. This week in Maths we completed a Carpet Calculations challenge; we had to use lots of different Maths Strategies to solve the problem. We finally started our Japan topic. We found out all about the geography of Japan. We investigated Latitude and Longitude and found coordinates for different places around the world. In Literacy we read the story of Sadako Sasaki and how her life was affected by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. We wrote a graphic story based on her life. In Art we made origami paper cranes , we would like to make 1,000 like Sadako, this represents her hope for peace in the world. We presented information on WW2 to the rest of class.
Week beginning the 27th February 2017
This week P7 went to Central hall in Edinburgh for the finals of the Mock Court Case. There were 3 judges presiding over the case. There were schools from all over Scotland. We got to present our case for Mrs Norah Telfer. It was very nerve wracking so we were delighted when we got a runners up trophy! Very well done Oscar, Kyle, Amalia, Euan and Iris! We were all very relieved that the case for Telfer is finally over!. On Tuesday we had pancakes to celebrate pancake Tuesday. On Wednesday we learned about the Human Body it was great to see inside the body by going on a Google Expedition. We also had a taster session with Voice Rocks from a singing coach. We thought about Lent and made our Lenten promises. We also got our ashes to mark the start of Lent. We continued with our Fractions, Decimals and percentages topic. In Health and Well -Being we thought about the Rights of Farmers and their families and how we can help by buying Fairtrade products. We created Fairtrade posters. We worked on applying our learning by solving word problems. On Friday we had a whole school sponsored welly walk around the loch. It was great fun but very foggy!

Take a Peek at Our Week!
Welcome back after mid- term break. It has been very hectic in P7. We finished off our WW2 Topic and also prepared to return to court for the finals of the ‘Mock Court’ case. In Literacy we wrote an imaginative story on the attack at Pearl Harbour. In Maths were worked on linking Fractions Decimals and Percentages. In Topic we looked at the evidence from our new opponents, a school from Perth, and thought about the best ways to defend our case. We will also be performing on stage so we have been practising our song ‘Caledonia’ on the Ukulele. In Art we created our own 3D Anderson shelters. Lauren and Iris prepared for the bake sale for Mitochondrial disease. We also had our Shiny Friday Committees and Masterclasses on Friday, it’s been a great week.

Take a Peek at Our Week!
This week in P7 we introduced our Learning Detectives , our Detective’s role is to investigate the learning happening in our classroom each day and to take some pictures and write some notes about what we learn each day. This week our Learning Detectives were Euan and Oscar. Here is what they found out
- In Maths we looked at Fractions of amounts, we also continued with the Scottish Maths Problem solving challenge. One of the problems this time was based on guessing someone’s birthday based on probability.. it was very tricky!
- In topic we really enjoyed making our Holocaust ripples where we had to think of the impact of the Holocaust.
- In Literacy we completed our Spy stories.
- In Art we loved making our Blitz pictures using mixed media.
- Some of us also went Skiing which was great fun we learned how snowplough.
- In PE we were improving our gymnastic skills by creating a sequence.
- We also auditioned for our school show ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’.
It has been a great week in P7.

Week beginning the 23rd January 2017
In P7 this week we practised singing Caledonia with our Ukuleles and we also worked on our ‘Please Don’t Go’ song from ‘Sunshine on Leith’. We then put on a fantastic performance for our Burns Celebration on Wednesday. In Literacy we continued with our ‘Spy Story’ trying to use as many adjectives as possible to describe our character and the setting. In maths we found out how to add fractions and we checked to see if we could apply our learning by completing our Maths mastery problems. In topic we started to find out about the Holocaust and how millions of Jews were discriminated against. In PE we had a Fencing Taster session and found out about some Fencing moves. We also visited St. Kentigern’s for a Ceilidh as part of our Transition activities. Finally our Friday we came together for our P4 Mass on Baptism and in Science we continued to find out about atoms, the Periodic Table and the structures of molecules.

This week in P7 in Maths we found out about BODMAS and the order of operations, we also revised how to divide a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number. In writing we started our spy story ‘The Shadow’, we investigated spy words like counterintelligence and dead drop we have also been trying to uplevel our stories using all the element so VCOP. In topic we found out about the rise of Nazi Germany. In Art we completed our propaganda posters and in ICT we completed our Blitz comics. In RE we plotted the missionary journeys of St Paul on a map. We also started to sing songs for our Burn’s Celebration next week and to audition for the school show the Pirates of the Currybean.

Happy New Year this week in P7, in ICT, we created and information leaflet using Word publisher on the Government instructions on Evacuation during WW2. In Literacy, we wrote a letter from an Evacuee home to their parents using lots of adjectives to describe their new life in the country. In Maths, we created our own spreadsheets using Excel and completed our Assessments on Data handling. In Topic, we studied The Blitz we created our own gas masks. In French, we talked about hobbies. In Art, we completed our own Evacuees using mixed media. We also found out about propaganda, and started to create our own posters. We looked at some WW2 tanks and soldiers that Mia’s dad made when he was young. On Monday we had a visit from the SSPCA about what we should do if we find an animal in difficulty. We also had a taster Netball session. Phew it has been a busy week.

This week in p7 we used persuasive sentence starters to write a speech Hitler could have made to the German people to convince them to fight! We found out about Integers in Maths and what negative numbers meant in our bank balance! We also started to make our salt dough Christmas decorations , our amazing 3D snowflakes and our Catching Snowflakes pictures. We have glitter everywhere…. Sadly we had our last Christmas party and our last panto at Saint Joseph’s!!! …. We are really into the Christmas spirit now. We delivered the Christmas post with our P1 buddies. We helped to round up all the Mission Christmas presents and we wore our slippers and brought in £1 to help Shelter Scotland so others can have a home at Christmas. We hope that EVERYONE has a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR !

The Christmas spirit continued this week in P7. We had a busy week with 2 performances of the Donkey’s Christmas! Amalia and Oscar did a fab job as MCs …both in the school and at the church. Our brass players Elsie, Kyle, Kinloch, Evan and Oscar were wonderful. We sang Hallelujah! Well done to all the fab singers in P7! In Maths we completed our Assessment on Multiplication. In Literacy we completed our persuasive arguments on the reasons for and against the ‘Treaty Of Versailles’ we also continued to write our Christmas books for P1. In Topic we found out about Conscription, Evacuation and The Home Front. We spent some time organising our profiles for St. Joseph’s Journey on Friday. It has been a hectic week! Is it nearly Christmas?
Week beginning the 28th November 2016
We started to get into the Christmas spirit this week in P7! We walked to the church to have our Nativity rehearsal. On Wednesday we also rehearsed in the school. We celebrated St. Andrew’s Day by having a mass in the school. We also had our Christmas lunches and we were very busy using our Money Maths skills to price books, toys and cakes for the Christmas Fayre. We manned stalls at the fayre and used our Maths skills to calculate change. In Topic we found out about Appeasement we held a mini debate on reasons for and against appeasement. We also completed topic challenges and continued to write our persuasive argument on the reasons for and against the Treaty of Versailles.

This week in P7 we enjoyed lots of ‘Book Week Scotland’ activities. We read our favourite books, we had a Big Book Swap and Lucky Book Dip, we enjoyed becoming Illustrators and we drew pictures of our favourite book characters. We loved our paired reading with Primary 1 and Primary 2. We enjoyed listening to our Mystery reader read from War Horse. In Topic we found out all about Hitler and how some of his actions caused WW2. In Literacy we enjoyed using the Fox Tool activity to make notes and then feed them back to our group. We found out all about the reasons for and against the Treaty of Versailles and started to organise our information to write our own arguments. In Maths we looked at long Multiplication. We also found our how to solve algebraic equations to help us with the Maths Problem Solving Challenge!
Week beginning the 14th November 2016
Welcome back to Primary 7, this week in Literacy we planned our arguments on the reasons for and against the Treaty of Versailles. In Maths we continued with our Multiplication topic and we looked at HOTs and word challenges. In Topic we found out about the reasons for WW1 and WW2 and thought about the reasons for many conflicts in the world today. We had a focus on Science in our classroom and we found out about elements, compounds, mixtures and solutions. We studied the periodic table and carried out investigations to see if we could separate mixtures and solutions. We wrote up our investigations using scientific language. In Art we completed our poppy watercolour pictures. In PE we took part in the Interschools Sportshall Athletics and we came fourth! It was great fun.

This week in Primary 7 in Topic we went to Edinburgh Sheriff Court to present the case of Norah Telfer.The Pursuers were against Knightsridge school in Livingston and the Defenders were against Kings Meadow School in Haddington. The Court Case was held in Courts 14 and 15 with reals Sheriffs and clerks presiding. We had excellent questions from our solicitors and excellent acting from our Witnesses, they stuck to their stories and showed CCTV footage to prove their case. All the children were amazing and were delighted to win ! They were very excited to win and it was hard to get back onto our next topic ‘War and Conflict’ on Thursday! We started with our KWL grid , we looked at a video on WW1 and in Literacy we studied the poem ‘In Flanders Field’ and we wrote poems of our own to remember all those who died in war. We also made 3D poppie and sketched fields of poppies, we painted our poppies using watercolours. In Maths we finished our topic on 2 and 3D shape.

This week in Primary 7 we got dressed up for our Halloween parade! it was really hard to recognise some people..fantastic costumes and face painting!. We celebrated All Saints Mass at the church. It was a lovely mass thanks to Mrs Wilson and P4 and some super readers from P7 Elise and Evan MacKenzie. In Maths we continued with our topic on symmetry by finding lines of symmetry and creating our own symmetrical shapes. We created some spooky Halloween 2D shapes. In Literacy we completed another newspaper report for our Court case from the Talk & Txt point of view. Our lawyers visited again so we could fine tune our Solicitor and Witness performances. In Art we started to create 3D poppies and collected money for the Scottish poppy appeal.
Week beginning the 25th October 2016
This week in Primary 7 we’re back after our lovely Autumn break. On our first day back we had a visit from the Scottish parliament. We got to vote for our own MSPs , we wrote a manifesto, we also got to set a new law to lower the age of Social Media! In Literacy we have written a story about ‘The Witch’ based on Roald Dahl’s book ‘The Witches’. We looked at setting and using lots of adjectives to describe the witch!. In Maths we have completed our assessments on Subtraction. We also solved a problem by using an organised list or table. In Topic we now have a date for our Court appearance – the 9th November at 5.30pm. We have been busy measuring up and making our Court gowns. we have also recorded some CCTV footage in the Talk& Txt shop and we have continued to produce our evidence or productions to back up our case. In Art we have continued to make our wigs and draw courtroom scenes.
Week beginning the 10th October 2016
This week in Primary 7 in Literacy we worked in groups to create an advert for the Rokia 999 and then created our own. We also found out how to write a reflective essay, we found this hard because we had to describe our thoughts and feelings a lot.
In Maths we looked at Budgeting, we found out about Credit, Debit and Store cards, we also found out that you have to pay interest if you don’t pay your Credit card bill or your Store card bill on time! We also looked at bank statements and we found out about special offers and deals in the shops.
In Art we started to create our wigs for the Mock Court case. In topic we had a visit from the local Procurator Fiscal and we found out a lot about corroboration; that you need two different pieces of evidence to convict someone. We also discussed DNA evidence and Cyber bullying(Thanks for taking the time to visit Deborah, we learned a lot!) . We practised our roles for the court case and started to video our CCTV coverage. Some of our P7 s Mia, Kyle and Evan went to visit another school to get some ideas for our playground. We also visited P1 and P2 to find out about their Katie Morag topic they told us all about it. They sang us a song and we completed some Katie Morag activities, it was fun! We also had our Shiny Friday and Masterclasses. It has been a great term. Now we can’t wait for our holidays. Week beginning the 3rd October 2016
This week in Primary 7 in Literacy we created newspaper reports about mobile phone giant Talk & Txt taking poor Norah Telfer, a 63 year pensioner to court! In Maths we completed our assessments on Addition. In reading we focused our improving our comprehension skills by challenging ourselves with 2nd level reading comprehension cards. In Topic we looked at Direct questioning and Cross Examination of our witnesses ie asking open and closed questions. We practised with our witnesses and our solicitors found out how tricky it can be to ask questions because you don’t really know what answer the witness is going to give!! We also had a visit from our Pursuers and Defenders solicitors, Sheila and Deborah, to help us with our adjustments to our initial Writ and Defenses.. In Art we completed our Young Scot ID cards and started to create our 3D mobile phones from 2 D plans. On Friday we shared our profiles with our parents so they could see some of our work. Another busy week in Primary 7!
Week beginning the 26th September 2016
This week in Primary 7 in Maths we have continued with our block on Addition ,we also completed the last problem for the “Scottish Maths Problem Solving Challenge”. In Literacy we wrote diaries for our characters in the “Mock Court Case Project”. We found out about Court Productions; these are the pieces of evidence we will need for our ‘Court Case’. We thought about what types of evidence we would need to produce and carried out research to produce our own medical letters, eye tests, bills, invoices, contracts etc We really had to use our HOTS ( Higher Order Thinking) skills this week. In reading we studied the features of arguments, we looked at how we would set out our own arguments, with an argument and a counter- argument. Our Solicitors thought hard about the questions they would ask their witnesses. We also had our first transition visit to St. Kent’s which was very exciting, we had a fantastic time!

This week in Primary 7 in Maths we have moved on to mental addition of two and three digit numbers,some of us puzzled over the Scottish Maths problem Solving Challenge it took us a little time to find a solution but we found one in the end using our division skills! In Literacy we completed our ‘Heist’ imaginative story, we tried to uplevel our stories using power openers and high level connectives. In Topic we caught up with some of our challenges, we studied Mrs Telfer’s phone bill to look for errors, and we looked at the types of calls she had made with her old phone to prove that she didn’t need a fancy smartphone, so her grandson should not have been sold one! In Art we started to design our Lawyers gowns we thought that we could use the school crest as part of our designs. On Wednesday we took part in an Aerobics workout to raise money for Lepra.

This week in Maths we completed our Topic assessments on Place Value, Rounding and Estimating. In writing we started our imaginative story on The Heist our focus this week was on using Super Story Starters. In topic we found out more about the roles of the different people in Court. Next week we will find out which we have.. we are very excited. We had our Meet the teacher information evening and our first Shiny Friday so we all know what our committees and masterclasses are! It was fun learning with some of our buddies from Next week we are going to design our Solicitor’s gowns. We are still looking for any help from any parent with a sewing machine!

This week in Maths we continued to identify Place Value, to Round and Estimate numbers to hundreds of millions. In writing we studied all the information we had on the Mobile Phone company Talk and Text and created a fact file. We found out how about laws are made in Scotland. We visited Edinburgh University and met all the other schools taking part in the Mock Court Case. we also found out the type of clothes a Sheriff wears and all about the different gowns worn by Sheriffs and Solicitors. when we got back to class we found out about the importance of proportion when drawing faces so we could become Court Artists and draw faces of all the people in Court. We also had Planet Picnic with our parents. It has been a busy week.

This week in topic we found out about the different types of laws and Courts in Scotland. We have split our class into the Pursuers and Defenders teams. We had a visit from two Solicitors to talk about the case of Talk & Text vs Mrs Norah Telfer. We studied the case of Norah Telfer to find out why she was being sued by Talk & Text and we wrote up the facts of her story including some facts of our own. In Maths we looked at Place Value for numbers up to hundreds of millions. In Health and Well Being we thought about our personal network and the people who support us. We also studied lots of children’s Rights and created our own Class Charter. In Art we created portraits to show that all people are equal. In PE we started to develop some new Volleyball and Hockey skills. We also had our first class mass with a Harvest theme. We are very pleased with all the fruit and vegetables we have harvested at St. Joseph’s! Some of our mums have been busy making lots of soup!
Our topic this term is The Unsinkable Ship, this is topic will help us consolidate all of the skills that we have learned this year so we are very excited.

Hello again we are sorry we have not updated our P6/7 blog page recently things have been very hectic in P6/7. We have been working on our Leavers book, we have also had our Leavers disco, our Bugsy Malone showcase, and our Gala day . We have continued to work on our unsinkable ship topic. In writing we have completed our fact files on the people on board the Titanic, we have written letters and diary entries from the ship. We have created newspaper reports on the disaster and worked hard on our final imaginative story ‘Last night on the Titanic.’ We have completed our 3D Titanic models and are finishing off our cabins. We have investigated 1920s fashions and created our won 1920s outfits. In Maths we have investigated lots of Titanic problems using fractions, decimals and percentages. We have also investigated compass points, latitude and longitude. We completed our experiments on Floating and Sinking. Our P7s have gone on their inductions days to Cedar Banks, St. Kents and Linlithgow Academy and have had a fantastic time. We are all very tired now and almost ready for our holidays!

This has been Health and Well being week. We went to find out about the journey of our food at Tesco on our Farm to Fork journey. We compared the prices of fresh, frozen and tinned food. We also looked at food labels. We tried different types of healthy foods and made our own muesli!. We played football games at school. We also had a visit from a Speech and Language therapist and she showed us how we could see how our tongues makes different sounds using ultrasound. We had a visit from a GP and we had a look at all the different medical items in her doctors bag! We enjoyed finding out how much oxygen was in our blood and what our blood pressure was. We took part in a Zumba class which was brilliant fun and we played touch rugby. We continued with our ‘Unsinkable Ship’ topic investigating all the reasons why the Titanic sank. We continued looking at Fractions, Decimals and Percentages in Maths. We wrote a newspaper report on the sinking of the Titanic! Congratulations to Thomas for winning the doubles competition at ‘Linlithgow Tennis Club’.

This week we have continued with our Titanic topic. We have written a letter or diary about our journey on the ship. We have applied our knowledge of Fractions and Decimals to creating cakes in the ship restaurant with different toppings and costings for our finished cakes. We have also applied our knowledge of Fractions, Decimals and Percentages to investigating the people on board the Titanic, the supplies and the survivors from the ship. We had to read statistics and find information and we also had to use our ICT skills to create graphs to present our findings. In Music we continued to learn our Bugsy Malone “Down and Out” song , we now need to think of dance moves! We completed topic challenges on Morse code, Telegrams, Life on board the ship and created our own First, Second and Third class menus. We compared how healthy these menus were to menus today. In Science we continued with our Floating and Sinking Challenges. In Art we looked at 3 dimensions, proportion and perspective to sketch our Titanic ships. Our P6 found out about Smoking and the risks involved. We are delighted that Kamil and Megan have won prizes for their super writing in the Young Writer and Round Table competitions.

This week in Primary 6/7 we have continued to work on our Titanic Fact Files. We have been finding out about First Class passengers on the ship. We found out that many were millionaires. In Maths we continued to work on decimal numbers, this week we looked at identifying place value and on multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000. In Big Maths Beat That lots of us managed to beat the clock! In Topic we applied our learning by trying to work out what Fraction, Decimal and Percentage of people on board the Titanic were Crew, First, Second and Third class passengers. We are very proud of Megan, Thomas, Andrew and Iona who went on to win the Rotary Club Area Quiz!! Well done!

Hello from P6/7 this week in Maths we have moved onto converting Fractions into Decimals. In Writing we have started our Z books on the Titanic by creating a Fact File on the crew on board. We used our Persuasive writing skills to create posters for a trip on the Titanic and we looked at First, Second and Third class passengers when we created tickets for the trip. We started to paint our wall display of the Titanic and we investigated a cross section of the Titanic to see what it looked like inside. In French we revised our classroom instructions and had fun following the instructions when they were given to us in French. In Reading we continued working in Literacy circles and investigating how to up-level sentences. In Science we started to investigate Floating and Sinking; we looked at WHY things float and WHY they sink. We carried out different investigations which we will carousel each week, Sorting Sinkers, Fruit Float, Dead Sea Float and Up- Periscope to find out more information on the BIG Question.In PE we continued to work on our Cross Country and Tennis skills. In Talking and Listening we shared our news from this week in our Class Newsround. We had good discussions on the Hillsborough disaster and why the tragedy happened.

The P7s are all very tired after camp and need to work hard to catch up on the P6s who have a head start on us. In Maths this week we revised Fraction, improper fractions and mixed numbers lots of us found Fractions quite tricky. In Writing we looked at some Young Writer stories and chose to write either an imaginative story or a poem. Mrs McLean was very impressed with some of our work! In Topic we created our Big Question ‘Was the Titanic Unsinkable’ we will look at this question every week to find out more facts and decide what our answer to the Big Question will be. This week we created our KWL grids and researched facts on Why the Titanic was built , where the Titanic was built and what the Ship looked like. In RE we researched ‘Marraige’ and in groups looked at why people get married and the different types of ‘Marraige’ ceremony around the world. We investigated line and shape in Art Deco and created a city skyline using fine motor skills and the colours of the Art Deco period. We updated our profiles with all of our Outdoor learning achievements from camp and filed some of our chosen work to share with our parents.
Lockerbie Manor Camp 2016
Hello everyone we are having a great time her on Camp. Our rooms are fab and we have our own bathrooms. The food has been great and we have all had a go at all of the activities . We have played Manor Olympics, gone on an evening hill walk, we have worked together on crate and raft building. We got very wet when some of us fell of our rafts!! We have also enjoyed the Zip wire, climbing and making our own movie. We all had did the high ropes and abseiling !!Low ropes and the obstacle course.We had a disco and our own ‘ After Party’ in the girls room. Our last activites were Team games and Archery. We have had a fantastic time, Miss Henderson has got sore muscles she didn’t even know existed.. it hurts when she laughs. We are all exhausted!

Welcome back to our ‘Class Blog’ This has been a very bust and exciting week at St. Joseph’s .. the chickens arrived and we watched them hatch it was very exciting! The P7s completeed their CEM tests and had to think very hard and work quickly. We also revised fractions in Maths and found out how to add, subtract and multiply fractions. In Writing we found out how to write a ‘Film Review’. In Scince we studied different types of Penguins and created scale pictures of these penguins for our Wall Display. In Topic we continued on with our polar explorer topic challenges which had lots of maths included, these were tricky and we had to use our higher order thinking skills (HOTS!). InDrama we continued to improve our acting skills, and Freeze Frame in our class drama ‘Poles Apart’. In RE we found out about St Patrick ad enjoyed meeting the P1 leprauchan on ‘St. Patrick’s Day’ and we took part in the ‘St. Joseph’s Day’ Mass on Friday. We also got ready to share our work with our parents on ‘Parent’s Evening’. Our P7 team got presented with their trophy for winning the ‘Rotary Club Quiz, well done team we are very proud of Thomas, Megan, Andrew and Iona. We forgot to add our pictures of the class in their onesies for our ‘Day for Change’ last Friday so here they are now!

This week we worked on Fractions inMaths. We completed our imaginative story Ice Trap using similes. We watched a documentary on Robert Falcon Scott called ‘Tragedy at the Poles’ and found out some facts about him. We had to decide if he was a hero or if he hadn’t planned properly. We plotted his journey using latitude and longitude. We compared his journey to that of a modern day explorer to find out why they all died. In Science we found out about the type of protective clothing we would have to wear in a laboaratory. In ICT we created a comic on Global Warming. In Reading we used the Fox Tool to find out about Climate Change. We studied Inuit Art and created our own pictures in the same style. We worked on developing our acting skils in our drama Poles Apart! In PE we started our Touch Rugby sessions and developed our Tennis skills with mrs McMasters.

This week P6/7 went skiing. We learnt lots of new skills. it was very hard work but great fun! The children who chose to stay at school had a visit from Trevor potts a real polar explorer. He told us all about his journey in Shackletons’s foosteps and he had some great pictures of his trips and of polar animals we loved the baby seals!! we competed lots of Topic cahllenges on Ernest Shackleton we liked measing out the size of his boat the James Caird with string.We also enjoyed completing scales drawing and making our own quadrants so we can find our position using Polaris! We used chalk pastels to create our Northern Lights picturess. On Friday we went to our Committees and our Masterclasses ! Some of us are preparing for Day For Change and for the Spring fare. The ICT Masterclass are happy that they have almost completed their Scratch Rocket game!

This week in Literacy we have foucused on imaginative writing and written a story using similes. the story is called ‘Ice Trap’ and is about the polar explorer Ernest shackleton’s ship ‘The Endurance’ getting stuck in the ice. The crew had to eat seals and penguins! Im Maths we investigated integers and found differences in positive and negative numbers using themometers. In reading we had a Science focus and watched a movie on Brain – Pop about compounds, mixtures and solutions, we read information, and made notes. We used this information to help us in our Science experiments, We made a salt solution to mimic the Arctic ocean we then used the same volume of fresh water. Our Science question was which would freeze first the freshwater or the salt solution? We checked each every 30 minutes and found that the freshwater froze first. We are going to find out why next week. We also studied crystals for our Science experiment ‘Making Crystals’ next week. In RE we started our block on God’s Loving Plan we made our pledge to say how we could show love to our friends, our families, or ourselves. In topic we made Arctic Food chains we also applied our knowledge of scale to create scale drawings of Arctic animals on a poster. we are looking forward to our Ski Camp next week!

Hi everyone this has been a very short but exciting week in P6/7. On Wednesday P7 visited St. Kents as part of our transition programme to secondary school. We watched a play in French and English , it was very funny and we managed to work out a lot of what was going on. Luckily Paul was chosen to go on stage! He can speak fluent French.. so this was very handy!! In Maths we looked at problem solving strategies. In Literacy we completed our polar explorer biographies. In Science we studied ‘Eelectricity’ and created our own circuits we also found out about DC and AC current and the work of the scientists Thomas Edisonand Nikola Tessler. We studied world religions in RE. Four of our P7s went to the ‘Rotary Club Quiz’ which was held in our school this year and we were delighted when they won! Well done Andrew, Thomas, Megan and Iona. Our book club held a Skype session with the author Tara Daiman many thank to Mrs Chalmers for making this possible.

Welcome to P6/7 learning!! This week we have focused on Science and Health and Well Being. We thought about what Taking Risks means and then investigated how these risks like smoking, drinking alcohol, taking druag and even eating too much suger could affect our bodies. We looke data labels on lots of different drinks and then found out how much sugar was in each one. We then weighed out that amount of sugar into labeeled bags. We were really showed to find out that there was 54g of sugar in a small bottle of coca-cola! We then designed an experiment to investigate the the Glucose levels in each drink. we found out how drugs affect our bodies and also what the ingredient in cigarettes are. We also saw how smoking can affect our lungs. In Maths we completed our block on Division we solved problems with Magic squares. In Literacy we researced Polar Explorers and wrote a biography. In Reading we found out about Hypothermia and Frostbite. We answered literal and evaluative questions and created some questions of our own using our Blooms fans. In RE we thought about what we could do each day for Lent and created a calendar.

Here is our P6/7 news this week, we have continued with our Arctic and Antarctic animal fact sheets and reports , we are very happy with how much information we managed to squeeze onto them and how colourful they are!! We completed more of our maths games on Multiplication and started with’Division’ and ‘Long Division’ which is tricky. We are getting very quick at solving our pop music maths starters! In topic we continued with our challenges looking at climate and biome maps of the world. In ICT we used our excel skills to create graphs of max and min temperatures and snowfall each month in the Arctic. In Science we investigated how animals and humans stay warm. Our Science challenges included researching and dressing a polar explorer, an Eskimo, and looking at how long we could keep or hand in a bath of ice water with and without blubber…. we found out we could leave it in a lot longer when it was encased in a bag of blubber!! Thomas brought in his trophy that he won for swimming! Ciara and Andrew M also celebrated success when they won the Antibullying poster competition. Well done everybody!!

P6/7 has had a fantastic week especially with our Burns’ celebration on Monday, when we sang ‘ My Maws’ a Millionaire’ and ‘Stay and Make My Heart Fly’ by the Proclaimers . In Literacy we completed our ‘Arctic Habitats’ reports and started our reports on Arctic animals. In Maths we completed Multiplication and we have been working on designing Maths board games. In Topic we found out about the differences between the Arctic and the AntArctic creating maps of each. In Reading we completed’ Muckle’ reading task maps on Polar Explorers. In Science we found out about ‘Solids, Liquids and Gases’. We measured the temperature of water at room temperature, of ice and the temperature of boiling water. We read temperature scales and found differences in temperatures. In Art we sketched penguins, polar bears and igloos. Some of our class were invited to a Burns’ Supper at Linlithgow Primary, it was great fun. Others performed Scottish songs at St. John’s Church!

This week in Literacy we wrote a report on ‘Arctic Habitats’ ,in reading we used a ‘Fox Tool’ strategy where everyone got a number , then each number went to table where they had to find information, each number then had to bring their information back and share it with their group. Everyone had to work hard because if one piece of information was missing then we couldn’t answer all the questions at the end! In Maths we loved our new Maths musical starters where pop groups sang maths problems and we had to solve them. We completed our 3D posters on ‘Rights’ focusing on inspirational people who fought to abolish slavery. In Topic we continued with Frozen Planet theme and found out about the factors that affect climate zones around the world with a focus on the poles. In Art we sketched penguins. We chose the songs ‘My Maw’s a Millionaire’ and ‘Stay and Make my Heart Fly’ from ‘Sunshine On Leith’ to sing on Burns’ Day. Phew it’s been a busy week.

We had a busy time this week , inLiteracy we completed out letter to Mrs Moore, we also worked in groups to create our 3D posters on inspriational people. We chose Abrahm Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Oladauh Equiano and Rosa Parks. We are looking forwarding to presenting our posters to the rest of the class. In maths we investigated Multiples, Factors and Primes. We strated our new topic on Frozen planet, we watched ‘T o the Ends of the Earth’ and started on out topic challenges. In art we studied line and shade and proportion when we sketched polar bears.. some people found getting the proportions right really tricky! In Science we studied habitats.

Happy New Year, this week we have been finishing off our topic on 12 years a slave. We looked at the American Wars of Independence and how slavery was finally abolished, we started our posters on inspirational people like Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Rosa parks and Nelson Mandela, people who stood up for what they believed in and ensured that all people are treated equally. We completed out block on Time in Maths. We are now looking forward to our new topic!
We can’t wait to become explorers and scientists!
Week beginning the 7th December 2015
It almost Christmas!! This week we have continued to write our diary on the slave Harriet Tubman. We also completed our charcoal sketches of slave ships and our 3D slave huts; which we decorated with African patterns. In Maths we have been working on speed, distance and time. In Topic we investigated Active and Passive Slave resistance. In art we focused on pattern to create ‘pop art’ Christmas trees and we looked at proportion when we created our ‘Grinch’ portraits. In PE we have been practising our Scottish Country dancing for our Christmas party which is next Thursday.
We performed at the nativity in the church and at school and really enjoyed singing ‘Long, time ago in Bethlehem’ and we all managed to smile and remember our moves!!!

This week in P6/7 we continued to learn about Time – we worked on reading Timetables and on 12 and 24hr time.
We read about a slave called Hariet Tubman and how she helped slaves to escape on the Undergorund Railroad in America. We started to write the diary of Harriet Tubman.
We continued to practise our ‘Nativity’ songs both in school and at the church.
We had our Chirstmas lunches… the last one for P7 sadly!
We also wore Christmas jumpers and worked with money selling cakes at our Christmas Fayre.

This week in P6/7 we have finally decided on our Christmas song it is ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ we choose it because it has a great dance beat and we like the words!
We have also practised the Nativity with the whole school.
We have continued with our 12 years a Slave topic and found out what it was like to live as a Slave on the Plantations in America. We enjoyed building our 3D slave houses.
In maths we have investigated 12 and 24 hr time. We have also looked at how to measure time in different ways, and at how long journeys take in km/hr.
We have finished our slave story called ‘The Capture’ and our Poppy pictures blending with water colours. They look great!
The p7s went to an interschools Athletics festival at enjoyed javelin, long jump, bounce jumps and sprinting.
We enjoyed helping the gardening gang with their composting

This week in Primary 7 we have been discussing bullying we have started to create eantibullying posters and tulips for our ‘Respect Wall’.
In imaginative writing we have written a story called ‘ The Capture’ using power openers , Wow words and high level connectives. This story was based on the capture of a slave.
In Maths we found out about differernt types of triangles and the angles inside triangles.
In topic we continued with our Twelve Years a Slave Topic and found out about Slave Auctions we made Slave Chains and posters for Slave Auctions, we also used ICT to create graphs on the price of Human Life.
We found out about the story of Olaudah Equiano and enjoyed our topic challenges!
We continued with our Poppy pictures in the style of Georgia O’ Keefe concetrating on shading with watercolours.
In PE we did our final practise of Sportshall Athletics before the Athletic festival next Wednesday.
Next week we are going to start our Scottish Country dancing for our Christmas parties!!

This week we found out about the Middle passage; the terrible journey the slaves were taken on across the Atlantic – with no regard for their human rights
P7 went to St. Kentigerns to see ‘Sunshine on Leith’ which was a fantastic show. We found out how talented the children at St. Kentigerns are.
In ICT we found out how to take photos, download them and insert them into our documents.
We wrote ‘Poppy’ poems and continued with out ‘Poppy’ pictures for our wall display.
