Sunflower Competition

Rural connect in association with Dobbies Garden Centre have challenged West Lothian Schools to grow the largest sunflower

The story so far…

A group of pupils from Broxburn Academy planted over 200 Russian Giant sunflower seeds in the glass houses at SRUC Oatridge in January. Over the following months they had the responsibility to care for them and ensure they were in great condition to be handed out to competing schools in April.

We are taking up the challenge and now have the responsibility to look after and grow our sunflower. We have made a display in the nursery entrance area to monitor the growth of our sunflower and at the moment it is measuring 99cm. There will be a prize for the tallest sunflower so wish us luck!

The children will be learning what a sunflower requires to grow successfully and learn how to care for it themselves.

Learner’s Journey

The children have recently been enjoying looking at their Learner’s Journey. These are where we record information and put photographs of the children’s experiences and learning during their time in nursery. We also encourage the children and parents to contribute to this by bringing in achievements and learning from outside of nursery.

Lifecycles

We are learning about lifecycles. We have been making frogs with the play dough and have been making caterpillars. We have made frog puppets where we were learning how to use scissors. The children have also been listening to and enjoying the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We are very excited as our caterpillars have arrived and we are going to closely monitor them as they grow and turn into butterflies.

Spring and Easter

We have been learning about Spring and Easter. We painted lovely spring flowers and made them into a display. We have made pictures with our fingerprints which are on display in the nursery entrance. We have been learning about the Easter story at small group time and have made Easter cards and decorated easter pictures. As a treat we had Hot Cross Buns for snack. The children have enjoyed reading Easter stories and had fun with the interactive Easter display. Below is a link to the Easter Story we watched in nursery.

Just a wee reminder that all children return to nursery on Monday 15th April

Happy Easter from all the staff  at Knightsridge EYC

Fairytales

We are learning about Fairytales. We have been reading and listening to Goldilocks and The Three Bears. Some of the children have enjoyed dressing up as the three bears and acting out the story. We are learning about size, talking about the bowls, the chairs and the beds. The children have been making bear puppets and are using shapes to make Goldilocks. We are also learning how to match using pictures from the story. The children have also been learning how to make their own sandwiches for snack.

Chinese New Year

We have been learning about Chinese New Year. We have made Chinese Dragons from paper plates and crepe paper. We copied Chinese writing using red paper and black paint. We decorated red paper with gold items and then learned how to fold them into fans. These were then made into a lovely Chinese New Year display. On Thursday for snack we tasted Chinese noodles and prawn crackers for snack. The children have also had fun setting up a Chinese Restaurant and engaging in role play.
