What a whirlwind week.

This week has been an unusually short week, we all enjoyed some fantastic weather whilst being off.

This week P5 have been busy learning about

  • Life during the 1970’s in particular toys, television shows, walkmans, music and films.
  • Powerful persuasive writing. We wrote a persuasive letter to the rangers at the Loch of the Lowes pleading with them not to close down the web site that we have been looking at daily.
  • May Procession, we began our week with a lovely assembly during which we brought flowers and art work to the front of the hall.
  • The whole school went to Mass on Thursday for the Ascension Mass.
  • We had a visit from the Deacons Court where we learnt more about the Linlithgow marches and took part in a quiz to check what we had heard.
  • All of us who applied to become a CHUM found out that we had been successful and will be starting this by the end of term.
  • We have new class pets which arrived on Thursday, we have a bowl of Tadpoles which we are busy naming.

We are looking forward to next week to see what fun and exciting learning we have on offer.

We had lunch and then our first activity which was ‘Mountain Biking’ for the Blue Group and the ‘Challenge Course’ for the Purple Group. We are having a fantastic time so far. Here are some pictures of our day!

Gardening Gang

First gardening gang update in a while!
With the sun finally shining, we’re getting back out into the garden! P3 have entered a Burgh Beautiful competition and will be planting in the large tyre opposite their classroom against the fence so it would be really appreciated if children (and grown-ups!) would not sit/walk/climb on the tyre or the soil, or else the new plants will get all squished. P3 will be creating a wellbeing and wildlife garden and the children had some great ideas what sort of flowers to plant – we’ll be getting started with some seeds soon. As you can see from the pics, it has a notice on it and a sort of willow guard to discourage trampling!
We’ve also scattered wildflower seeds over the muddy bank behind the two Norway maples (along from the back of the Rose club) – we had a large box given to us from Burgh Beautiful and we added some more. Bit of an experiment but we’ll see how it works!

Info for Camp 2018

Here is the powerpoint with information about camp. I have also included a list of the activities the children will take part in during our week at camp. Please can you ensure all medication to be administered is delivered to school by Friday the 20th April together with the permission  form signed and dated . I will send this form with the pupils on Monday the 16th April.

P7 Abernethy Dumfries

St Joseph’s 23-27th April 2018

Week beginning the 9th April 2018

Welcome back to P7. We hope you had a great Easter!

This week

  • We looked at food in Japan and made our own sushi.
  • In Literacy we used the Foxtool to take notes, then we worked in groups to create our own newscript about an earthquake and tsunami in Japan. We are going to make a movie of our newsreport next week.
  • In Maths we found out how to calculate percentages using a calculator. We also investigated scale drawings.
  • In art we created  a ‘front cover’ for the Radio Times Harry and Meghan Wedding competition. We also looked at Japanese symbols and used Sumi brush strokes to create our own symbols.

Week beginning 5th of March

Primary 2 have been learning all about Fairtrade this week.  We have been following the journey of the banana and designing Fairtrade Fortnight posters which were displayed at the Fairtrade community event on Friday night at Linlithgow primary.  We wrote a story map about ‘Whistleless’ the bird who lost its whistle.  We worked in pairs to talk about the story and retell the events in the correct order using talking tins to record the story.  We dressed up to celebrate ‘World Book Day’  on Friday.

Gardening Gang – February 2018

Gardening gang have been working with some of the outdoor learning committee on a design for a Keep Scotland Beautiful competition to create a One Planet Picnic Pocket Garden. This is a miniature garden the size of a pallet which includes edible food with wildlife gardening and recycling/sustainability themes. After some initial sketches from the children, Arlo from P3’s idea for a farm theme was chosen. Several P3s and P6s helped with more ideas for that theme and this Friday, Jamie from Torwood Garden Centre in Falkirk very kindly came into school to look at our designs and help us with ideas for the planting. Our design, beautifully put together by Mrs Pitman-Ross, is ready to be submitted next week – see picture – if successful, we’ll be asked to built it and display it at Gardening Scotland but even if we don’t get chosen, we hope to build it at school. We also had a bird feeder installed, bought with some of the money raised at the Welly Walk last year, so thanks to all who took part in that. We’re looking to make some recycled bird feeders to hang on it with the children over the next few weeks – thanks also to those who donated old plastic bottles.
