Primary 1 Maths

Good afternoon boys and girls,

It has been so nice to see your creations and work that you have been sending into the new email address! It is nice to be able to reply to you I hope it is putting a smile on your face. I know Mrs Melia and I are definitely smiling when we see all your hard work.

Today for maths can you practise saying the next number forwards and backwards. An adult at home will count to you for example 11, 12, 13 and you will need to say what comes next. Then try to do it backwards too for example 16, 15, 14 and you will say what comes before.

You might want to join in with this song to do some counting before you try your task.

You also have the game on education city where you can practise halving items.

Have a lovely day. It is another lovely day I hope you manage to get outside for some fresh air, maybe a walk or a cycle.

Primary 3 Activities

Good afternoon

Wishing Tree

One of your classmates came up with the idea of creating a wishing tree.   He drew a tree and then made leaves to add to the tree.  On the leaves he wrote things that he would like to do after lockdown.  Why don’t you try creating your own wishing tree.

My wishes would be –

Hug family and friends.

Take my children to the park.

Have a party with family and friends.

Numeracy

I would like you to choose one of the Number Talks challenges below.

Science

Today’s challenge is to make a boat. Get some tin foil make it into a boat shape with a flat square bottom and edges so the water does not spill in. The water should push it up because water is a really strong force that can hold up heavy weights like real ships. Then start adding spoons to your tin foil boat to see how many spoons it can hold before it sinks.  Before you start can you guess how many spoons it will hold before the boat sinks?
As an extension you could weigh the spoons to see how many and how heavy the load is before it sinks.
As a further extension or If you don’t have any tin foil at home you can make your own waterproof paper. Yes that’s right waterproof paper. Get a piece of paper and colour it in with a crayon or a candle. These things make the paper water proof because it creates a barrier between the water and the paper.
Hope you are all well.

P1 Literacy

Good Morning everyone,

Hope you are all well.

For PE this morning we would like you to do a bit of yoga.

Yesterday Miss Beaton and Mrs Melia set you a lego challenge. For your Literacy today we would like you to think about your instructions for your lego creation.

You should include a list of what you need, this can be in pictures or a list or both. Then write 3 more sentences explaining how to build your park.

If your not sure pop on the TV and watch BBC Bitesize at 10am on BBC Scotland (also on iplayer). Today’s program is about instruction writing.

Remember you can email your lego challenge and instructions to us at wlpolkemmet-ps-primary1@westlothian.org.uk

We have seen some already they are fantastic! We look forward to seeing more.

Also on BBC Scotland at 10:20 you can watch One Night at the Museum. Where children are exploring the National Musuem of Scotland at nighttime! I wonder what they will find. What would you do if you were in the musuem?

For Science today, we are going to explore the properties of water. There are words we can use that describe how water changes: freeze, melting and boiling.

Freezing: put some water into an ice cube tray. Predict where will it freeze best? Once it has frozen, what around the house can you use to melt the ice? Can you find 3 things? Remember to ask a grown up for some help. Take a photo of what you use and write how long it took. Which was the fastest to make the ice melt? Which took the longest to melt the ice?

You can send us your pictures and answers to our Primary 1 email address.

Pop back later for some maths 🙂

Primary 2

Hi boys and girls. Hope you are all staying safe at home. Here are a few activities for this morning!

LITERACY

Remind yourself of the capital letters and their names by singing the alphabet song. Watch this video on how to form the capital letters A-Z.

Practice writing the capital letters in different ways – in your jotter/on the ground with chalk/using paint with your finger etc. Make sure you start and finish in the correct place.

Our names begin with a capital letter. Try to think of a boys and a girls name for each letter of the alphabet – your family can join in and help too. Write your list of names in your jotter from A-Z. Good Luck!

Remember to continue to practice your tricky words from your word walls with an adult, as much as possible.

Remember to send any photos of your work or send any comments to

It would be great to hear from you. Mrs Reid!

Primary 1 Maths

Good afternoon boys and girls,

I hope you have been working hard trying to say all your tricky words this morning!

I hope your as excited as Mrs Melia and I about the lego challenge! We can not wait to see your creation, read your instructions and be able to email back to give you our thoughts on your creation!

For maths today can you practise halving items.

Here is a little story to remind you, we listened to this one in class.

Can you make a sandwich and cut it in half? Can you cut a cake in half? You could have one half and you could give the other half to someone else. Can you get 4 pieces of lego and half them? Can you get 10 pieces of pasta and half them? How many pieces would you get?

I have also set a challenge on education city for you to try!

Have a good day

It is a lovely day today so make sure you go out and get some fresh air if you can
