Learning and the Curriculum

Experiences for Learning within Pre Birth to Three Guidance and/or Curriculum for Excellence

Pre Birth to Three guidance offers children, parents and staff clear guidance in our settings from the earliest stages.

The document suggests we offer our youngest children and families high quality care and experiences which are built on the four KEY PRINCIPLES of:

THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD

Promoting positive RELATIONSHIPS to improve future outcomes and life chances

RESPONSIVE CARE which acknowledges that each child is a unique individual and the service we provide meets his/ her needs

Demonstrating RESPECT for all children and families

The KEY PRINCIPLES include nine features of practice e which support staff as they implement the KEY PRINCIPLES.

These are:

Role of Staff; Attachments; Transitions; Observations; Assessment and Planning; Partnership Working; Health and Wellbeing; Literacy and Numeracy; Environments; Play

Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) aims to achieve a transformation in education in Scotland by providing a coherent, more flexible and enriched curriculum from 3 to 18.

The 3-18 curriculum aims to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the attributes, knowledge and skills they will need to flourish in life, learning and work.

The knowledge, skills and attributes learners will develop will allow them to demonstrate four key capacities – to be successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

Children in nursery start their journey through CfE at the Early Level. During their time in nursery they will be provided with many opportunities for learning through play across all subject areas which are;

Health & Wellbeing – Language – Mathematics – Social Subjects – Sciences – Technology – Expressive Arts – RME

There will be particular focus on Aspects of Health and Wellbeing; Literacy and Numeracy – these are known as the core skills or Skills for Learning, Life and Work.

Learning experiences are on offer indoors and out throughout the year. Outdoor provision is a major feature and strength at Bathgate E.Y.C. As well as a purpose built indoor environment, our outdoor area lends itself to delivering opportunities for learning across all areas so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for all weathers!

Digital technology underpins all areas of the curriculum and is used in all areas of the playroom indoors and outdoors, to equip children with the skills and experiences required to progress in learning in today’s technological world.

Staff plan all learning experiences very carefully through collegiate professional discussion and also with children and parents. Children will be involved in planning and evaluating their own learning through Learning Stories, Talking and Thinking Floorbooks and their own Learner’s Journey documents.

You will find out more about CfE, Learing Stories, Learner’s Journey documents and Talking and Thinking Floor books at the information evening.
