Homework & Websites

Regular and frequent homework is key to successful language learning.

From S1, pupils are expected to be in the habit of memorising vocabulary, verbs and grammar structures at home. This may form part of a homework task given by the teacher but students are also expected to do this over and above set homework. Effective memorising methods include writing the vocabulary out several times, using the words/phrases in sentences and chanting  aloud. Students can also listen to the vocabulary repeatedly and can also use the following websites practise vocabulary and grammar:

  • Linguascope (students have username & password)
  • Languages Online
  • Zut! (free 4pm-9am & weekends-students have username & password outwith these times)
  • Gut! (free 4pm-9am & weekends)
  • Oye! (free 4pm-9am & weekends-students have username & password outwith these times)
  • Languages Online (Australia)
  • Edmodo (a wide variety of listening materials – pupils will require a free Edmodo account and should ask their teacher for the Group Code)
  • Scholar (for senior phase – students have username & password)
  • SQA Past Papers (for Reading/Listening/Writing Practice at all levels):                        French                            German                        Spanish

Students will be given set homework tasks on a frequent basis, such as reading, writinglistening and grammar activities or occasionally research. They will also be asked to practise and prepare for talking tasks and assessments.

Students will be provided with core vocabulary booklets and will have a reference jotter where they note extra vocabulary and grammar explanations.

As pupils progress from S1 to S6 the homework will become increasingly longer and more complex.

To do homework well, it is important that pupils have access to a good French , Spanish or German  dictionary. These can be purchased from the school.
