Week Beginning Monday 19th December 2022

Welcome to the Head Teacher’s blog for Week Beginning 19th December 2022

A Big Thank You!

I would like to express my gratitude to everyone for their patience and understanding and co-operation over these past few days while we have had to implement our Adverse Weather plans due to the difficult weather conditions.

Christmas Pantomime

Our fabulous PTA have generously provided a pantomime performance for all of the children in the Nursery and P1-7.  This year’s performance is ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ by Hopscotch Theatre Productions.

This takes place in the school hall on Friday 23rd December 2023.  What a wonderful way for our children to enjoy the last day of term!

To accommodate the performance, we will have an earlier lunchtime for P1-7 from 12.10pm-12.55pm.

Thank you once again to PTA for this lovely Christmas treat!

Christmas Holiday

School and Nursery close at 2.30pm on Friday 23rd December 2022 for the Christmas holidays.

We re-open on Monday 9th January 2023 at the usual times.  (Breakfast Club will be open from 8.15am as normal on 9th)

Non-Uniform Day

Our next non-uniform day is Friday 23rd December 2023.  The theme is ‘Christmas Jumper/Festive Sparkle’.

Planned Industrial Action Letter

Staffing Update

Miss Jazmin Steven, one of our wonderful School Support Assistants will leave us on Friday 23rd December 2023 to begin an exciting new career as a Fire Fighter.

In the time Miss Steven has worked at Woodhead, she has had a huge impact on the children and classes she supports.  She will be missed by staff and pupils alike.

Miss Steven also helps run our Breakfast Club.  From January 2023, Mrs. Dunsmore will take over this role.

We wish Miss Steven all the best for the future and her new job!

Support during the winter break

Winter and Christmas can be an expensive time of year. We know this will be hard financially for some of our families. Please find below some of the options available for support:

Scottish Child Payment

Scottish Child Payment Applications are open for children aged under 16.

People can apply for the payment of £100 every 4 weeks if they:

  • get Universal Credit, Tax Credits or other qualifying benefits.
  • have a child or children aged under 16.

Apply at https://www.mygov.scot/scottish-child-payment. This should take around 10-20 minutes.

There is no limit to the number of children you can apply for and receiving Scottish Child Payment will not affect your tax or other benefits.

If you cannot apply online, you can apply by calling Social Security Scotland free on 0800 182 2222.

With the cost of living rising, SLC have established Warm Welcome’ locations across South Lanarkshire. Venues including libraries, leisure facilities and community spaces can be accessed throughout the winter months, where a range of support, facilities and activities can be found.

A house point to every pupil who shares the correct answer with Mr. Clark.

Can your child solve it without parental help or googling it?

My last day as Head Teacher of Woodhead Primary School and Nursery Class is Friday 23rd December 2023.

As this will be my final HT Blog, I would like to that all parents/carers, staff and pupils past and present for everything that they have done over the past 5 years.

There have been very many times when I have been blown away by the kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity of the Woodhead community.

I have been tremendously proud to be the Head Teacher of our fabulous school and go with very fond memories.

Thank you to everyone for their kind words of support over these past few weeks in particular.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, a happy and prosperous New Year, and all the very best for the future.

Kind regards

It’s raining at midnight, but the forecast for tomorrow and the next day is clear. Will there be sunny weather in 48 hours?

A house point to every pupil who shares the correct answer with Mr. Clark.

Can your child solve it without parental help or googling it?

Thank you for your continued support. Please get in touch via the school office if I can assist in any way.

Kind regards

Mr. Clark

Head Teacher

Week Beginning Monday 7th November 2022

Welcome to the Head Teacher’s blog for Week Beginning 7th November 2022.

The weather has been quite wet this week which means the child have had to be indoors for playtime and lunchtimes.  Our Primary 7 monitors have done a great job in helping to look after the younger children while they have had their break indoors.

We also recommend that children come to school with spare socks/tights etc at this time of year, especially as the rain very often comes on just as the children are arriving and leaving school.

It’s also coming to the time of year where we sometimes need to implement our Adverse Weather Plans:

Adverse Weather Plan

If our playground is inaccessible at the beginning of the school day, children will be directed to enter via the Main Entrance or Nursery Glass Doors.  The Torhead Gate will not be opened.  We will do our best to communicate this as early as possible via Text Message, Email/Learning Journals and Twitter.

In the instance of deep snow, SLC Head Teachers have the authority to delay opening until 10am.  Again, this will be communicated as quickly as possible, however, some of our communication systems are only accessible from school so this is reliant on staff being able to travel safely.

Let’s hope the Winter is a mild one so we don’t need to implement these plans too often!

M&M Performance of ‘Beauty and the Beast’

We had a fantastic performance of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ delivered by M&M Theatre Productions on Monday 31st October 2022.  The show as amazing, with great acting, wonderful singing and lots and lots of opportunities for audience participation.  Some of our teachers were even picked to take part in a ‘dance-off’!

We enjoyed the show so much, we are hoping to book them for our Christmas Pantomime this year.  More information to follow as soon as this is confirmed.

Parent Teacher Consultations

Don’t forget that Parent Teacher Consultations (Parents’ Night) takes place on Thursday 10th November 2022.

89% of our parent/carers have already booked an appointment.  If you have not booked your appointment yet, please do so by 3.30pm on Monday 7th November 2022.

If you are unable to attend, you should still log in and mark yourself as unavailable.

Christmas Card Enterprise

Orders for Christmas Cards must be received in school by Wednesday 9th November 2022.

Late returns may not be processed by the company in time for delivery before Christmas.

Please do not send cash to school for these – payment is by Parent Pay only.

Book Fayre Arrangements

The Scholastic Book Fayre will be in school all of this week.  All classes will have an opportunity to browse the selection by Wednesday. During the browse session, children will fill in a ‘Wish List’ of books they might like.

This is not an order form or a reservation system, nor is there any pressure for parents/carers to buy any books from the Wishlist.  It is simply a way of children to let their parent/carer know some books they might be interested in.

The only time to purchase books is during Parent/Teacher Consultations on Thursday 10th November 2022.  It will be located in Room 3 and open throughout the evening.

There are three methods of payment that we can accept on Thursday:

  • Cash
  • Book Fair Gift Vouchers: https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/gift-vouchers.
  • Online Payment: Whilst at the Book Fayre, parents/carers can log in to a website using a smart phone, make payment via Credit or Debit Card and then show receipt of this to the staff.

Please note that payment for Book Fayre cannot be made via ParentPay.  We also cannot take payment by card directly.

If a book is out of stock on the evening, it can be ordered and will be sent home as soon as it arrives in school (usually within 5-7 days).

Depending on the number of books sold, the school received approximately 60% commission to spend on new books for the school.

Our pupil House Captains have suggested the following themes for our Non-Uniform Days this year:

We consulted the Parent Council about these themes too, ensuring they took account of the Cost of the School Day.

Week Beginning Monday 31st October 2022

It’s been a spooky week at Woodhead with our PTA Hallowe’en Disco and Hallowe’en Themed non-uniform day.  A huge thank you to all of our parents/carers, children and staff for making so much effort to make these events lots of fun.

For those children who are heading out on Monday night for ‘trick or treat’, I hope you have a lovely, safe time.

A reminder however, that if children are given any products which contains nuts, these must not be brought into school as we have both children and staff with severe, life-threatening nut allergies.

PTA Hallowe’en Disco

Thank you very much to our wonderful PTA and all of their volunteers for organising a massively successful Hallowe’en disco on Thursday.

The children had a wonderful time and looked amazing in their costumes.  It was lovely that this event was able to take place again – the first time since October 2019.

I’d also like to thank the staff members who gave of their own time to come along.

The PTA are delighted to have raised the wonderful total of £886.26.

Thanks again to our PTA, all of the parent/carer volunteers, all of the staff who supported and our fantastic DJ who ensured the children were dancing the night away.

Parent Teacher Consultations

Anti-bullying Workshops

We are pleased to take up an offer of Anti-bullying workshops from our Community Police colleagues.  These are aimed at children in P6 and P7.

PC McCrone will visit on Friday 4th November and deliver her workshop to each class individually.

I am sure this will be a useful and informative session for our pupils.

Online Safety – Social Media

Recently, we have supported many children and families who have required assistance when the use of social media has resulted in children being upset or worried.

Almost all Social Media apps are for people age 13 or over.  In order to sign up, a date of birth must be entered.  Adding an incorrect date means that younger children may be exposed to adverts and content that are not age appropriate.  It also invalidates the terms and conditions for many of these social networks.

That means that none of our children are able to use these apps.

We have been asked by parents for advice and help with children’s use of Social Media.  The following links direct you to many sources of information:

Parent Club – Online Safety

NSPCC Guide to Social Media for Parents:

Use parental controls on your child’s iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

School Value Award Recipients

Our assembly was postponed until next week.  We will celebrate two weeks of School Values recipients at the next assembly.

Book Fayre

In consultation with the Parent Council, we have decided to take part in the Scholastic Book Fayre in school to coincide with our Parents’ Evening this term.

The Fayre will arrive in school on 7th November 2022.  All children will have an opportunity to browse the books and complete a wish list to bring home.  Books will then be available to purchase* during the Parents’ Evening.

Please note that there is no obligation to purchase any books from a child’s wish list.

*It may be required to order books for later delivery depending on stock levels.

Non-Uniform Day

Our next non-uniform day will take place on Friday 28th October 2022.  The School House Captains have decided on the optional theme of ‘Hallowe’en’

Children can come to school wearing a Hallowe’en costume or Hallowe’en themed outfit. Please avoid overly scary outfits that younger children might not like. Please also leave all accessories such as wands, swords, etc. at home.

We have a small supply of donated costumes that we would be delighted to pass on to any families.  Pop in to the office if you would like to have a look.

Riddle of the Week

Well done to everyone who told me the correct answer to last week’s Riddle:

What two things can you never eat for breakfast?  The correct answer was ‘Breakfast and Lunch’

This week’s riddle is:

I have cities, but no houses. I have forests, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?

A house point to every pupil who shares the correct answer with Mr. Clark.

Can your child solve it without parental help or googling it?

Thank you for your continued support. Please get in touch via the school office if I can assist in any way.

Kind regards

Mr. Clark
