As part of West Lothian Money Week we have been learning about money through a variety of activities. We have played with coins in the play dough and we made our own piggy banks with boxes and various art materials. We also explored coins through cutting and sticking activities at small group time and we completed coin jigsaws. The part of the week we enjoyed the most was when we went shopping to Mrs Currie’s fruit shop and bought our own piece of fruit.

Number, Shape and Colour
Recently in nursery the children have been exploring and learning about numbers, colours and shapes. We have been cutting squares, triangles, circles and rectangles in the playdough and talking about the different colours of the shapes. We have been playing with shape and coloured jigsaws. Some of the children went on a shape walk where they looked for different 3D shapes around our centre which they then turned into a lovely disolay. We have been making pictures using different shapes and painting nunbers. We have also made a lovely number display and a very popular coloured Elmer display. We are encouragong counting through simple number songs and rhymes.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar story telling walk
This week in the nursery we helped to celebrate West Lothian Walking Week. We invited our parents, carers and families to join us in the nursery to listen to The Very Hungry Caterpillar story and to participate in some craft activities. We then made a human caterpillar and went on a wriggly wiggly walk around the nursery. After all the activities and walking we all had a healthy snack and tasted some of the healthy foods that helped the caterpillar turn into a beautiful butterfly. We were learning about healthy foods and that walking and being active is a healthy way to be.

Healthy Eating
The children have been learning about healthy eating and keeping fit. They have been tasting different fruits and vegetables at snack. Many children have painted still life pictures of a healthy fruit bowl. We have been talking about which foods are healthy and which ones are not. The children have also been learning that physical activities outside and inside are a good way to keep fit. They have had fun playing with the equipment and learning how to move their bodies in different ways.
Caterpillars
We are absolutely delighted that our tiny little caterpillers have now turned into Painted Lady Butterflies. The children have really enjoyed and learned alot from this experience. We couldn’t keep them long so on Thursday 30th May we let them free and they flew away into the community.
Sunflower Competition
Rural connect in association with Dobbies Garden Centre have challenged West Lothian Schools to grow the largest sunflower
The story so far…
A group of pupils from Broxburn Academy planted over 200 Russian Giant sunflower seeds in the glass houses at SRUC Oatridge in January. Over the following months they had the responsibility to care for them and ensure they were in great condition to be handed out to competing schools in April.
We are taking up the challenge and now have the responsibility to look after and grow our sunflower. We have made a display in the nursery entrance area to monitor the growth of our sunflower and at the moment it is measuring 99cm. There will be a prize for the tallest sunflower so wish us luck!
The children will be learning what a sunflower requires to grow successfully and learn how to care for it themselves.
Planting
The children have been learning all about plants. We are learning the names of the plant parts and that they need water and sunshine to grow. The children have enjoyed planting beans and sunflowers. They have also grown cress and made a funny head from tights, compost and cress seeds and it grew hair!

Learner’s Journey
The children have recently been enjoying looking at their Learner’s Journey. These are where we record information and put photographs of the children’s experiences and learning during their time in nursery. We also encourage the children and parents to contribute to this by bringing in achievements and learning from outside of nursery.
