Dear parents,

You probably already know that the  Guide Dogs do a lot more than just provide guide dogs for people who are severely sight impaired! They do a lot of work helping children with all levels of VI learn how to get around safely and develop life skills.

I’ve just been sent this information which might be useful for you.

Guide Dogs have developed some free online resources containing information, guidance and activities to help support children’s early years habilitation development through play. Which can be found at:-

Guide Dogs are also developing habilitation group sessions, My Time to Play, for children aged 0-4. Due to COVID restrictions these will be virtually in the first instance. More information can be found at

Watch out for dangerous toys this Christmas

Lots of us will be doing our shopping online this Christmas thanks to Covid-19 restrictions and shop closures.

Buying presents online – especially children’s toys – can also be a great way to discover some bargains and save money.

However, the number of dangerous toys sold online to unsuspecting families is on the increase – so it’s good to be aware when buying presents this year.

For example, did you know that if you buy a toy from a third party seller via one of the well-known online marketplaces, it might not meet UK safety standards?

Online marketplaces are simply offering a shop window to sellers around the world and aren’t legally required to check if a toy is safe before allowing it to be sold.

Some of these toys may be dangerous and, as a result, could cause serious injuries to children.

Dangers can include:

• Magnets so strong they can burn through the gut if swallowed
• Long cords which can strangle a child
• Dangerous levels of chemicals
• Small parts that can choke or suffocate
• Easy access to button batteries that can get stuck in a child’s food pipe, cause internal bleeding and even death.

The Child Accident Prevention Trust is sharing tips to help everyone buy toys safely this Christmas.

If you are able to, they suggest parents buy direct via the websites of well-known brand names.

Or if you’re buying from an online marketplace, enter a reputable brand name when you search for the toy you want to be sure it’s safe.

Remember, toys aren’t checked for safety before they’re sold by an online marketplace.

If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is – it costs manufacturers money to make toys safe. Try to find something you can be more sure about.

Shop safely and have a very happy Christmas!

This week in I.E.Y.C we have been watching the birds in our garden.  We have been feeding them to attract them, then the children have been making charts to see what type of birds visit our garden.  We have seen magpies, blackbirds, sparrows, seagulls and a Robin.  We watched a a you tube video and learned lots of names of other birds.  We love the peacock and some children have been drawing and making their own peacocks.

Following on from potion and spell making over the Halloween period the children have taken part in a few scientific experiments.  Making volcanoes and lava lamps were the most popular.

We have spent some time discussing how tall we are and putting different objects in height order.  We drew round the children and have a height chart in the Nursery.  The children have been using lots of different mathematical language during these activities.

We have been working hard on pattern this week and a lot of the children have grasped the concept of continuing patterns and making their own patterns.   This would be something you could try at home to support you children’s learning.

Week beginning November 23rd

Rhyme of the Week

We are going to focus on each rhyme for two weeks from now on to allow children to become fully confident in their knowledge of the rhyme. This is responding to feedback from the nursery practitioners who think a second week of  will be beneficial in consolidating the children’s fluency with each rhyme.

This week in Inveralmond the children have been building their own assault course in the garden.   Working together, risk assessing and challenging themselves physically.

Lots of children enjoyed listening to the story The Billy Goats Gruff and have been acting it out themselves with puppets

We have also been taking part in yoga and ballet

Or maybe you were outside wrapped up in your warm coat, hat and gloves.
