P1 Thursday Literacy and Science

Good morning everyone,

Hope you are all safe and well.

This morning for Literacy we would like you to do the next page in your sentence book. In Education City there are two games for you to play one on the ‘th’ sound and another called the Pet Shop to help you to build sentences. Have a go.

For Science, this weeks challenge is to make a boat. Please do this lesson, as next week there will be a more complicated boat to make that should be lots of fun. So make sure we do this one to get out boat building skills up.

So first of all – Get some tin foil make it into a boat shape with a flat square bottom and edges so the water does not spill in. The water should push it up because water is a really strong force that can hold up heavy weights like real ships. If you are struggling get an adult to help. It should only take them a couple of minutes.
Once you have got your boat, start adding spoons to your tin foil boat to see how many spoons it can hold before it sinks. Before you start, can you guess how many spoons it will hold before the boat sinks?

As an extension you could make another tin foil boat and try to improve your design or if you don’t have any tin foil at home you can make your own waterproof paper at home. Yes that’s right waterproof paper! Get a piece of paper and colour it in with a crayon or a candle – make sure you cover all of the paper. The candle/crayon makes the paper water proof because it creates a barrier between the water and the paper stopping the water getting into the paper and making it soggy.

Can you take a photo and email it to us at,
Pop back this afternoon for some more fun activities 🙂

Primary 1 Maths and Topic

Good afternoon boys and girls.

It has been lovely seeing the videos that some of you have sent in already about what you have enjoyed about Primary 1. Remember once you have made your video send it into our email

wlpolkemmet-ps-primary1@westlothian.org.uk

For maths remember to keep practising counting forwards and backwards. Here is a few songs you can join in with to help you count.

Once you have practised counting we would like you to do some ordering of numbers. You might start with numbers 0-10 or if your feeling confident you might try 0-20 or even beyond. Write the numbers down on square pieces of paper. Mix all the numbers up and then see if you can arrange them in the correct order. Once you have done it once why not see if you can do it faster. Here is an example

For our healthy eating topic today we would like you to speak to someone in your house and find out which foods taste sweet, salty or sour. Can you make an experiment and try some of these things? Which did you like best? Does everyone in your house like the same kinds of foods? What do you like that is the same or different?

Can you also talk to someone in your home about what is different about tinned food and fresh food. Are they both as healthy for you?

Email us your thoughts about sweet, sour and salty foods, which do you prefer?

Have a lovely afternoon

Art / Outdoors Activity

When on your daily walk with your family, take a bag and collect some sticks.  Once you are home, try creating a stick version of your family as something to remember this time by.  Use glue or sellotape to attach the sticks to a piece of paper.  You could then add in some extra details.

Here is an example:

Remember to email any questions or photos of your work to:

Primary 1 Maths

Good afternoon boys and girls,

Have you had a busy morning?

For maths today you are going to give someone in your house directions? It could be from your bedroom to the living room or maybe the living room to the kitchen. Remember to use directional language left right, forward and backwards. To get to my kitchen I need to take 8 steps forward, turn left and then 5 steps forward

Why not try this on education city. You just need to write down the directions you would give Sten to get to Manu’s house.

https://go.educationcity.com/content/index/13777/3/2/13

If you have a tablet you could download the bee-bot app. Here is what you need to look for.

Today we would also like you to take a little video telling us what your favourite part of Primary 1 so far has been. If you don’t want to do a video maybe you could draw a picture and write a sentence. Once you have done this could you send it into the Primary 1 email box where Mrs Melia and I can see them all. Here is the email address

Have a lovely afternoon

P1 Tuesday Literacy, PE and Music

Good morning everyone,

Hope you are all well.

Today for PE join Oti dancing to the Lion King.

For Music, listen to these songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JldSBUQB34

Listening.

Go on a listening walk around your house. What can you hear?

A clock ticking? , the washing machine? any animal sounds?

For Literacy today the sound we are visiting again is ‘th’. Remember this is the cheeky sound – the one you are allowed to stick your tongue out at 😛

‘Th’ can be at the beginning of a word like the, thin, thick, or at the end of a word like bath and cloth. And sometimes it is in the middle of a word like clothes. What this films to remind yourself,

In your jotter, draw 4 pictures that either begin with or end with th. Remember, add lots of detail. Can you try to write the word next to your drawing? Then try to write 2 sentences with ‘th’ word for example,

The moth has wings.

Remember you can take a picture and send it to our email address,

wlpolkemmet-ps-Primary1@westlothian.org.uk

We look forward to seeing them. There is also a sumdog spelling challenge open for the rest of this week. Can you spell the 10 words with th?

Pop back later for some maths activities 🙂
