  1. A windlass is a winch worked by a crank which would be used to lift up bricks and rubble to build the castle as they were heavy.

King Ludwig of Bavaria attempted to build the famous Neuchswantein Castle and this was built for war not for show. It took 17 years to build and lots of money it was completed 6 years after the kings death.

  2. Max has been finding out about building castles and the quiz questions:
The windlass is an apparatus for moving heavy weights. Typically, a windlass consists of a horizontal cylinder (barrel), which is rotated by the turn of a crank. In medieval times it could take up to a year to build a simple castle or 10-12 years to build a larger more extravagant rock castle.
Large castles to house several hundred people to several thousand depending on size. The poeple who lived in the castle were Kings/Queens princes/princess, lords, ladies servants/workers and many more.

  3. Max has been looking at what a windlass was used for, it is a device used to move or lift heavy things. In medieval times simple castles could be built in a year but more extravagant stone castles could take as long as ten to twelve years to build. Castles could be home to several hundred to several thousands of people depending on their size. Kings/Queens, Princes/Princess, Lords servants, workers and many more would live in the castles, however many castles were left in disrepair, crumbling and empty.
Hopefully this blog will appear today Max thinks his blog has not been posted last night!! Homework in the morning and evening for Mum and Max

  4. Well done to James, Declan, Rhea, Regan, Olivia, Charlie, Shaun, Owen, Max, Jack, Rebecca and Ellen for finding out how long it took to make a castle. Answers ranged from half a year for a simple castle up to 30 years for a big castle. The children found out answers from their parents, from looking in books and from looking online. Some children also remembered that I had already told them the answer when I read out some information from our class castle book before the February break.

Well done to James, Rhea, Owen and Max for finding out what a windlass was and what it was used for. Again, the children found out by looking in books and online. They told me a windlass helped to build castles by lifting heavy weights, like rocks. James told us a windlass is like an old-fashioned crane.

All of these children will get a prize from Mrs BP on Friday – well done!

  5. Well done Max on getting pupil of the week. Mum and Dad are very proud of you and know that you have been working very hard. Max went to the cinema to see Jack & Jill as a treat and a big box of popcorn and a pick’n’mix!
