Week beginning the 11th June 2018

We are all very tired because we put on our Rockstar performance on Tuseday night at school and then our Rockband performance on Wednesday night at the Howden park Centre. We were all very nervous but we really enjoyed singing the songs and playing the keyboard, guitar and drums for a live audience! Well done to Pip who won the Scottish Book Trust award and the Young Writer of the year awards with her poem ‘Ma Grandad’. Some of us went tot St. Kent’s for our transition and we loved it, we can’t wait to move up now! We finished all of our ‘Transition’ work and then we created our own ‘Pop Art’ pictures.

P3 Week Beginning 11th June

The big highlight this week was our performance on Tuesday. We looked great and we rocked! Other highlights include:

  • We have completed this year’s work on division and multiplication.
  • We met Ruan the Red Squirrel at the book festival.
  • There are auditions for St Joseph’s got talent today.
  • We started a topic all about The Beatles
  • We did a talk to the Primary 4 class about the different members in the Beatles.
  • We wrote book reviews about Ruan the Red Squirrel
  • Amelia, Izzy, Niamh and Beatrix sang ‘Journey to the Past’ for the class.

We Will We Will Rock You!!!

What a busy week we have all had.

Our week began with a trip to Cramond Beach, we were joined by P4. We were going to investigate how polluted the beach area is. Before our visit we had been learning about plastic nurdles and how the East coast of Scotland is particularly bad for nurdles.

When we got to the beach we split into three groups, one group went to visit a Roman fort and another group played beach games whilst the third group went in search of the nurdles. We rotated so that every group took part in each activity. The trip was great fun and we enjoyed each of the activities that we took part in. The weather was chilly but it did warm up through the day. We found over two thousand nurdles in just a small section of coastline which has caused us to want to learn more about the effects of these nurdles on wildlife both in and out of the sea.

When we returned to school we then sorted through what we had found to see what type of plastic we had found.

Tuesday we had the chance to share our Rookie Rockstar work that we had been doing as part of our topic. We came back to school in the evening to perform to parents and grandparents the songs that we had learnt. This was great fun and a chance to dress up in our Rockstar outfits. Congratulations to Emma M whose CD cover design won and will be on every CD sold.

Wednesday we went to the rugby club to meet Elizabeth Ezra who wrote Ruby McCraken.  We had the chance to understand how she gets ideas for her books as well as give her lots of ideas for a story. We also had the chance to ask questions about what inspired her to write stories.

To end our week we are having an ice cream party on Friday as we were not able to get one on Monday.

Week beginning 4th of June

This week Primary 2 have been practising songs with Rookie Rockstars in preparation for our concert on Tuesday night.  We have been using Think Boards to show our understanding of multiplication strategies.  We have been in the playground using hoops and bean bags to represent equal grouping.

Week beginning 28th of May

This week Primary 2 have been learning about the life of Grace Darling.  We wrote a report on the events of the rescue of survivors from the ship wrecked Forfarshire in 1838.  We used digital technology to design a lighthouse in response to the story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Rescue’.

Week beginning the 4th June 2018

Hi everyone, it has been  hectic  in P7.

This week in:

  • ICT we focused a lot of our time on creating our Transition Sway ‘All About Me’  presentations to share with all of the other pupils  in the cluster.
  • Music and Drama – We learnt a lot of songs and cool moves for our Rookie Rockstar performances
  • We took part in the Interschool’s Rugby Festival- and the girls team came in joint ‘First’ place..well done girls!

Rocking the Dance Floor!!!!

This week has been amazing; we have had such a fun filled week. Our learning this week has had a musical theme every day.

During the afternoons we have had special visitors called Glyn and Chloe from Rookie Rockstars. Over the week they have introduced us to five new songs which all had actions as well. We watched Mr Reed stuff loads of marshmallows into his mouth and then try to sing a song. We also watched Mr Brice and Mrs Telfer rapping out nursery rhymes which was very funny.

We ended our story this week having worked hard to create our own version of ‘The Water Horse’ by Dick King Smith. Through this story we have been learning to use new and exciting vocabulary which will make our story interesting to readers.

We have been learning about plastic ‘nurdles’ and the effect they are having on the beaches and wildlife around our coastlines. This is in preparation of our trip on Monday.

On Friday we spent the morning in our new class getting to know our new teacher and enjoying some fun activities.

Next week are all looking forward to our class visit to Cramond Beach where we will be carrying out our own investigation into plastic ‘nurdles’.

P3 Week Beginning 4th June

  • Learning about division by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10.
  • Creating information posters on our chosen Living Thing for our Profiles
  • Having our own class rap battles.
  • Designing CD covers
  • Preparing for St Joseph’s Got Talent.
  • Finding out that Amelia’s baby brother has arrived!

Gardening Gang 1st June 2018

P3s continued to plant their competition tyre. This week’s group planted out the lavender, pansy and viola seedlings the class had been growing from seed in pots in the classroom. Sadly the only verbena seedling to have sprouted had died (lack of water, lesson learned!) – if anyone happens to have some verbena spare, we would love some for the tyre. The tyre is filling up nicely with plants and looking good! The P3s also earthed up the competition potatoes – and discovered the magnifying garden glass!
Our plum trees are looking laden with young fruit but sadly one of them was suffering from pocket plum, a fungus which attacks and spoils the fruit – thankfully spotted by our eagle-eyed classroom assistants while just affecting one tree as it can spread. According to the RHS, the only remedy is to cut all the infected branches off which is why one of the plum trees is looking very scalped.
Finally, a big thank you to the inmates of HMP Edinburgh. We have received these tools (for adult helpers) through a scheme whereby prisoners refurbish old, broken and unwanted garden tools for use at schools and community groups. These tools are collected from garden centres, including from New Hopetoun Gardens – there is a collection bin just as you exit the garden centre. So if you have ever donated old tools in this way, they may have done full circle and are now helping the school! And if you get the chance, please do support this very worthwhile scheme.
